Turn it on under Clock settings, choose a tap pattern, then touch and hold the watch face with two fingers. The instructions below follow Apple’s watchOS 26 guide; menus may differ on older software.
Turn on Taptic Time
Taptic Time is an on-demand way to read the time using the watch’s haptic feedback. It is not a notification, alarm, or timer, and enabling ordinary notification haptics alone does not enable it. Apple describes it as a discreet option for checking the time without looking at the screen or having the watch speak.
On Apple Watch
- Open Settings.
- Tap Clock.
- Scroll down and tap Taptic Time.
- Turn on Taptic Time, then select Digits, Terse, or Morse Code.
On iPhone
Open the Apple Watch app and go to My Watch → Clock → Taptic Time. Apple says settings can be changed on either device and synchronized; see its guide to changing Apple Watch settings.
Ask the watch for the time
- Return to the watch face.
- Place two fingers on the face and hold them there. A brief tap is not the gesture.
- Feel the sequence through to its end: the first group represents the hour, followed by the minutes.
The watch should be worn with its back in contact with your skin. Apple recommends a snug but comfortable fit for reliable haptic feedback; a loose band or fabric between the watch and wrist can make taps harder to notice. See Apple’s fit guidance.

Choose a tap pattern
| Mode | What it conveys | Best suited to | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Digits | Exact hour and minute using groups of 10 and remaining units | Precise time checks | Can require more taps to count |
| Terse | Hour and a 15-minute interval | Quick, approximate orientation | Does not give the exact minute |
| Morse Code | Each digit is represented by Morse-code tap patterns | People already familiar with Morse | Requires knowing the code |
Apple documents these options but does not establish that Morse Code is faster than the others. For most people who need an exact time, Digits is the straightforward choice; use Terse when a quarter-hour range is enough.
Decode the taps
Digits: count tens, then the remainder
In Digits mode, a long tap represents a group of 10 hours or minutes, and a short tap represents each remaining hour or minute. Apple’s example is 21:34 (9:34 p.m.): two long taps and one short tap communicate 21 for the hour; three long taps and four short taps communicate 34 minutes. This is Apple’s documented example, so it avoids assumptions about how every hour is represented in other cases.

Terse: read an interval, not an exact minute
In Terse mode, a long tap represents five hours, with short taps for remaining hours. Minutes are given in 15-minute increments. Apple’s example for a time from 21:30 to 21:44 (9:30–9:44 p.m.) is four long taps and one short tap for 21 hours, followed by two long taps for the 30-minute point. That minute cue places the time in the stated range rather than identifying the exact minute.
Morse Code: use the digit code
Morse Code mode encodes each time digit as a Morse-code tap pattern. Choose it if you already know Morse or are comfortable learning it; Apple’s description does not promise a speed or accuracy advantage over Digits.

If Taptic Time does not work
- Check the gesture and screen. Start from the watch face and hold two fingers on it; do not try the gesture from the Settings screen.
- Confirm the feature is on. Check Settings → Clock → Taptic Time.
- Check the setting below Speak Time. Apple says to make sure Control With Silent Mode is selected if Taptic Time cannot be activated. This does not mean Silent Mode itself must always be on.
- Improve skin contact. Adjust the band so the back of the watch sits against skin, comfortably and securely.
- Try a stronger haptic setting if the taps feel faint. Under Settings → Sounds & Haptics → Haptics, Apple documents Default, Prominent, and Off. Prominent may make haptic feedback easier to notice, but Apple documents this as an intensity control, not as a change to Taptic Time’s code. See Apple’s volume and haptics guide.
- Restart the watch if the gesture, setting, and fit are correct but it still gives no response. If ordinary haptic alerts also fail, contact Apple Support about service.
Taptic Time, Speak Time, and Chimes are different
| Feature | Output | How it starts | When it fits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Taptic Time | Wrist taps | Two-finger hold on the watch face | On-demand, discreet time checks |
| Speak Time | Spoken time | Enable under Settings → Clock → Speak Time, then hold two fingers on the face | When audio is useful and acceptable |
| Chimes | Recurring audible cue | Set an interval under Settings → Accessibility → Chimes | Scheduled reminders rather than a user-requested time reading |
Apple’s Chimes guidance also lists configuration in the iPhone’s Apple Watch app → My Watch → Accessibility → Chimes, with hourly, every-30-minute, or every-15-minute schedules and Birds or Bells sounds. See Apple’s accessibility guidance. For a visual check, use the watch face; Always On is available only on compatible models.
