Insure a Patek Philippe separately from a standard homeowners policy, create a dated evidence file, and have a qualified specialist state the value basis in writing. A typical homeowners policy may cap watches and jewelry at $5,000 or less, according to Chubb’s current US guidance, while a specialist valuable-articles policy can list the watch individually and use an agreed value. Keep the Certificate of Origin, invoice, photographs, service history and current appraisal together. Do not treat a Patek Philippe Archive Extract as a valuation: Patek Philippe says it cannot provide current resale values and directs owners to an auction house or specialized dealer. Review the policy wording, security requirements and valuation at least annually, and sooner after a major market move, service or change in completeness.

How do I insure a Patek Philippe watch?

Start by asking your existing insurer whether the watch is covered at all, the sub-limit for watches, and whether loss, accidental damage and disappearance are included. Then obtain quotations for a specialist valuable-articles policy or a scheduled item endorsement. Have the Patek listed by maker, reference, serial numbers, configuration and an agreed or clearly defined replacement value rather than relying on a household contents limit.

Chubb’s current US guidance says a typical homeowners policy usually limits jewelry and watches to $5,000 or less. That is a policy illustration, not a universal rule: limits, exclusions and territories vary by insurer and country. A Patek Philippe whose value exceeds the sub-limit should normally be scheduled individually or insured under specialist wording.

Why scheduling matters

A listed watch has its maker, model, reference and agreed value recorded on the policy. If it is lost, the insurer has a pre-loss description and value to apply to the claim. An unlisted watch may still be covered, but the owner generally has to prove ownership, identity, condition and value after the event. MWB identifies receipts or invoices, a certificate, warranty card or Archive Extract, reference and serial number, current proof of value, a police report and a repair quotation as possible claim documents.

Ask about the risks that are often excluded

  • Accidental damage, including damage while worn or during travel.
  • Theft, loss and “mysterious disappearance,” which may be treated differently.
  • Worldwide or travel cover, and any requirement to notify the insurer before a long trip.
  • Residence restrictions, safes, alarms and storage conditions.
  • The deductible and whether settlement is repair, replacement, market value or cash.
  • Inflation, index-linking and any extended-replacement provision.
  • The interval and credentials required for a new appraisal.

Chubb says its US valuable-articles coverage has no deductible and may pay market value up to 150% of the insured value, subject to collection limits. Its US luxury-watch FAQ also describes a typical premium of 1% to 2% of appraised value. Those are Chubb US statements, not promises about another insurer or jurisdiction; obtain the actual schedule and policy wording before relying on them.

What should I record before asking for insurance?

Build the inventory from the watch itself and from its accompanying materials. Record the reference or model, movement number, case number, metal, dial, hands, bezel, bracelet or strap, clasp, buckle, complications and any visible hallmarks or signatures. Note whether parts are original, replaced or later additions. Do not remove the case back to find an internal number. Patek Philippe says that work should be done only by an Authorized Retailer or Authorized Service Center.

Photograph the watch and its accessories

  • Take sharp, well-lit images of the dial, case sides, case back, crown, clasp, buckle, hallmarks and any visible reference or serial markings.
  • Photograph the box, Certificate of Origin, warranty material, spare links, original buckle and other accessories.
  • Capture scratches, dents, polishing, dial condition and bracelet stretch so the pre-loss condition is clear.
  • When an insurer asks for dated images, include a current newspaper or another date indicator in the frame.

Chubb specifically asks for dated photographs and, for watches valued above $100,000, a purchase invoice or recent appraisal. Other insurers can use a different threshold or accept different evidence, so ask for their requirement in writing.

Which documents prove ownership, authenticity and completeness?

No single paper proves every part of a claim. Keep an evidence file that links the person who owns the watch, the exact watch, its condition and the amount insured.

Document or record What it establishes Important qualification
Certificate of Origin Original delivery document identifying movement and case numbers, and associated reference information Patek Philippe says it must be dated and signed by an Authorized Retailer to validate authenticity and warranty privileges; the original cannot be re-issued
Purchase invoice or receipt Transaction, date, seller and price paid Purchase price is not automatically today’s replacement or agreed value
Gift, estate or transfer paperwork How ownership changed hands when there was no conventional purchase Keep supporting identity and probate or gift records where applicable
Current photographs Identity, completeness and condition before a loss Use a date indicator when the insurer requests dated images
Service invoices and warranty records Maintenance history, parts replaced and dates handled by a service provider A service invoice does not itself establish market value
Valuation or appraisal Value at a stated date and on a stated basis It should name the appraiser, currency, date and whether the figure is replacement, retail replacement or an auction estimate
Box, papers, links and original accessories Completeness that can influence desirability and an estimate Sotheby’s says completeness affects its estimate; missing items should be disclosed
Claim records Police report, repair quote and correspondence after an incident Store copies outside the damaged or stolen premises when possible

Store encrypted scans in two locations and keep paper originals in a secure place. A fireproof document safe can protect the physical file. PWI identifies a home safe as a security measure insurers may ask about; confirm the required rating, installation and use with your insurer. A safe may satisfy a condition of cover, but it does not increase the policy limit or value.

Do I need an appraisal for a Patek Philippe?

Often, yes—especially when the value is high, the watch is being scheduled for the first time, or the policy requires periodic evidence. Chubb’s current US jewelry guidance calls for a purchase invoice or recent appraisal for watches valued above $100,000. That threshold belongs to Chubb’s guidance; another insurer may require an appraisal at a lower value or accept a dealer invoice.

Ask the appraiser to state the purpose and value basis in plain language. These figures answer different questions:

Value basis Question answered How to use it
Agreed or scheduled insurance value What amount and settlement method does the policy promise if a covered loss occurs? Put the figure and escalation terms on the policy schedule
Replacement or retail-replacement value What would it cost to obtain a comparable replacement through the defined market? Common basis for a specialist insurance appraisal; confirm whether taxes, shipping and dealer margin are included
Auction estimate What selling range might an auction house expect in a particular sale? Useful market evidence, but not automatically an agreed insurance value
Secondary-market reference What are comparable watches being offered or traded for now? Helpful context because demand and prices can move quickly; it is not a policy promise

Swiss Watch Club describes insurance reports that inspect the case, dial, movement and bracelet, verify authenticity and serial or reference numbers, grade condition and state a replacement value. Ask whether the professional is qualified for high-value watches, independent of the seller, and familiar with the exact reference and market.

How can I get a current value when Patek Philippe will not provide one?

Patek Philippe’s FAQ says, “Patek Philippe cannot provide information of this kind,” in response to requests for current resale value. The manufacturer directs owners to an auction house or specialized dealer. That means the factory’s records can support identity and provenance, but they do not set the amount an insurer should pay.

Use an auction house for a market estimate

Sotheby’s says its estimate valuations are complimentary. Its specialists consider condition, ownership history, completeness, model, rarity and current desirability. It can review a watch from clear photographs and available information even when original documents are missing. Label the result as an auction-house estimate and ask a qualified appraiser for an insurance replacement figure when the policy requires one.

Give the valuer a complete brief

  • Provide the reference, visible and professionally verified serial numbers, metal and complication details.
  • Disclose service, polishing, replaced parts, restoration and known damage.
  • Include provenance, purchase documents, box, papers, spare links and original buckle.
  • State the country and currency in which the watch will be insured.
  • Request the date of valuation, assumptions, comparable evidence and the precise value definition.

Do not ask an appraiser to copy the purchase price or an online asking price without explaining the insurance purpose. The number must match the settlement language in the policy.

What is the difference between a Certificate of Origin and an Archive Extract?

They are different Patek Philippe documents. The Certificate of Origin accompanies a new watch and identifies its movement and case numbers; Patek describes it as “like a birth certificate delivered with every single new watch.” An Extract from the Archives is a partial transcript of archival information for an eligible older timepiece.

Feature Certificate of Origin Extract from the Archives
Purpose Original delivery, identity and warranty-related documentation Partial transcript of Patek Philippe archive information
Eligibility Delivered with a new watch First sale must have been more than 10 years before the request, under Patek’s current FAQ
Identifying information Movement and case numbers, with reference information Archive information supplied for the particular timepiece; scope is partial
Reissue or frequency Patek says the original cannot be re-issued One request per 12-month period per timepiece
Current fee Not a replacement service for a lost original 500 Swiss francs, according to Patek Philippe’s current Archive FAQ
Role in insurance Supporting identity and provenance Supporting provenance and archive details, not a current valuation

Patek requires photographs to verify visual compliance with the archive before issuing an Extract. Apply through the manufacturer’s current archive service and retain the resulting document with the rest of the evidence. An Extract cannot replace an appraisal, invoice or policy schedule because it does not state what the watch costs to replace today.

What does specialist Patek Philippe insurance cost?

Premium depends on location, value, security, claims history, deductible, risks covered and the insurer’s underwriting. Chubb’s US luxury-watch FAQ gives a typical range of 1% to 2% of appraised value and says its valuable-articles policy has no deductible, but those are representative Chubb US statements rather than a market-wide tariff.

For scale only, Hodinkee Insurance’s 2026 information for a Patek Philippe 5172G example lists a $73,700 manufacturer’s suggested retail price and an estimated average annual insurance cost of $689. The watch’s actual market value, eligibility and premium can differ, so do not use that example to price another reference.

Request written quotations that show the insured amount, deductible, territory, covered causes of loss, claim settlement method, security conditions and review date. A lower premium with a shared collection limit or a strict disappearance exclusion may provide less useful protection than a higher-priced scheduled policy.

How should I compare policies?

Policy question Why it changes the outcome What to obtain in writing
Is the watch scheduled individually? Identifies the exact Patek and avoids a low blanket contents limit Reference, serials, description and insured value on the schedule
Is the value agreed, replacement or market-based? Determines how a total loss is calculated Definition, assumptions, escalation and settlement clause
Are loss and disappearance covered? Some wordings cover theft but exclude unexplained loss Exact insuring clause and exclusions
Is accidental damage included? Important for a watch worn daily or transported often Repair, parts and depreciation treatment
Does cover apply worldwide? Travel or a second residence can create a territory gap Geographic limits, trip duration and notification rules
What security is required? A safe, alarm or storage condition can affect claim validity Safe rating, anchoring, alarm and overnight-storage wording
How is value kept current? Fast market changes can produce underinsurance Index-linking, extended replacement and appraisal interval
What deductible applies? Changes the cash paid on a partial or total loss Deductible by peril and any collection-level deductible

Ask whether the insurer accepts an auction-house estimate, a dealer letter or only an appraisal from a particular professional. Confirm the currency and whether taxes, import costs, shipping and authentication are included in a replacement settlement.

How often should I update a Patek Philippe valuation?

Review the value at least annually for a high-end watch unless the policy demands a shorter interval. Insurance Times quotes brokers recommending annual valuations because market movement can create underinsurance quickly. PWI says values can move and asks for a valuation no more than a few years old. Follow the stricter requirement in your own policy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Request an earlier review after a major market move, a professional service, restoration, replacement of a dial or bracelet, a change in completeness, an inheritance, or a move to another country. Keep the prior valuation so the file shows how the figure changed, but make clear which document is current.

What to check at each review

  • Reference, case and movement numbers still match the schedule.
  • Condition and originality description reflects any service or replacement parts.
  • Box, papers, links and buckle are still present and photographed.
  • Value basis, currency and date are explicit.
  • Policy limit is high enough for the stated replacement method and local taxes or costs.
  • Security, travel and residence details remain accurate.

What should I do if the watch is lost, stolen or damaged?

  1. Protect people first and prevent further damage; do not attempt a risky recovery or open the case.
  2. Notify the insurer promptly using the policy’s claims route and ask what evidence must be preserved.
  3. Report theft or unexplained disappearance to the police and obtain the report number.
  4. Provide the schedule, invoice or ownership record, Certificate of Origin or Archive Extract, photographs, valuation and service history.
  5. For damage, obtain a written diagnosis and repair estimate from an Authorized Retailer or Authorized Service Center if the insurer requests one.
  6. Keep every email, receipt, police document and shipping record, and do not authorize a repair or disposal until the insurer agrees.

The claim is judged under the policy wording, not solely by the watch’s reputation or a later auction result. A complete, dated file makes it easier to establish what was owned, its condition and the value basis selected before the event.

What mistakes commonly leave Patek owners underinsured?

Relying on the homeowners limit

A blanket jewelry limit can be far below the watch’s replacement cost. Check the sub-limit before assuming the watch is protected.

Using the purchase price forever

A historic invoice proves a transaction but may not reflect today’s market, currency or replacement cost. Obtain a current valuation on the basis the policy uses.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Calling an Archive Extract an appraisal

The Extract supplies archive information for an eligible watch. It does not state a current resale or replacement value.

Opening the case at home

Removing the case back can damage the watch or create an authenticity dispute. Have an Authorized Retailer or Authorized Service Center inspect internal numbers.

Ignoring missing accessories

Sotheby’s says completeness influences an estimate. Record missing box, papers, links or buckle honestly and ask how the insurer treats them.

Leaving the schedule unchanged after a service

Condition, originality and value can change after restoration or parts replacement. Send the updated report to the insurer and retain the service invoice.

What is the practical checklist for insuring a Patek Philippe?

  1. Identify the reference, movement and case numbers without opening the case yourself.
  2. Photograph the watch, markings, condition, box, papers and accessories; add a date indicator when required.
  3. Collect the Certificate of Origin, invoice or ownership paperwork, service records and warranty material.
  4. Obtain a current appraisal that states its date, currency, appraiser and value basis.
  5. Ask at least one specialist insurer how it handles agreed value, disappearance, travel, security, deductibles and increases.
  6. List the watch individually and save the signed schedule with encrypted digital and secure paper copies.
  7. Review the file annually and after market, service, restoration, completeness or location changes.

The strongest file combines manufacturer documentation, transaction evidence, condition photographs and a current value opinion. Insurance decisions still depend on the policy and local law, so confirm every threshold and exclusion with the insurer serving your country.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I insure a Patek Philippe without its original papers?

Often, an insurer can consider other evidence, such as clear photographs, an invoice, service records, a specialist appraisal and an Archive Extract where eligible. Acceptance is underwriting-specific, so ask what substitutes are acceptable before scheduling the watch.

Does a Patek Philippe Archive Extract prove authenticity?

It is supporting archive and provenance evidence for a particular eligible timepiece, not a standalone guarantee of present condition or a current value. An insurer may still request an inspection, invoice or independent appraisal.

Will insurance pay the price I see at auction?

Not automatically. An auction estimate or realized price may reflect a particular venue, buyer demand and selling costs, while the policy may promise an agreed or replacement value under its own settlement clause.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Should I insure a watch kept in a bank safe-deposit box?

Tell the insurer where it is stored and ask whether the policy covers the bank’s premises, transport to and from the box and any access restrictions. Some policies require specific security or may treat a commercial vault differently from a residence.

What happens if my Patek’s value rises above the scheduled amount during the year?

Contact the insurer before a loss and request an updated appraisal or endorsement. Index-linking or extended-replacement clauses may help, but their limits and collection caps differ, so do not assume automatic full protection.
