How should a leather watch strap fit?
On a conventional pin buckle, choose the hole that holds the watch securely without pinching or restricting comfortable wrist movement. Seiko’s official instruction manual advises leaving “a little clearance with your wrist to ensure proper airflow.” It does not give a measurement, and the sources here do not establish a universal finger-gap or wrist-circumference rule. If none of the existing holes gives you a comfortable, secure fit, check the watch or strap maker’s adjustment guidance before altering the strap. The sources reviewed do not establish a generally safe method for punching an extra hole. For a valuable watch or an unfamiliar proprietary attachment, ask the brand or a qualified watch professional.
Check replacement strap compatibility
Before ordering a replacement leather watch strap, confirm the watch’s lug width, attachment style, buckle requirements, and the strap length you need. Also check the leather finish and its care requirements, and consider whether your usual activities expose it to sweat, water, or humidity. A rubber or metal strap may be more suitable if you regularly swim, take part in aquatic activities, or spend time in humid conditions or perspire heavily; Breitling’s care guidance recommends those materials for such use. How to care for a leather watch strap
Keep it dry and wipe off moisture
An ordinary leather strap is not made suitable for bathing, swimming, or water work just because the watch case is water-resistant. Seiko advises removing leather-band watches for those activities, except for its specified Aqua Free bands. Patek Philippe also warns that water can make leather straps age prematurely. After perspiration or accidental moisture, wipe the strap promptly with a soft, dry cloth. Remove the watch and let the strap dry naturally in a ventilated place at normal room temperature. Avoid products that can damage the finish

Choose a cleaning method for the leather finish
A soft, dry cloth is the cautious default supported by Seiko, TAG Heuer, and Hamilton. Instructions can differ by finish: Swatch allows a damp cloth and, if needed, mild soap for smooth or grained leather, but recommends a soft brush for nubuck. Use soap, conditioner, or a specialty cleaner only if the maker’s instructions for your particular strap allow it; do not assume a method suitable for one finish is suitable for all leather. When to replace a leather watch strap
Replace a strap if it is damaged, no longer holds the watch securely, or cannot be adjusted to a comfortable fit. Strap life varies with wear and exposure. Hamilton says its strap lasts an average of six to 12 months in normal daily wearing conditions; that is Hamilton’s manufacturer guidance, not a universal replacement interval.
