AirPods Max firmware updates install automatically; there is no manual update button or firmware file to download. To prompt an update, connect the headphones to an iPhone, iPad, or Mac over Bluetooth, connect that device to Wi-Fi, plug the headphones into a USB charger or port, and leave them nearby for at least 30 minutes. Then reconnect the headphones and check the firmware version.
Apple’s firmware list at the time of research showed different versions for each AirPods Max model. Check Apple’s current firmware page and match your exact model before comparing versions.
Current AirPods Max firmware versions
AirPods Max firmware is model-specific. Do not assume that one firmware number applies to every version of the headphones.
| Model | Model number | Charging port | Firmware listed by Apple |
|---|---|---|---|
| AirPods Max 2 | A3454 | USB-C | 9A348 |
| AirPods Max 1 with USB-C | A3184 | USB-C | 7E108 |
| AirPods Max 1 with Lightning | A2096 | Lightning | 6F25 |
These are the versions on Apple’s firmware list at the time of research in 2026, not timeless values. If your headphones show a different number, confirm the model and check Apple’s current list.

How to update AirPods Max firmware
- Update the paired Apple device. Install the latest available version of iOS, iPadOS, or macOS on the iPhone, iPad, or Mac you use with the headphones, and make sure Bluetooth is on.
- Connect AirPods Max over Bluetooth. Pair the headphones with that Apple device.
- Connect the Apple device to Wi-Fi. Apple delivers firmware automatically while the headphones are charging and within Bluetooth range of an iPhone, iPad, or Mac connected to Wi-Fi.
- Connect AirPods Max to power. Plug a charging cable into the bottom of the right earphone and connect the other end to a USB charger or port.
- Wait at least 30 minutes. Keep the headphones within Bluetooth range of the Apple device while they charge. Apple does not provide a user-facing progress indicator or guaranteed completion time.
- Reconnect and verify the version. Reconnect AirPods Max to the iPhone, iPad, or Mac, then check the firmware number using the steps below.
You do not need to select a package, approve an installation prompt, or start the update from a settings menu. Apple’s consumer procedure is automatic.
Use the correct charging cable
AirPods Max with USB-C can use a USB-C-to-USB-C or USB-C-to-USB cable. For AirPods Max with Lightning, use a USB-C-to-Lightning or USB-to-Lightning cable. Check the headphone port before choosing a cable; a replacement is only needed if your cable is missing, damaged, or you need a spare.
AirPods Max can remain inside the Smart Case while charging if the case’s port cutout is aligned with the headphone’s charging port. The Smart Case is not a separate firmware-update mechanism.

How to check the AirPods Max firmware version
On an iPhone or iPad
- Open Settings.
- Tap Bluetooth.
- Find AirPods Max in the device list and tap the Info button next to them.
- Scroll to the About section.
- Read the value beside Firmware Version.
Compare that number with the entry for your exact AirPods Max model, not with a version listed for a different charging-port or generation variant.
On a Mac
- Choose Apple menu > System Settings.
- Select Bluetooth.
- Find AirPods Max and select the Info button beside them.
- Locate the firmware version in the headphones’ information panel.
How to identify your AirPods Max model
The easiest distinction between the two first-generation versions is the charging port: USB-C means AirPods Max 1 with USB-C, while Lightning means AirPods Max 1 with Lightning. AirPods Max 2 also uses USB-C, so the port alone does not distinguish it from the first-generation USB-C model.
To find the model number, use the information panel for the connected headphones on an iPhone, iPad, or Mac, or look behind the cushion on the left ear cup. The relevant model numbers are:

What to do if AirPods Max will not update
If the version does not change, repeat Apple’s automatic procedure: connect the headphones to an Apple device over Bluetooth, connect that device to Wi-Fi, charge the headphones, and leave them within Bluetooth range for at least 30 minutes. Apple’s stated next troubleshooting step is to reset AirPods Max and try the update procedure again.

Get help without an Apple device
If you do not have an iPhone, iPad, or Mac nearby, Apple says you can arrange an appointment at an Apple Store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider to update the firmware.
What will not manually update the firmware
- There is no consumer-facing Update Firmware button for AirPods Max.
- You cannot select and install an AirPods Max firmware file manually.
- Apple does not document a Windows utility or computer-only method for installing AirPods Max firmware.
- Charging alone does not guarantee an update; the headphones also need to be within Bluetooth range of a paired Apple device connected to Wi-Fi.
A firmware update is not a guaranteed cure for every connection, battery, noise-control, or charging problem. If a particular fault remains after the update, troubleshoot that fault separately or seek service.

Can AirPods Max firmware be updated with a Windows PC?
Apple’s documented consumer process uses a paired iPhone, iPad, or Mac. Apple does not document a Windows utility or computer-only method for installing the firmware. If you have no Apple device, contact an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider.
How long should an AirPods Max firmware update take?
Leave the headphones charging within Bluetooth range of the paired Apple device for at least 30 minutes. Apple does not give a guaranteed completion time or provide a user-facing progress indicator.
Why does my firmware version not match the number I found online?
Check the model number and charging port first. AirPods Max 2, AirPods Max 1 with USB-C, and AirPods Max 1 with Lightning have separate firmware listings. Also check Apple’s current firmware list because versions can change.
Can AirPods Max stay in the Smart Case while updating?
Yes, they can remain in the Smart Case while charging if the case’s port cutout is aligned with the charging port. The case is not an update tool; the headphones still need to be within Bluetooth range of a paired Apple device connected to Wi-Fi.
The Bottom Line
To update AirPods Max, connect them over Bluetooth to an iPhone, iPad, or Mac connected to Wi-Fi, plug them into a USB charger or port, and leave them nearby for at least 30 minutes. Then verify the firmware against the correct model listing on Apple’s current firmware page. If the version still does not change, reset the headphones and retry, or arrange service through Apple.
