On many chronograph watches with three subdials, one small dial shows running seconds, one counts elapsed minutes, and one counts elapsed hours, while the long central hand serves as the chronograph seconds hand. That is a common arrangement, not a rule. The roles, ranges and positions of the subdials are set by the movement inside your watch, so the reliable way to read your own watch is to match its markings to its own manual or to the movement’s specification.
Start with the normal time display
A chronograph adds a stopwatch to a watch that already tells the time. The two functions are separate, and reading the subdials correctly depends on keeping them apart. The hour, minute and ordinary seconds hands show the time of day. The chronograph hands, which are usually the long central seconds hand plus one or two counters, show elapsed time once you start the stopwatch function. On many models the central seconds hand rests at zero while the chronograph is idle.
A small seconds subdial is where many owners get confused. On a typical layout it keeps running whenever the watch is wound and set, so it tells you the watch is ticking, not that you are timing anything. Timex describes a common three-subdial layout with running seconds, elapsed minutes and a 24-hour time register. That description is useful for orientation, but it is one arrangement among several.
The roles you are most likely to see
Three-subdial chronographs do not all use the same functions. The table below lists the roles named in the manufacturer and consumer material cited in this guide. Your watch may use some of them, all of them, or a different combination.

| Subdial role | What it shows | Where it is described |
|---|---|---|
| Running (small) seconds | Ordinary timekeeping seconds, continuing whether or not the chronograph runs | Timex common three-subdial layout; Invicta manual lists small seconds as a possible role |
| Elapsed minutes | Chronograph minutes accumulated since the last reset | Timex; Invicta manual |
| Elapsed hours | Chronograph hours accumulated since the last reset | Invicta manual |
| 24-hour time register | The hour of the day on a 24-hour scale, not elapsed time | Timex common three-subdial layout |
| Tenths of a second | Fractional elapsed time on a finer scale | Invicta manual lists tenths of a second as a possible function |
| Combined minutes and hours counter | Elapsed minutes and elapsed hours on one subdial, separated by its numerals | IWC Aquatimer manual page (a reproduced manual page, used here only to show this configuration) |
Reading elapsed time, step by step
- Find the chronograph seconds hand. On most watches this is the long central hand. Confirm it is not the hand that is always moving on a small dial. If the manual or the dial labels a different hand as the stopwatch hand, follow that labeling.
- Read the central hand against the seconds scale. Use the printed seconds track around the dial. Note whether the scale is marked every second, every fifth second or in finer divisions.
- Read the elapsed-minute counter. Look for the subdial labeled or numbered as minutes. Read the hand’s position against its own numerals, not against the hour markers of the main dial.
- Read the elapsed-hour counter, if there is one. Some watches have a separate hour counter. Others combine minutes and hours on one register. Check which numerals belong to which unit before adding anything.
- Add the readings. A reading of 2 hours, 14 minutes and 35 seconds means the hour counter reads 2, the minute counter reads 14, and the central hand reads 35 seconds on its scale.
- Check the counter’s range. Do not assume a counter wraps around at a particular value. The next section explains why.
Why the same layout can count differently
Counter ranges and increments vary by movement. The three Citizen movements below illustrate how far the specifications can differ. The figures are taken from Citizen’s movement instructions and describe those named movements only, not chronographs in general. The instruction document in the cited source does not state a publication date.
| Source and movement | Counter or hand | Stated range | Stated increment |
|---|---|---|---|
| Citizen 0510 | Chronograph timing | Up to 12 hours | One second |
| Citizen 0540 | Chronograph timing | Up to 60 minutes | One second |
| Citizen 0560 | Chronograph timing | Up to 12 hours | 1/20 second (0.05 second) |
| Zodiac “Chronograph 3 Eyes” | Hour counter | One revolution per 12 hours | Not stated |
| Zodiac “Chronograph 3 Eyes” | Center stop-second hand | One revolution per 60 seconds | Not stated |
The practical lesson is that a 60-minute counter on one watch and a 12-hour counter on another are not interchangeable, even when the dials look alike. A 0560-type resolution of 1/20 second also means the central hand can be read more finely than on a one-second movement. Read the numerals on your own dial before drawing conclusions.

Check the manual when the markings do not match
Dial position is not a reliable way to identify a subdial’s function. Use these checks before relying on a reading:
- The small subdial is not always running seconds. A 24-hour indicator, which shows the time of day, may occupy that position. Check whether the numerals run to 24.
- Two counters may share one subdial. The IWC Aquatimer manual page describes a counter that carries both elapsed minutes and elapsed hours. Look for a second set of numerals before assuming one unit per register.
- Positions differ across designs. Invicta’s manual notes that subdial roles and positions vary from design to design, so a diagram from one model does not describe another.
- The manual is the authority. If the markings still do not resolve the question, identify the model or movement reference and read the instructions for that exact configuration.
Operating the pushers
Pusher operation is also model-specific. In the Zodiac “Chronograph 3 Eyes” instructions, pusher A starts the central stop-second hand, a second press of pusher A stops timing, and pusher B resets the chronograph hands to zero. That is one example, not a universal sequence. Do not apply it to a different watch without checking its instructions.

Citizen’s movement instructions also describe accumulated timing, in which the chronograph can be stopped and restarted to add up several intervals before a final stop and reset. The sequence depends on the movement, so confirm which pusher does what on your watch before timing anything important.
Zodiac cautions against engaging the pushers while the watch is in contact with water. If your watch is water resistant, check the manual’s guidance on pusher use in wet conditions before operating it.

The tachymeter is not one of the subdials
A tachymeter is a separate scale, usually on the dial’s outer ring or on the bezel, that can measure speed over a fixed distance. It is not one of the three counters. Zodiac’s official instructions define it this way: “The Tachymeter function measures the rate of speed of an object over a fixed distance.” The instructions illustrate starting timing at one distance marker and reading the scale when the next unit of distance is reached. Keep the tachymeter separate from the subdial readings when you check elapsed time.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the sources do and do not establish
The figures in this guide come from manufacturer and consumer material. They describe specific movements and models, and they do not add up to a general standard for three-subdial chronographs. No reliable public statistic tells us how common each subdial layout is or how accurate any layout is, so this guide does not offer one.
