Apple Watch widgets live in the Smart Stack, a panel you open from the watch face. Turn the Digital Crown upward or swipe up, scroll to a widget, and tap it to open its app or feature. To add or organize widgets, scroll to the bottom of the stack and tap Edit.
What Apple Watch widgets are
Widgets are glanceable information or shortcuts collected in the Smart Stack. The stack can surface items based on context such as time of day, location, activity, or an ongoing event. Its order may therefore feel dynamic rather than like a fixed grid. Apple describes these features in its watchOS 26 Smart Stack guide.
Live Activities can also appear at the top of the stack while something is in progress, such as a workout, timer, or music playback. They are ongoing activity views, not simply another name for ordinary widgets.
Apple Watch widgets are not the same as iPhone widgets, which appear on iPhone surfaces such as the Home Screen and Lock Screen. On Apple Watch, the Smart Stack is the place to find widgets; Apple’s iPhone widget guide describes that separate system.

How to open the Smart Stack
- Start at the watch face.
- Turn the Digital Crown upward, or swipe up from the bottom of the display.
- Scroll through the Smart Stack to find the widget you want.
- Tap the widget to open its associated app or feature.
Double Tap can also open the Smart Stack where the gesture is supported and available. It is an alternative, not a universal requirement. If swiping does not bring up the stack, use the Digital Crown.
How to use a widget
A widget gives you a quick view or shortcut; tapping it typically opens the associated app for fuller information or controls. For example, a weather widget can show a quick status before you open Weather. What a particular widget displays and how it responds to a tap depend on that widget.
Scroll to the bottom of the Smart Stack for access to Music, Workouts, or Messages. A Home widget can provide access to a selected accessory when the relevant Apple Home setup and accessory are available; Apple explains its Home setup in the Apple Watch Home guide.
How to add a widget
- Open the Smart Stack from the watch face.
- Scroll to the bottom and tap Edit.
- Tap Add Widget.
- Select the widget you want. An app may offer more than one.
- If an expand or configuration control appears, choose any available options.
- Tap Done.
The choices depend on the apps and widgets available on your watch; not every app offers a widget.

How to remove a widget
- Open the Smart Stack, scroll to the bottom, and tap Edit.
- Tap the remove or delete control on the widget you want to take out.
- Tap Done.
This removes the widget from the Smart Stack; it does not, by itself, uninstall the associated app.
How to pin and reorder widgets
Pin a widget
- Open the Smart Stack, scroll to the bottom, and tap Edit.
- Tap the Pin control on the right side of the widget.
- Tap Done.
Pinning keeps a widget in a fixed position instead of leaving it entirely to contextual ordering. It is useful for information you want to find in a predictable place.
Reorder pinned widgets
- In the Smart Stack, tap Edit at the bottom.
- Touch and hold a pinned widget, then drag it to the position you want.
- Tap Done.
Apple’s documented drag-to-reorder procedure is for pinned widgets. If you want a dependable order, pin the widgets first.
How to customize supported widgets
Some widgets show an expand button or another configuration control while you add or edit them. Use it to choose the information or accessory shown. For example, Apple’s Home widget can let you select a frequently used home accessory. Options vary by widget; customization is not available for every one. Apple’s watchOS 26 update notes also describe configurable Smart Stack widgets.

Live Activities in the Smart Stack
When an activity is underway, its Live Activity may appear at the top of the Smart Stack. Tap it from the watch face to open it; if more than one is available, open the stack and scroll to the one you want. Press the Digital Crown to return to the watch face.
In the watchOS 26 behavior Apple documents, the Smart Stack remains open by default while a Live Activity is running, even when your wrist is down. To adjust this behavior, go to Settings → Smart Stack → Live Activities on the watch.
Smart Stack hints and suggestions
In watchOS 26, the watch can show a Smart Stack hint when it predicts a suggestion is useful. A small icon appears at the bottom of the watch face, and the watch may gently tap your wrist. Tap the hint to open it; swipe down on it to mute that hint for 24 hours.
Suggestions such as workout prompts may take time to reflect your routine as the watch learns it. Apple documents temporary muting for 24 hours; that guidance does not establish a permanent disable option.

Widgets versus complications and Control Center
| Surface | How to find it | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|
| Smart Stack widgets | Open the Smart Stack from the watch face | Several glanceable panels, contextual suggestions, or shortcuts you do not need displayed constantly |
| Complications | Choose a watch face that supports them and configure its face slots | Information you want visible directly on the watch face |
| Control Center | Press the side button | Quick controls such as connectivity, Focus, accessibility, Backtrack, Home, Notes, Reminders, Shortcuts, and supported third-party controls |
Widgets are in the Smart Stack; they are not placed directly into watch-face slots. Choose a complication when you want information to stay visible on the face, or a Smart Stack widget when you prefer a larger glance or contextual shortcut. Control Center is a separate surface: changing its controls does not change your widgets. See Apple’s Control Center guide and watch settings guide.

The Smart Stack will not open
From the watch face, turn the Digital Crown upward. This is a reliable alternative if swiping up is not producing the expected result. The side button opens Control Center, not the Smart Stack.
A widget is missing
- Check whether it has been added: open the Smart Stack, scroll to the bottom, tap Edit, then Add Widget.
- Scroll through the stack; the widget may be farther down.
- Make sure you are looking in the Smart Stack rather than on the face or in Control Center.
- If you want information permanently on the face, look for a complication instead. If you want a quick control, check Control Center.
- If it still is not available, app support, watch model, watchOS version, region, or setup may be relevant; availability can vary, and the guide does not establish one universal cause for a missing widget.
The widget order keeps changing
The Smart Stack is designed to surface information contextually. Pin a widget you need in a consistent position, then reorder pinned widgets in Edit.
A widget has no customization option
Only some widgets offer configuration. If no expand or configuration control appears while adding or editing one, that widget may not expose choices there.

A Live Activity stays visible
That can be expected under the watchOS 26 behavior Apple documents. Adjust it under Settings → Smart Stack → Live Activities.
The Home widget does not show an accessory
Check that the accessory is part of your Apple Home setup. Apple says accessories, scenes, and rooms added on iPhone are available on Apple Watch, but the widget does not promise identical controls for every smart-home device.
A practical way to set up your stack
Start with the information you actually check, such as weather or activity, then add a timer or productivity shortcut if useful. Add a Home or device-control widget only if your setup supports it. Pin the few widgets whose positions matter, and leave others unpinned if you want the stack’s contextual ordering to surface them.
