The defensible way to authenticate a pre-owned Richard Mille is to build a chain of evidence: match the watch to its serial-linked warranty documentation or supported digital certificate, obtain its service booklet and certificate of authenticity, confirm the seller and transfer history through an authorized channel, and make the purchase conditional on a written inspection by Richard Mille or an approved pre-owned retailer. A loupe can help you spot visible inconsistencies, but it cannot authenticate the watch or prove that the seller owns it.
Do not send payment merely because a serial number looks plausible or a card appears genuine. The serial, documents, service history, ownership trail, physical watch and seller must agree.

What evidence actually proves a pre-owned Richard Mille is genuine?
No single visual detail is conclusive. The strongest case combines original brand records, a matching watch, an accountable seller and an authorized inspection.
The serial-linked warranty record
Richard Mille states that every timepiece is supplied with a warranty card carrying a holographic security seal issued by the manufacture in Les Breuleux, Switzerland. Official boutique staff sign and date the card, which is paired with the watch’s serial number and records purchase, servicing and warranty history.

Check the physical card for the holographic seal, signature and date, then compare the serial shown on the card with the serial associated with the watch. A card that is missing, altered, mismatched or explained only by a seller’s verbal story is a material gap in the evidence. Do not try to open the case or remove a caseback to find a number; ask an authorized service channel to perform any internal inspection.
The official pre-owned document package
Richard Mille’s pre-owned program says an approved retailer restores the watch mechanically and aesthetically and supplies a service booklet, certificate of authenticity and a 24-month international warranty. Those documents are more useful than a generic “authenticity certificate” produced by an unrelated dealer because they connect the watch to the brand’s own service and sales process.
An authorized physical examination
Richard Mille says its approved network uses watchmakers trained at the manufacture and gives retailers access to genuine parts, tooling, straps and equipment. A written inspection from Richard Mille or an approved pre-owned retailer can identify construction, movement, case and documentation problems that a buyer cannot reliably assess at home.
Digital certification, where the model supports it
Richard Mille’s blockchain-backed certification system adds a digital certificate, proof of ownership, servicing and warranty records, and a way to transfer ownership securely. The RM 43-01 and RM UP-01 Ferrari were identified as the first models in the rollout, so digital features are model-dependent rather than universal. The Richard Mille Certification app listing was updated on March 3, 2026.
How do I verify a used Richard Mille step by step?
Complete these checks before releasing an irreversible payment. If the seller will not cooperate, treat that refusal as a reason to stop rather than as a problem to solve after closing.
- Identify the exact watch. Record the model or reference, case material, movement or calibre information shown in the paperwork, serial number and every accessory supplied. Photograph the watch, serial-related markings and all documents before the transaction. Keep the original files with the purchase record.
- Inspect the warranty documentation. Look for the holographic security seal, official boutique signature and date. Confirm that the serial on the card corresponds to the watch and ask the authorized channel to confirm what purchase, service and warranty information it can validate. A photograph of a card is not a substitute for examining the original and matching it through an official channel.
- Request the complete provenance file. Ask for the original warranty card, service booklet, certificate of authenticity, service invoices, service dates and current warranty status. Request a written chain of ownership from the seller, including how and when the seller acquired the watch. Preserve copies of every page; do not rely on a summary typed into an advertisement.
- Use the digital platform when applicable. For a supported model, ask the current owner to open the Richard Mille Certification record in front of you. The record may show status, the digital certificate, proof of ownership, servicing and warranty records. Ask the owner to demonstrate the transfer process rather than accepting a screenshot, and check whether the watch is reported lost or stolen within the platform’s available functions.
- Contact an official channel before payment. Use a Richard Mille boutique or an approved pre-owned retailer and provide the specific reference and serial for the verification they are willing to perform. Ask what documents they require, whether they can inspect the watch, and what written result they will issue. An official channel may limit the personal information it can disclose, but it should be able to explain which authenticity and service questions it can answer.
- Investigate service and modification history. Ask whether the case, crystal, dial, bezel, strap, buckle or movement has ever been replaced, refinished or modified. Ask where each intervention occurred and request the related invoice. Richard Mille warns that work performed outside its network voids warranty protection and can involve recasing, replacement sapphire cases or disassembly of the bezel, dial or strap.
- Make the sale conditional on a written inspection. Put the inspection requirement in the purchase agreement and specify who performs it. Obtain a serial-numbered invoice, seller identification, payment trail and a signed statement covering title and any known lien, theft or other ownership claim. Keep the agreement, inspection report and communications together, and use a return or escrow arrangement that gives the inspection a practical remedy.
What should the paperwork for a pre-owned Richard Mille contain?
Use the table as a minimum document checklist. “Not stated” means the brand’s published material does not promise that item for every watch; ask the seller and authorized channel directly.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches| Document or record | What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Original warranty card | Holographic security seal, boutique signature and date, and serial match | Richard Mille says it carries purchase, servicing and warranty history linked to the watch |
| Service booklet | Entries, dates, servicing location and consistency with invoices | Shows documented maintenance rather than an unsupported service claim |
| Certificate of authenticity | Issuing channel and correspondence with the exact watch | Part of the package described for watches sold through the official pre-owned program |
| Service invoices | Work performed, replaced parts, dates and serial or reference where shown | Helps identify factory work, modifications and gaps in the timeline |
| Digital certificate, if supported | Status, ownership, servicing and warranty entries in the official platform | Adds a digital record and transfer mechanism for eligible models |
| Chain-of-title statement | Seller identity, acquisition history and any known claim or lien | Addresses ownership, which an authenticity document alone does not prove |
| Current warranty terms | Issuer, coverage period and conditions attached to this sale | Prevents an old or unrelated warranty promise being treated as current |
Boxes, spare straps and other accessories can help establish continuity, but the serial-linked records and authorized inspection carry more evidentiary weight. Photograph any missing item and have the omission written into the transaction record.

How does Richard Mille’s digital ownership certificate work?
The digital system is intended to supplement, not replace, the physical watch and its documentation. Richard Mille describes blockchain-backed certification that can display the watch’s status, digital certificate, proof of ownership, servicing and warranty records. It also supports secure ownership transfers and reporting a watch lost or stolen.
Confirm model eligibility
The rollout is not stated to cover every Richard Mille reference. The RM 43-01 and RM UP-01 Ferrari were identified as the first models, so ask the brand or an approved retailer whether the particular reference is enrolled. If it is not supported, require the physical document trail and an authorized inspection instead.
Watch the transfer, do not accept a screenshot
Have the current owner show the live record and complete the transfer through the official process after the sale conditions are satisfied. A screenshot can be old, edited or associated with another watch. Record the date of transfer and retain confirmation alongside the invoice.
Understand what the platform does not establish
A digital record can show an ownership status or transfer event without giving you unrestricted personal details about every previous owner. Ask the authorized channel what historical information it can lawfully verify and obtain a written chain-of-title statement from the seller.
How can I verify the previous owner and ownership history?
Ownership history is a title question, not merely an authenticity question. Build it from dated documents and seller declarations, then ask an authorized channel to confirm whatever it is permitted to confirm.
Start with dated records
Collect purchase invoices, service invoices, warranty records and transfer confirmations in chronological order. For each period, note the owner or selling entity, date, location, serial or reference shown, and any gap. Ask the seller to explain every gap in writing.
Use the brand’s historical fields where available
A Richard Mille magazine article from the late 2010s describes owner-history fields for first, second, third and fourth owners and advises visiting an official boutique before buying on the secondary market. Those fields can help corroborate a sequence, but they should not be treated as a promise that the brand will disclose every prior owner’s personal identity.

Get a seller declaration
The sale document should identify the seller, state how the seller acquired the watch, and disclose known liens, theft claims or disputes. Require the seller to sign the statement and attach copies of the documents supporting it. If the seller is a company, verify the contracting entity and keep the representative’s name and contact details.
Resolve gaps before closing
A missing period is not automatically proof of theft or counterfeit, but it is an unresolved risk. Ask the boutique or approved retailer whether the available records can confirm service or ownership status. Do not let a lower price substitute for a missing chain of title.
What does authorized servicing reveal about the watch?
A service history can show whether the watch has been maintained correctly and whether significant components were changed. It cannot, by itself, prove that the seller owns the watch, so keep service evidence separate from title evidence.
Work described by the pre-owned program
Richard Mille lists case cleaning or refurbishment, crystal and gasket replacement, water-resistance testing, strap and buckle work, and a final technical and aesthetic inspection. Movement work includes complete dismantling, cleaning, oiling, reassembly, running and power-reserve measurement, followed by final inspection. These are the processes the program describes; request the actual invoice or report for the watch rather than assuming every operation was performed.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Service intervals
Richard Mille advises regular servicing every three years. It advises a water-resistance check every year when the watch is regularly immersed. Treat those as the brand’s maintenance recommendations, not proof that a particular watch was serviced on schedule.
Why outside work is a serious warning
Richard Mille states that interventions outside its network void the warranty. Ask specifically about third-party movement work, case recasing, replacement sapphire cases, and any disassembly of the bezel, dial or strap. A seller who cannot identify who performed the work or which parts were used has left a significant technical and warranty risk for the buyer.
Can a jeweler’s loupe authenticate a Richard Mille?
No. A 10x illuminated jeweler’s loupe is a visual aid that may help you inspect finishing, printing, screws, edges and visible markings, but it cannot validate the serial-linked warranty record, confirm a digital ownership record, detect every internal substitution or prove title.

Use magnification only for preliminary observation under good light. Do not remove screws, open the case, separate the bezel or attempt a movement inspection yourself. Record observations and give them to an authorized watchmaker, who can examine the watch with the correct equipment and documentation.
Who should perform the final inspection?
Richard Mille itself or an approved pre-owned retailer is the defensible choice for a high-value purchase. The brand says approved retailers use watchmakers trained at the manufacture and have access to genuine parts, tooling, straps and equipment. The Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry reported on July 8, 2021 that watches in the certified pre-owned network were evaluated, authenticated and restored by in-house watchmakers.
Ask for a written report that identifies the watch by serial or reference, states what was examined, lists discrepancies or replaced parts, and identifies the inspecting entity. A generic report from a jeweler who cannot access Richard Mille records may be useful as a preliminary condition assessment, but it should not be presented as brand authentication.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should I compare two pre-owned Richard Mille listings?
Compare the evidence and transaction protections, not just the asking prices. The following framework keeps the decision focused on risks that can be verified.
| Comparison point | Stronger position | Higher-risk position |
|---|---|---|
| Seller | Richard Mille boutique or approved pre-owned retailer with a written process | Private or unauthorized seller unwilling to permit official inspection |
| Serial documentation | Original warranty card with seal, signature, date and matching serial | Missing, replaced, altered or mismatched card |
| Service history | Dated factory or approved-network records and invoices | Unverifiable claims or undocumented third-party work |
| Certificate and warranty | Certificate of authenticity and applicable current warranty terms | Generic certificate or historical warranty language with no current confirmation |
| Digital status | Live official record and completed transfer for a supported model | Screenshot, no eligibility confirmation or no transfer path |
| Ownership trail | Seller identity, dated documents and signed chain-of-title statement | Unexplained gaps, anonymous seller or refusal to disclose acquisition |
| Transaction safeguards | Written inspection condition, serial-numbered invoice, payment trail and practical return or escrow terms | Irreversible payment before inspection or pressure to close immediately |
A lower price does not offset an unverifiable serial, missing provenance or an inspection condition that exists only verbally.
What are the most important red flags, and what should I do?
- The serial does not match. Stop the transaction and ask an authorized channel whether the watch or card has been altered. Do not accept a promise to “correct the paperwork later.”
- The card lacks the expected security features. Photograph the card and seek official confirmation. Do not treat a convincing print or hologram viewed online as proof.
- The seller refuses an authorized inspection. Withdraw unless the seller agrees to a written, independent remedy. A refusal prevents you from resolving the central authenticity question.
- Third-party work is disclosed but undocumented. Ask for invoices, parts details and the effect on warranty status. Richard Mille’s published position is that unauthorized intervention voids warranty protection.
- The watch has been recased or has replacement sapphire components. Require a brand or approved-retailer assessment before proceeding; these are specifically identified risks in Richard Mille’s servicing guidance.
- Ownership history stops at an anonymous intermediary. Request a signed title statement and ask the official channel what it can verify. If the gap remains material, do not buy.
- The seller relies on a loupe or photographs as authentication. Treat those as visual evidence only and insist on records and an authorized inspection.
Which warranty wording applies to a pre-owned watch?
Use the warranty document and current authorized-retailer terms issued for the specific watch. Richard Mille’s current pre-owned program describes a 24-month international warranty for watches bought from Richard Mille pre-owned retailers, valid in those pre-owned boutiques and Richard Mille boutiques.
A Richard Mille magazine article published in the late 2010s refers to a transferable five-year warranty in its documentation discussion. That historical wording should not be generalized to every present-day secondary-market sale. Ask the selling channel to state the coverage period, start date, geographic scope and conditions in writing.

What should I retain after the purchase?
Create a permanent file containing the serial-numbered invoice, signed ownership statement, inspection report, original warranty card, service booklet, certificate of authenticity, service invoices, digital transfer confirmation and all communications with the seller and inspecting channel. Record the watch’s condition and accessories at handover with dated photographs.
When the watch is serviced later, add the service report and invoice to the same file. This preserves the evidence for insurance, a future sale or a warranty question without relying on memory or a seller’s account.

Can I check a Richard Mille serial number online by myself?
Do not assume there is a public serial-number lookup that can authenticate a watch. The reliable route is to match the serial to the original warranty record and ask a Richard Mille boutique or approved pre-owned retailer what it can verify.
Does a missing box mean a Richard Mille is counterfeit?
Not by itself. Accessories can support continuity, but the serial-linked warranty record, service documents, ownership statement and authorized inspection are more probative; document any missing item in the sale agreement.
Does third-party servicing automatically mean the watch is fake?
No, but Richard Mille says work outside its network voids the warranty and creates a major risk around parts, modifications and condition. Obtain the complete third-party invoices and have the watch assessed by an authorized channel before buying.
Can the brand give me the names of every previous owner?
There is no promise that unrestricted personal details for every prior owner will be disclosed. Ask the authorized channel what history it can confirm and obtain a dated, signed chain-of-title statement from the seller.
