Compatible Galaxy Watches can use voice commands to control supported adidas Running workout actions through Wear OS and Google’s assistant platform. This is not a new Samsung-exclusive feature: Google described the adidas Running integration on April 18, 2023, using Assistant App Actions. Whether it works for you depends on your watch’s operating system, assistant availability, and whether you want to track with or without your phone.
What the adidas Running integration does
The integration connects three pieces: adidas Running records the activity and keeps it with your adidas account; its Wear OS app provides the watch interface; and Google Assistant App Actions can translate spoken requests into supported workout controls. Google’s April 18, 2023 announcement describes actions to start, pause, resume, and stop an exercise. The technical intent names are START_EXERCISE, PAUSE_EXERCISE, RESUME_EXERCISE, and STOP_EXERCISE; those names are for developers, not required spoken phrases.
This is an adidas Running and Wear OS integration, not a direct Samsung Health integration or an Adidas-branded Galaxy Watch. Samsung lists adidas Running among fitness apps for Wear OS Galaxy Watches, and Google lists it among Wear OS apps (Samsung; Wear OS).
Check whether your watch and setup are compatible
| Check | What it means |
|---|---|
| Operating system | Look for a Wear OS Galaxy Watch. Older Tizen-based models, including many Galaxy Watch Active and Galaxy Watch3-era watches, are not equivalent to current Wear OS watches. |
| Assistant availability | Google says Assistant is available on select watches running Wear OS 3.0 or later; Gemini is available on select watches running Wear OS 4.0 or later. Availability depends on device, country, region, and language. Google says Assistant is no longer supported on Wear OS 2.x. Check the current Google watch-assistant requirements. |
| GPS for phone-free recording | adidas says standalone watch tracking requires integrated GPS. A watch without its own GPS may need the phone for location and should not be assumed to support a phone-free run. |
| Apps and accounts | Install adidas Running on both watch and paired phone, and sign in to the phone app before setup. The watch must be paired and online for setup and assistant functions. |
| Advanced adidas features | Training Plans, Interval Training, and Voice Coach are documented as second-screen features, which means using the phone with the watch. |
Google’s current documentation names both Assistant and Gemini, but the original adidas integration announcement specifically describes Assistant App Actions. Seeing Gemini on a watch does not by itself establish that every adidas voice action works identically on that watch. Availability and behavior can also vary by language and region.

Install adidas Running and set up the assistant
- On the Galaxy Watch, open the app menu, launch Google Play Store, search for adidas Running, then install or update it. Use the watch’s Play Store rather than searching only from the phone. Adidas’s Wear OS setup guidance describes installing the watch app from Google Play.
- Install adidas Running on the paired phone, open it, and sign in to the adidas account you intend to use. Keep the watch paired with the phone while setup completes.
- Open adidas Running on the watch and grant the requested activity, location, and sensor permissions. Exact prompts vary with app, Android, Wear OS, and Samsung software versions.
- In the watch app menu, select Google Assistant or Gemini, if offered, and follow the phone prompts to finish setup. Google’s setup page gives this general path: open the assistant app on the watch and complete the instructions on the paired phone.
- For hands-free activation, enable “Hey Google” detection if the setting is available. Google documents the path as swipe down from the watch face, open Settings, select Google, then Digital Assistant, and adjust Hey Google Detection. Labels can differ as software changes.
Test the assistant before relying on it during a run. If the watch’s Play Store does not show adidas Running, check the watch’s Wear OS version, connection, Google account, and current app compatibility rather than assuming every Galaxy Watch is supported.
Start and control a workout by voice
Once the assistant and app are set up, natural-language examples to try include “Hey Google, start a run with adidas Running,” “Hey Google, pause my workout,” “Hey Google, resume my workout,” and “Hey Google, stop my workout.” These are examples, not guaranteed exact phrases: recognition and app behavior vary by assistant, language, region, software, and network conditions.

For an initial test, open adidas Running on the watch, choose an activity, and start it manually. For an outdoor activity, wait for GPS to acquire a signal. Once recording is underway, try pause and resume by voice and confirm the watch actually changed state. A request to start a run may open the app or start an activity depending on the software configuration; do not assume it has begun recording until the watch shows that it has.
If voice control does not work, use the watch screen: open adidas Running and tap its pause control; to end the activity, swipe up and select Stop, following adidas’s documented watch controls. Confirm the saved summary before leaving the app. For workout timing where a missed command matters, the on-screen control is the safer fallback.

Choose standalone or second-screen mode
Standalone mode: record from the watch
Adidas documents standalone tracking for Wear OS watches with integrated GPS. This is the option for leaving the phone behind and recording location from the watch. “Standalone” does not mean every adidas feature or assistant action is available offline: setup, account functions, and voice assistance can depend on connectivity, while advanced adidas features listed below still require the phone.
Second-screen mode: use the watch as a companion
In second-screen mode, start the activity in adidas Running on the phone; the watch serves as a companion display and control surface. Adidas says the activity can be finished on either the phone or watch. Its documented second-screen-only features are Training Plans, Interval Training, and Voice Coach. If those matter to your run, take the phone.

What the watch records and when activities sync
Adidas documentation for Wear OS lists duration, distance, and heart rate among the watch metrics. Activity summaries can include route, duration, distance, calories burned, and other recorded workout information. The watch can use its built-in heart-rate sensor or a compatible Bluetooth Low Energy heart-rate belt; external-sensor behavior depends on the belt, pairing, watch, and app support.
Adidas says Wear OS activities upload to the adidas account when the watch connects to Wi-Fi, so do not assume every activity appears immediately. If an activity has not appeared, confirm it was saved, check that the watch is online, and make sure the watch app is using the same adidas account as the phone app. See adidas’s regional Wear OS activity guidance.

What this does—and does not—mean for Samsung Health
Using adidas Running on a Galaxy Watch does not establish that all adidas metrics automatically transfer into Samsung Health, or that Samsung Health data mirrors back to adidas Running. Google’s developer announcement discusses Health Services and Health Connect APIs, but that is not proof of complete, two-way transfer for every data type. Treat cross-service syncing as a separate compatibility question and verify the specific apps and data you need.
Troubleshoot common problems
adidas Running appears on the phone but not the watch
- Open Google Play Store directly on the watch and search for the exact app name.
- Confirm the watch is paired, online, signed in to Google, and running a supported Wear OS version.
- Update the watch and Play Store components, then restart the watch and phone if the listing does not refresh.
- App availability can vary by device and region; check adidas’s current compatibility guidance.
The assistant is missing or a voice command does the wrong thing
- Check the watch’s Wear OS version, model, language, and region against Google’s assistant support information; check whether the watch offers Gemini instead.
- Say “adidas Running” explicitly if multiple fitness apps are installed, and check the assistant’s response rather than assuming the workout started.
- Open adidas Running manually and begin recording, then retry pause or resume. If it still fails, use the watch controls.
- Voice requests depend on microphone conditions, network access, account configuration, app availability, and recognition; they are not guaranteed in every setting.
Standalone GPS recording does not work
- Confirm the watch has integrated GPS, that adidas Running has location permission, and that the watch has acquired a GPS signal.
- Check whether the watch is depending on the phone for location and whether battery-saving settings are restricting location or background activity.
An activity has not synced
- Make sure the activity was saved rather than abandoned or force-closed.
- Reconnect the watch to Wi-Fi or the paired phone, confirm the same adidas account is in use, and allow the app to upload.
- Check for app updates and any battery restrictions that may prevent background activity.
Training Plans, intervals, or Voice Coach are unavailable
This is consistent with adidas’s documented limits: those features require second-screen mode with the phone, rather than standalone watch use.
Quick Recap
When another running app may fit better
- Samsung Health: Consider it if you want to stay within Samsung’s health ecosystem and use first-party Galaxy Watch integration. Samsung lists it alongside third-party fitness apps for Wear OS watches; it does not provide the same adidas account history by default.
- Strava: Consider it if social sharing, route history, and cross-platform activity management are more important than adidas-specific training content. Samsung also lists Strava for Wear OS Galaxy Watches.
- Google Fit or Health Connect: These may help with Android health-data interoperability, but support for APIs does not guarantee every data type transfers in every direction.
- Dedicated running watches: A device from a specialist running-watch brand may better suit priorities such as long battery life, structured training, navigation, and detailed analytics. It is not the right choice if having the adidas Running app and Google’s assistant on the wrist is essential.
