It is a storage hack, not a purpose-built watch case, and the original setup comes from Fratello writer Daan de Groot’s personal experience.
How the IKEA ELLOVEN watch strap storage hack works
ELLOVEN is sold as a monitor stand with a drawer. De Groot repurposed the divided drawer for watch straps and small accessories, assigning separate sections to different types of straps rather than keeping everything together.
In his October 14, 2022 account, de Groot used one drawer for two-piece leather and rubber straps and another for NATO straps. He put small tools and loose parts in the smaller compartments, and stored steel bracelets there when they were off a watch. The original account is at Fratello.
Drawer dimensions and compartments
IKEA’s Netherlands product listing identifies the current ELLOVEN as item 504.747.70 and gives the drawer’s interior dimensions as 45 cm wide by 24 cm deep. De Groot’s 2022 article describes a layout with one long slot measuring 6.5 × 24 cm, a central compartment measuring 30.5 × 24 cm, and two smaller compartments measuring 16 × 6.5 cm and 7.5 × 6.5 cm. Treat those as the compartments described in that article, not as a current IKEA specification or a fresh measurement.
Choose a layout that makes straps easy to find
Sort by strap type
Separate two-piece straps from NATOs so you can go directly to the style you want. Smaller compartments can hold tools, spring bars or other loose parts, while an off-watch steel bracelet can be kept apart from the straps. This organization reflects de Groot’s setup; the best arrangement depends on what you own.

Fold or lay out NATO straps
De Groot folded his NATO straps, which helped him see and pick them up. Another contributor shown in the article laid NATO straps inside the drawers instead. Folding and laying them out are personal organization choices; consider how much drawer space you have and whether you prefer compact storage or a flatter view.
What to watch out for
- Pull-out safety: De Groot reports that the drawer has no safety hinge and could fall if pulled fully out and left hanging. Do not treat it as a drawer designed specifically for watch storage.
- Stacking: He tried stacking two stands and found the arrangement unstable. He preferred the look of placing one bamboo drawer under another, but that is an aesthetic impression, not evidence of tested stability.
- Local product details: The cited ELLOVEN dimensions come from IKEA Netherlands. Product details, price and stock can vary by market and change over time.
Alternatives to the ELLOVEN hack
Dedicated strap organizer tray
A divided strap tray is a more purpose-specific option to consider. A Fratello commenter said bamboo trays were available on Amazon and that they fit ordinary straps and perhaps shorter bracelets, but not unfolded NATO straps. That is one reader’s anecdote, not confirmation of a current listing, product quality or fit across brands. Measure your straps and check the tray’s dimensions before choosing one. Watch box or drawer organizer
A watch box or a general drawer organizer may suit a collection that includes watches as well as spare straps. Compare compartment size, how clearly you can see each strap, and whether tools or bracelets need their own sections. These are alternatives to consider, not products tested in the original account.
IKEA SKÅDIS pegboard
SKÅDIS is a customizable pegboard storage line that can hold small items, but it is an adjacent storage idea rather than the strap-drawer hack described above. How to decide if this storage approach suits you
- Check whether the drawer can accommodate your two-piece straps and whether you are comfortable folding NATO straps.
- Consider whether the compartments give enough separation for straps, bracelets and small parts.
- Think about whether an open drawer improves visibility and access in your setup, while keeping the drawer from being left extended.
- Compare the furniture footprint and placement with a dedicated tray, watch box or drawer organizer.
- Verify local IKEA availability and current product details rather than relying on another country’s listing.
