A strong watch wristshot comes down to three things: soft light, a clear view of the dial, and an angle that keeps reflections off the crystal. Start near a bright window, tap the dial to focus, adjust exposure if your phone allows it, and take several frames while making small angle changes. You can do it with the phone you already own.
How to take a clear watch wristshot
- Find soft light. Move near a bright window or another well-lit spot. Avoid direct, harsh light that creates blown highlights or deep shadows. Time+Tide’s wristshot advice emphasizes context and keeping the watch in focus.
- Make the watch visible. Clean the watch and move the cuff back enough to show the case and dial. Check that the hands or other important dial details are not hidden.
- Set a comfortable pose. Hold your wrist naturally and turn the watch face toward the camera. Keep most of the watch in frame, and make sure the sleeve does not cover it.
- Check reflections. Look at the crystal and dial for reflections of the phone, your face, or bright surroundings. Rotate your wrist or shift the camera slightly until the dial is easier to see.
- Focus and balance brightness. Tap the dial on your phone screen to focus. If your camera offers an exposure control, adjust it so the dial is neither lost in darkness nor washed out. Phone controls differ by device and software.
- Take a few versions. Make small changes to the wrist or camera angle between frames. Review the pictures at full size and choose one where the dial is sharp and readable, without distracting glare. If framing the shot one-handed is awkward, ask someone else to take it.
Control light and reflections without complicated gear
Changing the relative angle of the watch, camera, and light is the simplest way to reduce glare. A glossy crystal can reflect the photographer or nearby bright surfaces, so a small adjustment often matters more than adding equipment. As James Stacey puts it in Hodinkee’s wristshot guide, “Photography is about little more than light and a moment in time.”
For a more controlled setup, white foam core can bounce light into darker parts of the watch, while black foam core can block unwanted reflections. A white shirt can also act as a convenient bright surface to fill shadows. These are optional aids; the basic approach uses available light and a phone camera.
Make the composition feel natural
A wristshot does more than show a watch’s details: it shows how the watch looks worn and gives a sense of its scale. A sleeve, clothing texture, or setting can add useful context, but the watch should remain the clear subject. Keep the dial unobstructed and avoid letting a busy background or clothing pull attention away from it.

There is no single pose that suits every watch or setting. A relaxed wrist and a visible dial are a dependable starting point; adjust the framing to show the watch in a way that feels natural rather than forcing an awkward angle.
