Have the iPhone that is currently paired with the watch? Open the Watch app and choose My Watch → All Watches → info → Unpair Apple Watch. This is the correct method for selling, giving away, trading in, or cleanly moving the watch: it erases the watch, attempts a final backup, and removes Activation Lock after you enter your Apple Account password.
Do not have the paired iPhone? You can erase the watch from Settings → General → Reset → Erase All Content and Settings, but that is only a factory reset. It does not remove Activation Lock. If another person will use the watch, you must also remove it from Find My on iCloud.com.
The distinction between unpairing and erasing is the key to avoiding a watch that looks blank but still cannot be activated by its new owner.
Choose the right method first
Use the method that matches what you have and what you intend to do with the watch. Apple’s current documentation, including its watchOS 26 User Guide, treats the Watch app’s Unpair Apple Watch command differently from an erase performed on the watch itself. UI wording can vary slightly by iOS or watchOS version.

Decision rule: use the paired iPhone whenever possible. It gives you the best chance of preserving current watch data and performs the cleanest ownership transfer. If you are keeping the watch, a watch-only reset may be enough. If you are transferring it to somebody else, erasing alone is not enough—Activation Lock must also be removed.

Before you start
- Have the Apple Account password associated with the watch available. This password is primarily needed to disable Activation Lock and complete the ownership transfer; erasing local content by itself is a separate action.
- Know the Apple Watch passcode, unless you are using the forgotten-passcode reset procedure below.
- For normal iPhone unpairing, keep the watch and paired iPhone close together and make sure both have enough battery.
- Decide whether to keep or remove the cellular plan before confirming the operation.
- If the watch contains important data, use the paired-iPhone method. The watch-only and remote methods can erase the device without creating a new paired-iPhone backup.
Apple Watch data is normally backed up to the paired iPhone when the devices are near each other. An iPhone backup to iCloud or to a computer also includes Apple Watch data. That backup is useful for setting up another watch, but it is not a perfect clone: some information is synchronized separately, and some security-sensitive items are deliberately excluded.
How to unpair Apple Watch using the paired iPhone
This is Apple’s recommended procedure when the watch is being sold, given away, traded in, serviced, or moved from an old iPhone to a new one.
- Keep the Apple Watch and its paired iPhone close together.
- Open the Watch app on the iPhone.
- Tap My Watch.
- Tap All Watches at the top of the screen.
- Tap the info button next to the watch.
- Tap Unpair Apple Watch.
- Tap Unpair [watch name] to confirm.
- If it is a cellular model, choose whether to Keep or Remove the cellular plan.
- Enter the Apple Account password when prompted.
- Tap Unpair.
Apple erases the watch and returns it to its factory setup state. The paired iPhone attempts to create a final Apple Watch backup as part of the unpairing process. Entering the Apple Account password allows Apple to remove Activation Lock, so the watch can be activated with another iPhone.

What you should see afterward
The watch should eventually display the setup or pairing screen rather than the previous owner’s watch face, Home screen, or passcode screen. It is then ready to pair again, sell, give away, or send for service.
If the watch still asks for the former owner’s Apple Account during setup, Activation Lock was not removed. Return to the iCloud.com procedure below rather than handing over the watch.
Do not use the wrong reset command on the iPhone
In the Watch app, My Watch → General → Reset → Erase Apple Watch Content and Settings is an erase command, not the complete ownership-transfer workflow. Apple’s current User Guide distinguishes that erase from Unpair Apple Watch. When another person will use the watch, choose Unpair Apple Watch whenever the paired iPhone is available.

If you have the watch but no longer have the paired iPhone, you can wipe the watch directly. This protects local data, but it leaves the watch associated with the original Apple Account.
- On the watch, open Settings.
- Tap General.
- Tap Reset.
- Tap Erase All Content and Settings.
- Enter the watch passcode if asked.
- On a cellular model, choose whether to keep or remove the cellular plan.
- Tap Erase All.
Important: this is a factory reset, not a true unpair. It does not remove Activation Lock. The original Apple Account and password will still be required before the erased watch can be activated with a different iPhone.

If you are selling, gifting, or trading in the watch
After erasing the watch, remove Activation Lock online:
- Go to icloud.com/find and sign in with the Apple Account linked to the watch.
- Open All Devices and select the Apple Watch.
- Select Erase and follow the prompts. If you already erased the watch locally, complete any erase action that the site still shows as pending or necessary.
- After the erase finishes, select Remove or Remove This Device.
- Confirm the removal.
The sequence matters: erase first, remove second. Erasing protects your data. Removing the device afterward removes Activation Lock and allows the next owner to activate the watch. Apple explains this workflow in its documentation about Activation Lock on Apple Watch.

Use the web method when the paired iPhone is lost, traded in, erased, broken, or no longer accessible; when the watch has already been sold or given away; or when you erased the watch directly and it still asks for your account.
Watch-specific removal procedure
- Visit icloud.com/find.
- Sign in with the Apple Account that is associated with the Apple Watch.
- Choose All Devices, then select the watch.
- Select Erase.
- Follow the prompts and confirm Erase.
- When the erase completes, select the Remove button for the watch.
- Confirm that you want to remove it.
If the watch is offline, the remote erase waits until the watch connects to Wi-Fi or cellular service. Apple may email you when the erase completes. Do not assume that selecting a remote erase means the watch has already been wiped.
Erase is not the same as Remove This Device
These Find My actions have different purposes:
- Erase, then Remove This Device: wipes the watch when it comes online and then removes Activation Lock.
- Remove This Device directly: primarily removes the watch from Find My. For an offline device, Activation Lock can be removed immediately, but the device may remain listed for up to 30 days. If it later comes online while still signed in, it can reappear and Activation Lock can be enabled again.
For a watch that might still contain personal information, use Erase first, Remove second. If the watch is simply lost or stolen, do not remove it merely to make it disappear from your account; use Lost Mode and remote erase instead.
Forgot the Apple Watch passcode? Reset it with the charger
You can erase a passcode-locked watch without knowing the passcode, but this still does not remove Activation Lock.
- Put the Apple Watch on its charger and leave it there throughout the reset.
- Press and hold the side button until the power controls appear.
- Release the side button.
- Press and hold the Digital Crown until the reset or erase screen appears.
- Tap Reset.
- Tap Reset again to confirm.
- Set up the watch again after the erase completes.
On some older watchOS versions, you may see a Power Off slider rather than the newer power-button screen. The controls differ slightly, but the procedure still requires the watch to be on its charger.
This reset erases the watch but leaves Activation Lock enabled. You will need the original Apple Account and password to reactivate it. If the watch is being transferred to somebody else, erase it and then remove it from Find My as described above.
Because this process does not use the paired iPhone’s unpair workflow, assume that unsynced watch data may be lost. Apple’s normal final-backup behavior is tied to unpairing through the paired iPhone.

Cellular plan: keep it or remove it?
Choose the cellular option based on the watch’s next use:
- Keep the plan if you intend to continue using the watch yourself and pair it with the same iPhone setup.
- Remove the plan if the watch is going to another person, another iPhone, a buyer, or a trade-in.
Removing the plan in the Watch app or during an on-watch erase is not necessarily the same as canceling the carrier subscription. You may need to contact the carrier separately to cancel service, stop recurring charges, or resolve a number-sharing arrangement. Carrier fees, transfer rules, supported models, and cancellation requirements vary by carrier and region.
Removing a cellular plan does not imply that the watch hardware is disabled. A compatible cellular Apple Watch can generally continue to be used over Wi-Fi or Bluetooth without an active cellular plan, although the exact features and requirements depend on the model, carrier, and region.
What Apple Watch backup preserves—and what it does not
Apple Watch data is automatically backed up to the paired iPhone when the devices are near each other. Unpairing through the Watch app attempts to make a current backup before erasing the watch. An iPhone backup made to iCloud or a computer includes Apple Watch data.
Apple Watch backups can include:
- App settings.
- Watch-face settings and customizations.
- General system settings.
- Notification settings.
- Home-screen app layout.
- Health and Fitness data.
- Synced music and photos.
- Time-zone information.
A backup does not include everything on the watch. Apple excludes or separately synchronizes:

- Bluetooth pairings.
- Apple Pay credit and debit cards.
- The Apple Watch passcode.
- Some information that already syncs directly to iCloud.
- Messages that sync through Messages in iCloud.
For Health and Fitness data, use an iCloud backup or an encrypted computer backup. Do not promise that an ordinary unencrypted computer backup will preserve all health information.
Erasing the watch removes Apple Pay cards from the watch, but it does not delete the user’s iCloud content. A transit card is not a universal prerequisite to remove manually before unpairing. Apple says that removing a transit card can preserve its remaining balance for transfer to another eligible device signed in to the same Apple Account, subject to the transit system’s support and eligibility.

Family Setup is different
An Apple Watch configured for a family member through Apple Watch For Your Kids does not follow the ordinary paired-iPhone backup path. Apple says that this type of watch backs up directly to the family member’s iCloud account. Family Setup watches can also have different management and cellular arrangements, so confirm the account and plan being used before erasing or transferring one.

Moving Apple Watch to a new iPhone
When the old iPhone is available
Update and back up both iPhones when possible. During setup of the new iPhone, follow Apple’s transfer instructions to move the watch. You can also unpair the watch from the old iPhone using Watch → My Watch → All Watches → info → Unpair Apple Watch, then pair it with the new iPhone and restore the available backup.
If the new iPhone displays Start Pairing instead of continuing the transfer, Apple’s guidance is to unpair the watch and set it up again.
When the old iPhone is gone
- Erase the Apple Watch from the watch itself, or use the passcode-reset procedure if necessary.
- Set up the new iPhone and sign in with the same Apple Account.
- Open the Watch app on the new iPhone.
- Pair the watch.
- Restore the most recent available Apple Watch backup if one is offered.
Changes made after the latest backup may be lost. If no backup is available, the watch must be set up as new. If Activation Lock appears during setup, sign in with the Apple Account that originally associated the watch; erasing alone does not bypass it.

Before handing the watch to a buyer, recipient, or trade-in service, verify every item:
- The watch has been erased and displays the setup or pairing screen.
- It no longer displays the previous owner’s watch face, Home screen, or passcode screen.
- Setup does not request the previous owner’s Apple Account password.
- Activation Lock has been removed.
- The previous owner’s cellular plan has been removed.
- Where necessary, the carrier subscription has also been canceled separately.
- No personal Apple Pay cards or other local content remain on the watch.
If a used Apple Watch shows a passcode lock screen or Home screen, it still needs to be erased. If setup asks for the former owner’s Apple Account, the watch is still Activation Locked and the former owner must complete the iCloud removal process.
Troubleshooting common problems
The Watch app does not show the watch
If the watch is in your possession, use Settings → General → Reset → Erase All Content and Settings. Then sign in to iCloud.com/find, erase the watch if necessary, and select Remove This Device after the erase completes.
If the watch belongs to somebody else, only the previous owner can remove Activation Lock by signing in to the Apple Account associated with it. The buyer cannot remove that lock from the watch alone.

Recover or reset the Apple Account password before attempting to complete the transfer. Without the correct account credentials, the standard unpairing, reactivation, and ownership-removal process cannot be completed.

Apple also provides an Activation Lock support-request option for eligible cases where the owner can provide proof of purchase. Approval is not automatic, and a third-party Activation Lock bypass tool is not an Apple-supported alternative.
The watch is stuck on the pairing animation
If the pairing animation remains on screen for several minutes, Apple’s troubleshooting procedure says to keep the watch in pairing mode, hold the Digital Crown, tap Reset when it appears, and then try pairing again.
The watch was lost or stolen
Do not remove the watch from Find My simply to unpair it. Use Lost Mode and, when appropriate, remote erase. Activation Lock is intended to remain in place so another person cannot activate the watch. Apple’s guidance is available in its instructions for a lost or stolen Apple Watch.
The watch is not listed in Find My
If Find My was not enabled before the watch went missing, Apple says there is no other Apple service that can locate or flag it. If the watch appears under a different Apple Account, the account owner must perform the removal.
You are looking for a physical reset button
Apple Watch has no SIM slot and no physical reset button. Do not probe the speaker, microphone, sensor, or other case openings. All erase and reset operations are performed through the Watch app, the watch’s software controls, or Find My.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I unpair an Apple Watch without the iPhone it was paired with?
You can erase it without that iPhone from Settings → General → Reset → Erase All Content and Settings, but this is not a complete unpair. Activation Lock remains enabled. If someone else will use the watch, erase it and then remove it from Find My on iCloud.com.
Does erasing an Apple Watch remove Activation Lock?
No. An erase performed on the watch removes local content but leaves the watch linked to the original Apple Account. The paired-iPhone Unpair Apple Watch command removes Activation Lock after authentication, or you can erase and then choose Remove This Device in Find My.

The watch is still Activation Locked. The previous owner must sign in to the Apple Account associated with the watch and remove it through the Watch app or iCloud.com/find. The new owner cannot legitimately remove the lock without the previous owner’s cooperation, except through Apple’s separate support process for eligible proof-of-purchase cases.
Will removing the cellular plan cancel my carrier service?
Not necessarily. Removing the plan from Apple’s interface prepares the watch for a different user or setup, but carrier billing and subscription cancellation may require a separate request to the carrier. Policies and fees vary by carrier and region.
The Bottom Line
For a clean transfer, use the paired iPhone’s Watch app and choose Unpair Apple Watch. If the iPhone is unavailable, erase the watch directly, then use Find My to erase it if necessary and select Remove This Device. The watch is not ready for a buyer or recipient until it shows the setup screen and no longer asks for the previous owner’s Apple Account.
