To time a segment with the Casio MDV106C, start with the watch running and the screw-lock crown fully tightened. Casio lists the MDV106C-1AV as 200-meter water resistant, but Casio’s own guidance distinguishes ordinary “200M Water Resistance” from watches marked “DIVER’S WATCH 200M.” Verify the actual marking on your watch and follow your dive computer, tables, training and operator rules before scuba use.
What does the MDV106C rotating bezel do?
The rotating bezel gives you a movable zero point for measuring elapsed minutes. You place the bezel’s ▼ marker at the minute hand when an activity starts, then use the bezel scale under the advancing minute hand as a running minute counter. The watch itself continues to show normal time; the bezel simply makes the start point easy to read.

Pre-entry checklist
- Confirm that the seconds hand is moving and the watch is running.
- Press the crown in and screw it fully down until the screw-lock crown is secure.
- Check that the case back and crown have not been left loose after setting the time.
- Turn the bezel only while you can clearly see the ▼ marker and minute hand.
- Plan the dive with the required dive computer, tables, training and operator procedures; the bezel does not calculate depth or decompression.
The product page lists both a screw-lock crown and a screw-lock back. Those construction details support water resistance when properly closed, but they do not remove the need to inspect the watch and follow the manufacturer’s care guidance.
How do I set the bezel when a timed segment starts?
Set the bezel at the exact moment you want to begin counting. Casio’s operation guide describes the method as aligning the bezel’s ▼ mark with the minute hand, after which you can tell how much time has elapsed since the alignment.
- Choose the start instant. Decide what event starts the interval: for example, the beginning of a planned exercise or a dive segment. Have the watch visible and the crown already locked.
- Find the minute hand. Use the long hand that completes one revolution in an hour. Do not use the seconds hand or the hour hand for this bezel method.
- Rotate counter-clockwise. Turn the bezel in its intended direction until the ▼/zero marker sits exactly opposite the tip of the minute hand. If the hand is between minute marks, place the marker as precisely as the graduations allow.
- Start the interval. Once the marker is aligned, leave the crown closed and begin the planned activity.
- Read the scale later. Follow the minute hand to the number or index on the bezel. That value represents minutes elapsed from the alignment point, provided the bezel has not moved.
Do not unscrew the crown to make a correction in the water. If the alignment was wrong, use your approved timing procedure and correct the watch only after leaving the water and drying the case.
How do I read elapsed minutes on the unidirectional bezel?
Read the bezel as a relative scale, not as a second clock. The ▼ mark is your zero; the minute hand’s later position is the elapsed-minute value. The bezel’s markings are arranged around the dial so that the hand points to increasing elapsed time as it advances.
Worked example
Suppose the minute hand is at 10 minutes past the hour when the timed segment begins. Rotate the bezel’s ▼ marker to that hand position. When the minute hand later points to the bezel marking 25, subtract the starting reference from the later reading: 25 minus 10 equals 15 minutes elapsed. This is an explanation of how to interpret the scale, not a field-test result.

Reading the first hour
For intervals shorter than 60 minutes, read the number directly under the minute hand. At 5, 15, 30 or 45, the interpretation is straightforward. At positions between numbered marks, use the smaller graduation lines to estimate the intervening minute; the bezel remains a minute-scale reference, not a seconds timer.

Intervals longer than one revolution
After 60 minutes the minute hand returns to the 12 o’clock position, so a single bezel revolution cannot distinguish one hour from two hours. If your plan exceeds one hour, record the start time separately and use the bezel only for the current hour-sized segment. Never infer total dive time from a bezel reading after more than one full revolution.
Why is the MDV106C bezel anti-reverse?
An anti-reverse bezel is designed to turn in one direction so an accidental knock cannot increase the time shown as available. If it shifts, the marker moves toward a reading that indicates less remaining allowance. This safety logic is useful for timing, but it does not monitor the conditions that make a dive safe.
Check the marker before relying on a reading. If the bezel has moved from its intended position, treat the original timing as compromised rather than trying to reconstruct it from the new alignment. Use your dive computer or the timing method required by your training and operator.
Can I scuba dive with the Casio MDV106C?
Do not decide that from the “200M” number alone. Casio’s water-resistance guidance says only watches marked “DIVER’S WATCH 200M” can be worn while scuba diving with air tanks. It separately says that ordinary watches marked “200M Water Resistance” are not for scuba diving.

Casio’s MDV106C-1AV product information lists 200-meter water resistance, but the supplied product information does not establish that the watch carries the exact “DIVER’S WATCH 200M” designation. Inspect the marking on your particular watch and its documentation. If that designation is absent or unclear, do not treat the watch as scuba-certified on the basis of the depth number; ask the manufacturer or a qualified service provider before using it in a scuba context.

How does a bezel timer compare with a dive computer or separate timer?
A bezel answers one narrow question: how many minutes have passed since you aligned the marker. A dive computer combines elapsed time with depth and decompression calculations; a separate timer may provide alarms or other functions but still cannot automatically supply a computer’s dive model unless it is specifically designed and approved for that purpose.

What mistakes cause incorrect bezel timing?
Aligning the wrong hand
The bezel method uses the minute hand. Aligning the ▼ marker with the hour hand produces an invalid elapsed-minute reference, and aligning it with the seconds hand attempts to use a scale that is not designed for seconds.
Turning the bezel in the wrong direction
Casio’s operation method is counter-clockwise alignment. Do not force the bezel clockwise or treat two-way rotation as normal operation. If it will not move in the intended direction, stop and have the watch inspected rather than applying excessive force.
Leaving the crown unscrewed
An unscrewed screw-lock crown defeats the water-resistance condition described by Casio. Set the time on land, press the crown in, screw it down fully and check it before exposure to water.

The depth number is not the designation Casio uses for air-tank scuba permission. Check for the exact “DIVER’S WATCH 200M” marking and follow the manufacturer’s written guidance.
Using the bezel as a complete dive instrument
No bezel position can reveal depth, pressure, ascent rate or decompression status. Keep the required computer, gauges, tables and team procedures as the controlling system.

Forgetting the one-hour limit of a single revolution
Once the minute hand circles the dial, the same bezel position can represent another hour. For longer activities, note the actual start time and reset or record each segment according to your approved procedure.
How should I care for the watch after timing?
Rinse and dry the watch according to Casio’s care instructions for your model, and do not operate the crown while it is wet. Have seals, the screw-lock crown and the case back checked by an authorized service provider at the interval Casio recommends for your region and use; water resistance is not a permanent condition.
