Use the upper chronograph pusher to start and stop timing, and the lower pusher to reset the stopped chronograph to zero. To use the fixed tachymeter, time an object over exactly 1 kilometre or 1 mile; when you stop the chronograph, the central seconds hand indicates the average speed in kilometres per hour or miles per hour. The button labels, subdial ranges and 1/10-second display depend on your Indy 500 reference, so identify the reference engraved on the case or printed on the warranty card before following movement-specific instructions.
What does the chronograph on a TAG Heuer Indy 500 watch do?
A chronograph is a stopwatch built into the watch. It measures elapsed time independently of the regular time display. On the Calibre 16 layout described in TAG Heuer’s instruction manual, the central hand records chronograph seconds, while separate subdials record elapsed minutes and hours. The upper pusher is labelled A for start and stop; the lower pusher is labelled B for zero reset.

TAG Heuer has issued several references with different movements and dial layouts. A 1/10-second counter or a particular subdial range may therefore appear on one model and not another. Treat the A/B sequence below as the Calibre 16 procedure, and verify your reference-specific guide when the dial does not match.
Which parts should I identify before timing?
| Part | Calibre 16 function | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Upper chronograph pusher (A) | Starts and stops the stopwatch | Press once to begin; press again to pause or finish |
| Lower chronograph pusher (B) | Returns stopped chronograph hands to zero | Press only after timing has been stopped |
| Central seconds hand | Chronograph seconds counter | Read elapsed seconds, or read the tachymeter after a timed distance |
| Minute counter subdial | Elapsed chronograph minutes | Read together with the central hand |
| Hour counter subdial | Elapsed chronograph hours | Read when an event lasts longer than one hour |
| Crown | Sets the normal time and calendar indications | Return it to its normal position after setting; screw it down if your reference uses a screw-down crown |
Some Indy 500 dials add a 1/10-second indication, a date window or differently arranged counters. Those features do not change the basic rule: A controls start/stop and B performs a stopped reset when the controls are assigned as in the Calibre 16 guide.

How do I identify the correct Indy 500 reference and manual?
Turn the watch over and look for the engraved reference on the case, then compare it with the warranty card or purchase documents. Use that complete code when searching TAG Heuer’s service pages or asking Customer Care for a guide. Do not choose a manual solely because the watch says “Indy 500”; multiple editions share that name.
Known 43 mm quartz references
| Reference | Movement and functions stated by TAG Heuer | Case and resistance | Other published details |
|---|---|---|---|
| CAZ101AR.BA0842 (2022 Formula 1 x Indy 500) | Quartz chronograph; central chronograph seconds; 1/10-second function; 30-minute counter; date | 43 mm case; 200 m water resistance | Fixed tachymeter bezel; edition limited to 500 pieces |
| CAZ101AW.BA0842 | Quartz chronograph; 1/10-second, seconds and 30-minute-counter functions; date | 43 mm case; water-resistance rating not stated in the cited specification | Fixed bezel; bezel material and detailed pusher layout not stated in the cited specification |
The table describes only the published specifications for these references. It does not establish that every Indy 500 edition has the same movement, water resistance, bezel construction or counter ranges. If your reference is different, follow its own guide rather than transferring subdial instructions from either model above.

How do I perform a single timing?
Single timing measures one continuous event, such as a lap, a cooking interval or the duration of a phone call. Make sure the hands are at zero before you begin.
- Check the starting state. The chronograph must be stopped. If a chronograph hand is not aligned with its zero marker, press B to reset it. If B does nothing, confirm that timing is stopped; a running chronograph should be stopped with A first.
- Start at the event’s beginning. Press A once as the event starts. The central chronograph seconds hand begins moving and the appropriate counter records elapsed time.
- Stop at the event’s end. Press A a second time. Read the central seconds hand and the minute and hour counters together. On a model with a 1/10-second display, read that indication according to the markings on your particular dial.
- Record the result. Note the elapsed value before resetting if you need to preserve it for a log or calculation.
- Reset. With timing stopped, press B. The chronograph hands return to their zero positions and are ready for the next measurement.
Presses should be deliberate rather than repeated rapidly. A quick second press of A is a stop command, not a reset command; B is the control that clears the displayed elapsed time.
How do I add separate intervals with cumulative timing?
Cumulative timing lets you pause the stopwatch while an activity is interrupted, then continue without losing the time already measured. The chronograph adds each run segment.

- Press A to start the first interval.
- Press A again to stop and hold the first interval.
- When the next interval begins, press A once more to resume timing.
- Press A again when that interval ends. Repeat the start/stop pair for additional segments.
- Read the combined elapsed time from the counters, then press B once timing is stopped to return the hands to zero.
Do not press B between intervals: doing so clears the accumulated display and forces you to begin a new measurement.
How do I reset chronograph hands that are not at zero?
Stop the chronograph with A, then press B. If a hand still does not align with its marker, the watch may require a reference-specific hand-alignment procedure rather than an ordinary reset. The exact correction sequence depends on the movement and is not established for every Indy 500 edition in the Calibre 16 guide.
Never force a pusher or repeatedly press controls while the movement is running abnormally. Confirm the reference and obtain its user guide from TAG Heuer’s service resources; for older models, TAG Heuer says to contact Customer Care when a guide is not available online.
How do I read elapsed minutes, hours and tenths?
Read the central chronograph seconds hand first, then use the minute and hour counters to determine how many complete revolutions or longer intervals have passed. The Calibre 16 manual describes separate 30-minute and 12-hour counters. Other Indy 500 movements can use different ranges, so use the printed scale on your own subdials.
A 1/10-second feature is not necessarily displayed by the same hand or subdial on every reference. On the 2022 CAZ101AR.BA0842 specification, TAG Heuer lists a 1/10-second function alongside the seconds and 30-minute counter, but the cited specification does not define every dial-hand interaction. Read the markings and reference-specific instructions instead of assuming that the central hand itself always shows tenths.

How do I use the tachymeter on a TAG Heuer Indy 500?
The tachymeter is the fixed scale printed around the bezel. It converts the time required to travel a known distance into an average speed. TAG Heuer’s manual defines the standard procedure for a distance of 1 kilometre or 1 mile and specifies speeds above 60 km/h or 60 mph.
- Choose the distance and unit. Use a measured 1 km or 1 mile course. The unit you choose determines whether the reading is interpreted as km/h or mph.
- Set the chronograph. Stop it and press B so the chronograph hands are at zero.
- Start at the marker. Press A exactly when the object crosses the starting point.
- Stop at the finish. Press A again when it reaches the end of the measured kilometre or mile.
- Read the scale. The central seconds hand points to a number on the tachymeter. Interpret that number as the object’s average speed in the selected unit per hour.
- Reset after recording. Once the result is noted, press B while the chronograph is stopped.
“The tachymeter enables you to measure your average speed over a distance of 1 km or 1 mile (for speeds in excess of 60 km/h or 60 mph).”
“To start the timing, press push button A. When you stop the timing by pressing push button A again, the seconds hand indicates a number on the tachymeter scale. This is your average speed in km/h or mph.”
What does a tachymeter reading of 120 mean?
If the timed distance is one mile and the elapsed time is 30 seconds, the central hand points to 120 on a standard tachymeter scale. That means an average speed of 120 miles per hour over that mile. For a one-kilometre course, the same numerical reading represents 120 kilometres per hour.
The calculation follows the relationship between distance, elapsed time and an hourly rate: one unit of distance completed in 30 seconds would be completed 120 times in an hour. The example is a mathematical illustration of the scale, not a measurement test of a particular watch.

What can the tachymeter measure, and what can it not measure?
- It measures an average. The result covers the entire selected kilometre or mile, so acceleration, braking and changes in pace are included in one number.
- It does not show instantaneous speed. The hand cannot tell you the speed at a particular moment midway through the course.
- It requires a known distance. Without a measured 1 km or 1 mile, the printed value has no direct speed meaning.
- It has a stated operating range. The manual specifies the 1 km/1 mile method for speeds above 60 km/h or 60 mph. Lower-speed events may fall outside the useful portion of a conventional scale.
- It is not an adjustable timing marker. The Indy 500 bezel described here is fixed. You do not rotate it to line up with a start point.
For safe everyday use, time a controlled course rather than attempting to operate the pushers while driving. A passenger or a stationary test setup avoids distracting the driver and produces cleaner start and finish presses.
What mistakes most often cause a wrong result?
| Symptom | Likely cause | Correction |
|---|---|---|
| The tachymeter number seems unrelated to the speed | The distance was not exactly 1 km or 1 mile, or the unit was interpreted incorrectly | Measure the course accurately and label the result km/h or mph before comparing it with a speedometer |
| The hands will not reset | The chronograph is still running | Press A to stop, then press B |
| The wrong subdial is being read | The watch uses a different movement or layout from the Calibre 16 diagram | Match the case reference to its guide and follow the printed scales |
| A reset erased a cumulative result | B was pressed between intervals | Use A for every pause and resume; use B only after the final stop |
| Water resistance may be compromised after setting | The crown was left pulled out or not screwed down on a screw-down model | Push the crown fully home and screw it down when the design requires it |
How should I protect water resistance after using the controls?
Chronograph operation does not replace the normal crown-sealing procedure. After setting the time or date, return the crown to its normal position. If your reference has a screw-down crown, screw it down fully to preserve the stated water resistance. Do not operate the crown underwater, and treat any uncertainty about crown engagement as a reason to have the seals checked before immersion.
The 2022 CAZ101AR.BA0842 brochure lists 200 m water resistance, but that figure belongs to that identified reference and should not automatically be applied to every Indy 500 watch. Water resistance is a condition of the complete case, crown and seals; it is not a promise that a chronograph can be operated at any depth.
Which Indy 500 specifications are confirmed for comparison?

Where can I get a manual if my watch is older?
For recent models, TAG Heuer says the user guide is available from the watch’s service page. For older models, the company directs owners to its Customer Care Team. Give Customer Care the complete case reference and, if possible, a clear photograph of the dial and case back so the correct movement guide can be identified.

A guide is especially important when the subdial arrangement differs from the Calibre 16 diagram, when the chronograph includes a 1/10-second display, or when the crown and pusher construction is unfamiliar. Do not infer a hand-correction sequence from a different Indy 500 reference.
What should I remember when using the watch?
- Identify the exact reference before applying movement-specific instructions.
- Use A to start and stop, and B to reset only after stopping.
- For a tachymeter result, time a known 1 km or 1 mile distance and read average speed in the matching unit.
- Keep in mind that the tachymeter is fixed and does not show instantaneous speed.
- Return the crown to its normal position and screw it down when required by the case design.
- When the dial does not match the Calibre 16 layout, obtain the reference-specific guide rather than guessing.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use the tachymeter for a distance other than one kilometre or one mile?
The printed scale is calibrated for the 1 km or 1 mile method described in the manual. A different distance requires a separate conversion, so the number under the seconds hand cannot be read directly as km/h or mph without doing that calculation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhy does my Indy 500 have a different number of subdials from the instructions?
TAG Heuer has produced multiple Indy 500 references and movements. Compare the engraved reference with the warranty card and obtain the matching guide; do not assume that a Calibre 16 diagram describes your watch.
Is the tachymeter bezel on an Indy 500 adjustable?
The fixed tachymeter bezel described for these references is printed in place. It is not designed to rotate as a countdown or elapsed-time bezel.
Can I press the reset pusher while the chronograph is running?
No. Stop the chronograph with the start/stop pusher first, then use the reset pusher. Pressing reset during operation can interrupt the intended timing sequence and is contrary to the manual’s procedure.
How do I find a guide for an older TAG Heuer chronograph?
TAG Heuer states that recent-model guides are on the watch’s service page. For older watches, contact Customer Care with the complete reference so the appropriate documentation can be supplied.
