To change an Apple Watch passcode, open Settings > Passcode > Change Passcode on the watch and follow the prompts. If the watch is paired and available, you can also use Apple Watch app > My Watch > Passcode > Change Passcode on the iPhone. If you have forgotten the code, you must erase the watch and set it up again.
Change an existing Apple Watch passcode
You can change a current passcode on the watch or from its paired iPhone. Apple recommends using a passcode different from your iPhone passcode.
On the Apple Watch
- Open the Settings app on your Apple Watch.
- Tap Passcode.
- Tap Change Passcode.
- Follow the onscreen prompts.
From the paired iPhone
- Open the Apple Watch app on the paired iPhone.
- Tap My Watch, then Passcode.
- Tap Change Passcode and follow the onscreen prompts. You may need to enter the new passcode on the watch.
If you have forgotten the current passcode, you cannot use the normal change procedure to recover or bypass it. See What to do if you forgot your Apple Watch passcode.
Set a passcode during Apple Watch setup
During setup, follow the prompts to create a passcode on the watch. Apple Watch also supports a passcode longer than four digits: turn off Simple Passcode in Settings > Passcode and follow the prompts.

Turn off the Apple Watch passcode
You can turn off the passcode on the watch or through its paired iPhone:
- On the watch: Open Settings > Passcode > Turn Passcode Off.
- On the iPhone: Open Apple Watch app > My Watch > Passcode > Turn Passcode Off.
Apple says turning off the passcode prevents use of features such as Apple Pay and unlocking a Mac with Apple Watch.

When passcode controls are unavailable
If Simple Passcode or Turn Passcode Off is unavailable, the iPhone synced with the watch may be managed by an organization, such as a company or school. Check with that organization’s administrator about its passcode policy.
Wrist Detection and passcodes
Wrist Detection does not change your passcode. It controls whether Apple Watch automatically locks when it is not being worn. Apple says turning it off affects automatic locking and unlocking, Apple Pay, activity, heart-rate, and fall-detection behavior. Find the setting under Settings > Passcode on the watch.

Erase Data after failed passcode attempts
Erase Data is an optional safeguard in Settings > Passcode. When enabled, the watch erases its data after 10 consecutive incorrect unlock attempts. This is not a passcode-recovery feature.
What to do if you forgot your Apple Watch passcode
If you forgot the passcode, Apple’s supported process is to erase the watch and set it up again. Choose the watch-side route if you have the watch and its charger, or the paired-iPhone route if you have that iPhone and the Apple Watch app. Both routes erase the watch; setup may offer the option to restore from a backup.

Erase the watch using the watch
- Put the Apple Watch on its charger.
- Press and hold the side button until the power controls appear.
- Press and hold the Digital Crown until the erase screen appears.
- Follow the onscreen prompts to reset and confirm erasure.
- After erasure, set up the watch again and restore from a backup if offered.
Erase the watch from the paired iPhone
- Open the Apple Watch app on the paired iPhone.
- Tap My Watch > General > Reset.
- Tap Erase Apple Watch Content and Settings.
- Confirm the erasure and follow the prompts to set up the watch again.
