The safest way to remove an Apple Watch from an iPhone is to unpair it in the Apple Watch app. Keep both devices nearby, open Apple Watch on the paired iPhone, then go to My Watch > All Watches > info button > Unpair Apple Watch. Confirm the watch, choose what to do with its cellular plan if prompted, and enter the Apple Account password. Unpairing erases the watch and removes Activation Lock, making it ready to set up with another iPhone or transfer to a new owner.
A reset performed only on the watch is different: it erases the watch but does not remove Activation Lock. Use the iPhone-based method whenever possible, especially before selling, gifting, recycling, or trading in the watch.

- Place the Apple Watch and paired iPhone near each other.
- Open the Apple Watch app on the iPhone.
- Tap My Watch.
- Tap All Watches at the top of the screen.
- Tap the info button next to the watch you want to remove.
- Tap Unpair Apple Watch.
- Confirm the watch name or tap the second unpair confirmation when shown.
- If it is a GPS + Cellular model, choose whether to keep or remove the cellular plan.
- Enter the Apple Account password if requested. This step is important because it removes Activation Lock.
- Wait until the erase and unpair process finishes. The watch can then be set up again or left powered off for its next owner.
The iPhone may create a backup of the Apple Watch during unpairing. That can help if you later pair the same watch again or set up another Apple Watch. It does not mean that every category of Health or Activity information is automatically preserved in every situation; keep your iPhone backup and Apple Account data-management settings in mind if those records matter.
What to do with the cellular plan
When a cellular Apple Watch is unpaired, the Apple Watch app may ask whether to keep or remove the plan. Choose based on what you will do next:

- Back up the iPhone if you may need the watch’s data when setting up another watch.
- Unpair the watch from the paired iPhone rather than only erasing it from the watch.
- Remove the cellular plan if you are giving up the watch, and contact the carrier if the service must be canceled.
- Enter the Apple Account password during unpairing so Activation Lock is removed.
- Wait for the process to finish and confirm that the watch displays the initial setup screen rather than your personal watch face or data.
- Do not give the buyer your Apple Account password. If the watch still requests the previous owner’s account during setup, it is not ready for transfer.
Trade-in availability, value, and recycling options can vary by location and change over time. Remove Activation Lock before sending the watch.

- On the Apple Watch, open Settings.
- Tap General.
- Tap Reset.
- Tap Erase All Content and Settings.
- Enter the watch passcode if requested.
- For a cellular watch, choose whether to keep or remove the cellular plan.
- Tap Erase All to confirm.
This restores the watch to factory settings, but it does not remove Activation Lock. The Apple Account and password originally associated with the watch may still be required before it can be activated with another iPhone. For a sale or gift, Apple’s preferred solution is still to unpair through the paired iPhone whenever that is possible.
If the watch has already been given to someone else
If Find My was not turned off before the transfer, the previous owner can use Find Devices on iCloud.com to erase the watch and then remove it from the account. Apple documents different behavior depending on whether the device is online or offline, so remote removal may not be immediate. The new owner may still need the previous owner to complete Activation Lock removal; a remote erase alone does not prove the watch is ready for a new owner.
If you forgot the Apple Watch passcode
A forgotten passcode requires erasing the watch and setting it up again. If the paired iPhone is available, use this route:
- Open the Apple Watch app on the iPhone.
- Go to My Watch > General > Reset.
- Choose Erase Apple Watch Content and Settings.
- Confirm the erase and enter the Apple Account password if requested.
- Choose whether to keep or remove a cellular plan if the option appears.
If the iPhone is not available, place the watch on its charger. Hold the side button until the power controls appear, then press and hold the Digital Crown until the erase screen appears. Confirm Reset twice. This erases the watch but does not by itself remove Activation Lock, so you will still need the associated Apple Account credentials for activation.
Unpairing versus erasing: why Activation Lock matters
Unpairing is more than a factory reset. It removes the watch’s relationship with the iPhone and, after Apple Account authentication, removes Activation Lock. Activation Lock is connected to the Apple Account used to enable the watch and helps prevent unauthorized reactivation.

A watch can look empty and still be locked. If setup asks for a previous owner’s Apple Account password, the watch has not been properly released. There is no legitimate generic reset that bypasses Activation Lock. The account owner must enter the credentials, complete account recovery, or remove the device from the account. Avoid third-party “Activation Lock bypass” services and tools.
Troubleshooting an Apple Watch that will not unpair
The watch does not appear in the Apple Watch app
- Confirm that you are using the iPhone currently paired with the watch.
- Keep the watch and iPhone close together.
- Check that Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are enabled on the iPhone.
- Make sure Airplane Mode is off on both devices.
- Restart both the iPhone and Apple Watch, then try the unpairing steps again.
The devices are disconnected
Check the connection indicators and repeat the steps after disabling Airplane Mode and enabling Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Restarting both devices can resolve a temporary communication problem. Do not start by inserting a tool or object into the watch case: Apple Watch does not have a SIM slot or a physical reset button.
You do not know the Apple Account password
You cannot legitimately remove Activation Lock with a generic reset. The account owner must authenticate or use Apple’s account-recovery process. If you bought the watch used, ask the previous owner to remove it from their account; a seller who cannot do that has not transferred usable ownership.
The watch is damaged or the process still fails
Routine unpairing does not require a repair kit or special tool. If a damaged watch or iPhone cannot complete the process after the connection checks above, use Apple’s support or an authorized service route for account and hardware guidance. Service availability and fees depend on the device, location, warranty, and problem.

For a normal removal, use Apple Watch app > My Watch > All Watches > info button > Unpair Apple Watch, then authenticate with the Apple Account password. Choose the cellular-plan option carefully. If you only erase the watch from its own Settings menu, it will be empty but may still be Activation Locked.
