To make your Apple Watch vibrate for alerts, open Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Haptics and choose Default or Prominent. Apple calls these taps haptics; if alerts are missing or hard to feel, check the active mode, the affected app’s notification settings, and how the watch fits against your skin.
Turn on or strengthen Apple Watch haptics
- Open Settings on your Apple Watch.
- Tap Sounds & Haptics.
- Tap Haptics.
- Select Default or Prominent. Choose Off only if you do not want haptic alerts.
Prominent adds an extra tap before some haptic alerts, making them easier to notice. The exact labels can vary by watchOS version. On the paired iPhone, open the Apple Watch app, tap My Watch > Sounds & Haptics to adjust haptics, or review specific app notification settings.
Sound volume and haptics are separate controls. You can silence sounds and still receive haptic alerts.
Choose a mode that matches how you want alerts
| Mode | Sounds | Haptics | When to use it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Silent Mode | Off | On, if allowed | Keep alerts quiet but still feel them. |
| Theater Mode | Off | On, if allowed | Keep sounds off and prevent the display from waking when you raise your wrist. |
| Do Not Disturb | Off | Off | Prevent alerts and haptics for a chosen period. |
| Focus | Off, with configured exceptions | Off, with configured exceptions | Filter notifications using your Focus rules. |
To switch modes, press the side button to open Control Center and check the active mode. Silent Mode is compatible with haptic notifications; Do Not Disturb and Focus can suppress them unless the relevant people or apps are allowed by your settings.

Troubleshoot missing or faint taps
- Confirm Haptics is set to Default or Prominent, not Off.
- Check Control Center for Do Not Disturb or another active Focus. Review its allowed people, apps, and schedule if you expect an exception.
- On your iPhone, open the Apple Watch app and review My Watch > Notifications for the affected app.
- Wear the watch snugly and comfortably, with its back touching your skin. A loose fit can make taps harder to feel.
- If expected taps remain absent while the watch is worn correctly, contact Apple Support; service may be needed.
Crown Haptics and System Haptics are separate controls on supported software. Crown Haptics provide feedback while scrolling with the Digital Crown; they do not replace notification haptics.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Silent Mode stop Apple Watch from vibrating?
No. Silent Mode mutes sounds while allowing haptic notifications to continue when haptics are enabled. Theater Mode also retains haptic notifications while silencing sound.

Prominent adds an extra haptic tap before some alerts. It can make alerts easier to notice, but it is not a universal vibration-strength setting.
Why does one app not vibrate while other Apple Watch alerts do?
Review that app’s notification settings in the Apple Watch app on your iPhone. App-specific controls can affect whether its notifications alert your watch.
