The safest way to insure a Richard Mille is to have it individually scheduled at its current value under a valuable-articles endorsement, a specialist watch policy, or a prestige-home policy. Standard homeowners and renters policies often apply a jewelry or watch sublimit that is far below the value of a high-end watch. Before paying for cover, obtain written confirmation of whether theft while worn, robbery, travel, mysterious disappearance, accidental damage, valuation method, deductibles, safe requirements and unattended-storage rules apply in your territory.
Start with your invoice and a recent professional valuation, then disclose exactly where and how you keep and wear the watch. The schedule and full wording—not an advertisement or verbal assurance—determine whether a claim is paid.

What insurance structure should I use for a Richard Mille?
For one or a few watches, a separately listed valuable-articles or scheduled-personal-property endorsement is usually the simplest route. A standalone specialist policy is more suitable for an ultra-high-value watch, several watches, unusual risks or a collection that needs its own terms. A prestige-home policy can coordinate watches with other high-value property.
Scheduled personal-property or valuable-articles endorsement
This adds the watch to an existing home, renters or condominium policy as a named item. The schedule should identify the make, model, reference and serial number, and state the insured value and loss basis. Liberty Mutual describes scheduled endorsements as one of the common ways to protect property whose value exceeds a standard contents sublimit.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Ask whether the watch is separately listed rather than covered under a general jewelry limit.
- Confirm whether settlement is agreed value, stated value or replacement cost.
- Ask if the deductible is waived for the scheduled item and whether a separate deductible applies to other losses.
- Check whether the endorsement follows the watch worldwide or only within specified territories.
Standalone specialist watch or collection policy
A specialist policy can be built around rare or very expensive watches and may offer broader wording for mysterious disappearance, travel, accidental damage or multiple locations. It may also accommodate a collection whose members have different values and storage arrangements. Ask whether every model and location is acceptable before assuming that a policy written for ordinary jewelry will respond to a Richard Mille.
Prestige-home policy with integrated valuables
High-net-worth household policies can combine watches, jewelry, art and other property under one claims and security framework. This can simplify coordination when a household has several collections, but it does not remove the need to check each watch’s schedule, valuation and storage conditions. Elevate and Stanhope describe integrated high-value-home and specialist collection approaches; availability and licensing depend on your jurisdiction.

Does homeowners or renters insurance cover a luxury watch?
It may provide some cover, but the standard contents limit is often too low for a Richard Mille. Many policies impose a jewelry or watch sublimit that applies to theft even when the rest of your contents are insured for a much larger amount.
Read the declarations page and the definition of jewelry, watches and valuable articles. A general contents limit can leave a large gap: if the watch is worth substantially more than the sublimit, the insurer may pay only up to that sublimit, subject to the policy deductible and exclusions. Scheduling the watch separately is intended to avoid that mismatch.
Do not infer coverage from a broker’s statement that the watch is “on the policy.” Obtain a schedule showing the item, amount, loss basis, deductible and territory, and keep the complete wording with it.
How do I value a Richard Mille for insurance?
Give the insurer a defensible current value and ask how that figure will be used after a loss. Depending on the carrier, settlement may use an agreed value, a stated value, market value or documented replacement cost; these are not interchangeable.

Requirements vary by insurer and location. Chubb says an appraisal is required for an individual watch valued at $100,000 or more. Progressive says it requires an appraisal for watches valued at $5,000 or more, while unaffiliated carriers may set different thresholds. Liberty Mutual says professional appraisals are usually expected to have been completed within the previous five years.

Those thresholds are carrier rules, not a universal legal standard. Ask what credentials the appraiser must have, what information the report must contain and when an updated report is triggered by a price change, sale, modification or major service.
What the valuation file should contain
- Manufacturer, model, reference and serial number.
- Metal, movement, complications, limited-edition information and accessories that affect value.
- Condition, service history and any replacement parts.
- Recent comparable market evidence or a documented replacement source, where the appraiser uses it.
- Date of inspection, appraiser identity and the valuation basis.
Keep the invoice or bill of sale alongside the appraisal. A receipt proves a transaction; it does not necessarily establish today’s replacement cost. Conversely, an appraisal without evidence that you own the specific serial-numbered watch can leave an ownership question during a claim.
How often should I update the value?
Review the value at renewal and whenever market prices move materially, the watch is serviced or modified, or you acquire a comparable reference. A five-year-old appraisal may satisfy one carrier’s general rule yet still understate a rapidly changing market. Ask the insurer to confirm in writing whether an updated appraisal or an agreed-value endorsement is needed.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHow much does luxury-watch insurance cost?
There is no reliable market-wide percentage. Chubb publishes a typical indication of 1%–2% of appraised value, but that is its own general range, not a guaranteed quote or a universal rate. A $100,000 watch would therefore have a very broad illustrative range of $1,000–$2,000 per year under that indication, before any carrier-specific underwriting, territory, security or deductible adjustments; it is not a quotation.
Premium can also reflect the number of watches, claims history, location, how often the watch is worn, travel, storage, alarm protection, safe requirements, deductible and whether accidental damage or mysterious disappearance is included. Ask the broker to identify each assumption used in the quote and whether the price is recurring or promotional.
Chubb says market value before loss may be paid up to 150% of the insured value, subject to the applicable watch or collection maximum. That ceiling is a Chubb feature and must not be treated as a standard market rule. Confirm the maximum, any inflation protection and the treatment of a collection whose total value changes.
What theft situations should the policy cover?
“Theft” is not a complete description of the risk. Ask the insurer to address each circumstance in the schedule or wording, because a policy can cover burglary at home while excluding an unattended bag, a vehicle or a loss whose circumstances cannot be established.

Theft or robbery while the watch is worn
Ask whether robbery from your person is covered and how the wording defines force, threat and consent. Some policies distinguish a direct robbery from theft after you voluntarily hand over the watch. Chubb advertises theft and worldwide protection on its valuable-articles coverage, but the actual territorial, custody and reporting conditions still govern a claim.
Mysterious disappearance
This describes a loss where you cannot identify when or how the watch vanished. Chubb advertises mysterious-disappearance cover, while other specialist policies may exclude it or offer it only by endorsement. If this protection matters, have the words “mysterious disappearance” and any deductible or evidence requirement confirmed in writing.
Travel, hotels and temporary locations
Worldwide wording does not automatically mean every travel scenario is covered. Ask about declared countries, maximum time abroad, checked baggage, hotel rooms, a watch left in a rental property, and storage in a vehicle or luggage. Confirm whether the watch must remain in your immediate custody and whether a hotel safe satisfies any unattended-storage condition.
Vehicle, bag and room exclusions
Many policies restrict or exclude theft from an unattended vehicle, unattended bag or unattended room. Ask whether a locked trunk, hotel safe, personal safe or security box changes the result, and whether there is a maximum amount payable in each setting.
Accidental damage and ordinary deterioration
A theft policy may not cover scratches, wear and tear, cosmetic damage, servicing or routine maintenance. If you want accidental-damage protection, list it as a separate coverage question rather than assuming it follows theft cover. Specialist and prestige-home policies often offer broader physical-damage options, but the exclusions still need to be read.
Do I need a safe or alarm for watch insurance?
Security can be a condition of coverage, not merely a way to lower the premium. Ripe’s wording, for example, requires operating security devices and a locked safe for specified home-theft cover, with clear forcible or violent entry or exit. Other insurers may prescribe a safe standard, an alarm certification or different unattended-storage rules.
- Ask whether a safe is required whenever the watch is not being worn or only when you are away from home.
- Ask what safe rating, anchoring or installation standard applies.
- Confirm which alarm, camera or other security devices must be active and whether they require professional monitoring.
- Disclose secondary residences, offices, hotels, vehicles and vaults where the watch may be kept.
- Keep purchase and installation records for the safe and alarm, plus maintenance or monitoring records if the policy requires them.
Never assume that placing the watch in a home safe cures a breach caused by an inactive alarm or an excluded location. Have the broker explain the condition in plain language and show where it appears in the wording.

What documents should I prepare before buying cover?
Create a digital and physical ownership file before the policy starts. Cloud-backed or encrypted copies help if the home and its records are lost together.

- Current professional valuation and the appraiser’s contact details.
- Clear, dated photographs of the dial, case, clasp, movement if visible, packaging and identifying marks.
- Reference and serial numbers, warranty card, service invoices and purchase history.
- Prior insurance schedule, endorsements, deductibles and correspondence confirming special terms.
- Safe, alarm and storage details, including locations and operating procedures.
Photograph the watch from several angles and retain an image that shows the serial number without publishing it publicly. Update the file after service, modification, sale, inheritance or a move.
How do I arrange the policy step by step?
- Establish ownership and value. Gather the invoice, serial details, photographs and a current appraisal or other valuation accepted by the carrier.
- Describe real use. Tell the broker how often you wear the watch, where it is stored, where you travel and whether anyone else may possess it. Do not describe occasional travel or storage more narrowly than your actual habits.
- Obtain quotes through a licensed channel. Verify the broker or insurer is authorized in your jurisdiction and ask whether the proposed product is an endorsement, a standalone specialist policy or a prestige-home contract.
- Compare the loss basis. Put agreed value, stated value, replacement cost, market-value limits and any 150% ceiling side by side. Note whether the amount is per watch or shared across a collection.
- Test the exclusions. Ask direct questions about worn robbery, mysterious disappearance, travel, vehicles, unattended rooms, deception, accidental damage, wear and tear and servicing.
- Confirm security conditions. Record safe specifications, anchoring, alarm activation, monitoring and any forcible-entry requirement. Ask what happens if a device fails or is temporarily offline.
- Read the issued schedule and wording. Check the spelling of the model, reference and serial number, insured amount, effective date, deductible, territories and listed locations before cancelling other cover.
- Set a review reminder. Recheck value, storage, travel and collection totals at each renewal and after a material market or ownership change.
What should I do if my luxury watch is stolen?
Act quickly and preserve evidence. The policy may impose a prompt-notice requirement, and a delay can make it harder to establish the circumstances or recover surveillance evidence.
- Move to safety and contact emergency services if the theft involved violence or a threat.
- Make a police report where required and obtain the crime reference number.
- Write down the date, time, location, route, people present and exactly what happened while details are fresh.
- Notify the insurer or broker immediately through the claims channel in the policy.
- Provide the schedule, invoice, appraisal, photographs, serial number and proof of ownership, but keep originals.
- Preserve messages, receipts, travel records, video footage and witness details. Do not publish unverified accusations or alter records.
- Ask what further proof, sworn statement or cooperation is required and record every claim reference and deadline.
If the watch is recovered, do not arrange repairs or return it to use until the insurer and police advise you. Inspection can affect the valuation of damage and the chain of evidence.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which policy wording pitfalls cause claim disputes?
- Unscheduled item: the watch is mentioned in an application but not shown on the final schedule.
- Stale or unsupported value: the appraisal is too old, lacks the serial number or does not match the watch delivered.
- Unreported location: the watch is kept at a second home, office, vehicle or overseas property not disclosed to the insurer.
- Security breach: an alarm is inactive, a required safe is unlocked, or the safe does not meet the stated standard.
- Unattended-storage exclusion: the watch was left in a bag, room or car contrary to the wording.
- Misunderstood disappearance cover: the policy covers burglary but not a loss whose cause cannot be identified.
- Collection cap: several watches share one limit even though each appears on an inventory.
- Deception and voluntary parting: the wording treats a watch handed over after a fraudulent transaction differently from robbery.
Ask the insurer to answer these points in an email or endorsement. A written clarification attached to the policy is more useful than a sales conversation that cannot be matched to the issued terms.

How can I keep the policy accurate as the watch changes?
Tell the insurer about a sale, gift, inheritance, trade, modification, extended loan or move before the change creates a coverage gap. A watch lent to another person may be subject to different custody or ownership terms than a watch you wear yourself.
At renewal, reconcile the schedule against your collection inventory, confirm each serial number and location, and ask whether a new appraisal is required. If market values rise above the scheduled amount, request an endorsement rather than assuming a general inflation clause will bridge the difference.

Is a specialist policy necessary for every luxury watch?
No. A properly written scheduled endorsement can be adequate for a single watch when its value, travel, storage and theft scenarios fit the carrier’s rules. A specialist or prestige-home policy becomes more compelling when the watch is exceptionally valuable, difficult to replace, part of a collection, frequently taken abroad or exposed to risks that a standard home endorsement excludes.
The deciding test is the wording: does it insure the watch at a defensible value, in the places and situations where you actually use it, with security conditions you can consistently satisfy?
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I insure a pre-owned or privately purchased Richard Mille?
Usually, but the insurer will need evidence that you own the specific watch and a valuation it accepts. Provide the bill of sale, payment record, serial-number photographs and any service documentation; ask whether a dealer inspection or additional authentication is required.
What if my watch appreciates after I buy the policy?
Contact the insurer before renewal and request a revised amount or endorsement. Do not rely on an old receipt or assume that a collection limit automatically increases with market prices.
Does insurance cover a watch I lend to a family member?
Do not assume it does. Lending changes possession and may affect who is an insured person, where the watch is located and whether custody or unattended-storage conditions are met; obtain written confirmation before the loan.
Can I claim if the watch disappears but I cannot prove a burglary?
Only if the policy includes mysterious-disappearance or an equivalent unspecific-loss cover. If it does, the insurer may still require prompt notice, a police report and evidence of ownership, value and the circumstances you can establish.
