You can take a 30-second, on-demand ECG on a compatible Pixel Watch by opening the Google ECG app, sitting still with your arms supported, and keeping a finger on the crown until the countdown ends. The watch uses electrical sensors in the crown and on its back to classify the tracing as Normal sinus rhythm, Atrial fibrillation, or Inconclusive. It can indicate signs of AFib, but it cannot diagnose every heart problem or replace a clinician’s 12-lead ECG.

This guide covers setup, the exact recording position, result meanings, inconclusive-reading fixes, eligibility, syncing and PDF export, medical-device cautions, and the difference between ECG and Irregular Rhythm Notifications.

How do I set up the ECG app on a Pixel Watch?

Set up the ECG app before you need a reading. Installation and first-time configuration use the watch and the Google Health phone app.

  1. On the watch, open the Play Store, search for Google ECG app, install it, and open it.
  2. If Google Health is not installed or configured on your phone, follow the prompts to install it and sign in.
  3. On the phone, open Google Health and go to Health → Health checks → ECG.
  4. Tap Get started and complete the setup, including selecting the wrist on which you wear the watch.

If the ECG app is missing, do not begin by repeatedly retrying a recording. First check that your watch model and country are supported, that you meet the age requirement, that the app is installed from the Play Store, and that Google Health setup is complete.

How should I position my Pixel Watch for an ECG?

Wear the watch snugly enough that the rear sensor remains against your skin, but not so tightly that it is uncomfortable. Position it approximately one finger’s width above the wrist bone.

  1. Sit down before starting.
  2. Rest both forearms and wrists on a solid surface, such as a table.
  3. Keep your feet on the floor and breathe normally.
  4. Make sure the back of the watch is flat against clean, dry skin.
  5. Use the wrist selected during setup.

Stillness and consistent skin contact matter because the app is measuring a very small electrical signal. Water, sweat, movement, a loose fit, or anything between the electrodes and your skin can reduce signal quality.

How do I take an ECG reading with my Pixel Watch?

Once the watch is fitted and you are seated, the recording itself takes 30 seconds.

  1. Open the ECG app on the watch and follow the start instruction shown on the display.
  2. Touch the crown with the finger or fingers indicated on the screen.
  3. Maintain that contact for the entire countdown. Do not touch another part of the watch or your other wrist.
  4. Remain still and breathe normally until the recording ends.
  5. Wait for the result screen.

Google may automatically enable Do Not Disturb during the reading so notifications do not interrupt the countdown. If the countdown starts over, the app detected too much movement or lost finger contact; reposition yourself and try again.

What do the Pixel Watch ECG results mean?

The app gives one of three classifications. These are screening results, not a complete medical diagnosis.

Result What it indicates What to do
Normal sinus rhythm The tracing resembles a regular rhythm generated by the heart’s normal pacemaker. Save the result if you want a record. A normal result does not rule out every heart condition or guarantee that you are well.
Atrial fibrillation The tracing shows signs of AFib, an irregular rhythm. Contact a doctor. Google states that only a doctor can diagnose AFib.
Inconclusive The app could not assess the rhythm because the heart rate was outside its supported range or the signal was inadequate. Improve your position and contact quality, then repeat the reading. Persistent inconclusive results or feeling unwell warrants medical advice.

An AFib classification is not the same as a confirmed diagnosis. Google Health Help Center explains: “Only a doctor can diagnose AFib, but the results of this assessment can let you know if your heart rhythm has signs of the condition.”

How do I view, save, or share a Pixel Watch ECG?

After the recording, the watch can show the classification, while Google Health stores the historical readings on the phone. The watch must have an LTE or Wi-Fi connection for ECG data to sync to Google Health.

  1. Connect the Pixel Watch to LTE or Wi-Fi.
  2. Open Google Health on your phone.
  3. Go to Health → Health checks → ECG.
  4. Open the reading you want to send or keep.
  5. Select Export PDF for your provider, then choose Download PDF.

The exported PDF is useful when a clinician asks to review the watch recording. It is a report of that particular single-lead-style assessment, not a replacement for an examination or a clinical 12-lead ECG.

Why is my Pixel Watch ECG inconclusive?

Google says the app cannot assess a reading when the heart rate is above 120 beats per minute or below 50 beats per minute. A reading can also be inconclusive when movement, poor electrode contact, or electrical interference makes the signal unreliable.

Heart rate or circumstances outside the app’s range

Recent exercise, stress, nervousness, alcohol, dehydration, infection, medicines, fitness level, or another arrhythmia can change heart rate. Wait until you are rested, seated, and breathing normally rather than taking the reading immediately after exertion.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Movement or lost finger contact

Support your forearms on a table, keep your feet planted, and hold the crown continuously. Avoid talking, shifting your arms, or touching another part of the watch. If the countdown restarts, start again only after restoring a steady position.

Poor skin contact

  • Clean and dry the watch back and your skin.
  • Adjust the band so the rear sensor stays against the skin without pinching.
  • Remove anything that interrupts contact between the electrodes and skin.
  • If your skin is extremely dry, a small amount of lotion may improve contact; wait until the surface is no longer wet or slippery.
  • Use the wrist selected during setup.

Electrical interference

Move away from nearby electronics and retry in a quiet, stable position. Water and sweat can interfere with the electrodes, so dry your wrist and the watch before recording.

When repeated inconclusive readings need medical advice

If the app remains inconclusive after you have corrected fit, stillness, skin contact, and timing, speak with a healthcare provider. Do the same if you feel unwell; the watch should not be used to delay medical care.

Can a Pixel Watch detect AFib?

Yes, the ECG app can identify a tracing with signs of atrial fibrillation or normal sinus rhythm when the signal is suitable. It is a qualitative, single-lead-style assessment comparable to a Lead I ECG, not a full diagnostic work-up.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Google says the app cannot detect all heart conditions. A clinical 12-lead ECG gathers electrical information from 12 different angles and can reveal findings that this watch assessment cannot. A normal Pixel Watch result therefore does not exclude every rhythm or structural problem.

Google reports that its ECG algorithm was evaluated in a clinical study of 440 people. On that study’s reported measures, it correctly identified people with AFib 98.7% of the time and correctly identified people with normal sinus rhythm 100% of the time. Google does not state the study’s publication year on the referenced help page; these figures should be understood as the company’s reported study results, not a guarantee for every user or situation.

What is the difference between ECG and Irregular Rhythm Notifications?

These are separate Pixel Watch features and should not be treated as interchangeable.

Feature How it works When it is used
ECG app Uses electrical sensors on the crown and back to make a user-initiated recording lasting 30 seconds. You start it when you want a tracing and keep a finger on the crown throughout.
Irregular Rhythm Notifications Uses background optical pulse-rate measurements while you are still or at rest; the data is not analysed in real time. It can look for patterns in the background rather than producing an on-demand electrical tracing.

An Irregular Rhythm Notification is not an ECG recording, and taking an ECG does not turn the notification feature into continuous real-time monitoring.

Which Pixel Watch models and countries support ECG?

Google’s current compatibility list names Pixel Watch, Pixel Watch 2, Pixel Watch 3, Pixel Watch 4, and Pixel Watch 5. Availability is also controlled by country and regulatory clearance, so a compatible model purchased or used in an unsupported location may not offer the app.

Eligibility factor Current information
Supported models Pixel Watch, Pixel Watch 2, Pixel Watch 3, Pixel Watch 4, and Pixel Watch 5.
Age Google states that the feature is not intended for people under 22.
Countries listed by Google Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Czech Republic, France, Germany, India, Ireland, Japan (excluding the original Pixel Watch), the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Puerto Rico, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
Ongoing availability Google says additional countries may be added as regulatory clearance is obtained.

Country support can change. If the app is unavailable, check Google’s current Pixel Watch and Google ECG compatibility information for your location rather than assuming a hardware fault.

What should I check if the ECG app is missing?

  • Model: Confirm that the watch is one of the supported Pixel Watch generations.
  • Country: Verify that ECG is cleared and available where the watch is being used.
  • Age: The feature is not intended for users under 22.
  • Play Store: On the watch, search specifically for Google ECG app and install it if listed.
  • Google Health: Install the phone app, sign in, and complete Health → Health checks → ECG → Get started.
  • Updates and connection: Keep the watch connected while completing setup so the phone and watch can exchange the required health data.

If all of these conditions are satisfied and the app still does not appear, contact Google support or a healthcare professional for help rather than substituting a different app that claims to provide an ECG.

Can I use Pixel Watch ECG with a pacemaker or other implanted device?

Google warns that the watch’s radios, electromagnetic fields, and magnets may interfere with pacemakers or other implanted medical devices. If you have an implanted device, keep the watch and charger at a safe distance as directed by your device manufacturer and ask your healthcare provider whether using the watch is appropriate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Accessory choice can also matter. Google documents the Metal Mesh Band and Metal Slim Band as incompatible with ECG on the original Pixel Watch. If you use that model, switch to a compatible band before attempting an ECG; do not assume that every conductive-looking band will work.

How accurate is a Pixel Watch ECG?

The most specific published figures supplied by Google come from its clinical study of 440 people: 98.7% correct identification of participants with AFib and 100% correct identification of participants with normal sinus rhythm. Those are study results reported by Google, and the help page does not provide a publication year.

Accuracy in an individual reading still depends on a usable signal, correct fit, a supported heart-rate range, and the rhythm being assessed. The app’s limited classification means that an inconclusive or normal result cannot answer every clinical question.

When should I stop relying on the watch and contact a clinician?

Contact a healthcare provider after an AFib classification, after repeated inconclusive readings, or whenever you feel unwell. Bring the exported PDF if a clinician asks for the recording, but let the clinician decide whether you need a formal ECG, examination, or additional tests.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not wait for a watch result if you have severe or rapidly worsening symptoms such as chest pain, fainting, serious breathing difficulty, or other signs that feel like an emergency; seek urgent medical care through your local emergency service.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a Pixel Watch ECG detect a heart attack?

No. The ECG app is designed to classify a short rhythm tracing as normal sinus rhythm, signs of AFib, or inconclusive, and Google says it cannot detect all heart conditions. A normal watch result should never be used to rule out a heart attack or other emergency.

Does the Pixel Watch record an ECG without my phone nearby?

The recording is initiated on the watch, but Google Health needs the watch connected to LTE or Wi-Fi to sync the ECG data. You need the phone app for first-time setup, historical readings, and PDF export.

How often should I take an ECG on my Pixel Watch?

Google does not specify a universal schedule in the supplied guidance. Use the app when you have a reason to record a rhythm or when a clinician asks for readings, and follow medical advice instead of taking repeated recordings to chase a particular classification.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do if my Pixel Watch says AFib but I feel normal?

Treat the result as a reason to contact a healthcare provider, not as a confirmed diagnosis. Save or export the PDF so the clinician can review it, and seek urgent care if symptoms develop or become severe.
