Seiko Diver’s Watch—also presented as The Birth of Seiko Professional Diver’s Watch—is a collector-focused history of Seiko’s professional divers, from the 62MAS to later mechanical models. The 178-page Japanese/English book combines interviews with Seiko designers and engineers, expedition photographs, technical drawings, movement information and model comparisons. It is a specialist reference rather than a general survey of Seiko watches.

What the book covers

Published in May 2021, the book traces Seiko diver-watch development beginning with the 62MAS and continuing through models including the 6309, 2205 and 4S15. Fratello’s 2021 review also describes coverage of the 6215-7000 and 6159-7010, placing the early 62MAS in the context of later professional divers. The reference entry from Plus9Time lists the book at 178 pages and 29.7 × 21.0 cm, in Japanese and English.

Its historical scope also includes Japanese Antarctic expedition watches, 62MAS examples marked Daini Seikosha, and the Silver Wave mark, according to Plus9Time’s reference entry.

What makes it useful to collectors

Interviews and development history

Plus9Time lists interviews with Seiko engineers and designers including Taro Tanaka, Akio Nishizawa, Hideaki Uchiyama, Yasutaka Taruzawa, Tasuku Nakazawa, Gen Mitamura and Nobuhiro Kosugi. Fratello’s review reproduces a recollection attributed to Tanaka about the 6217’s hurried development: “The 6217 was a product that we put together hurriedly in order to meet the delivery date without knowing what a diver’s watch was at that time.” The line is Tanaka’s recollection as quoted in the book and reproduced by reviewer Tomas Rosputinsky; it is not an independently verified transcript.

Photographs and technical reference material

Fratello describes photographs from Antarctic research expeditions alongside technical drawings, movement specification sheets and model-comparison tables. It also notes original part numbers for components such as crowns and crystals. Those details make the book potentially valuable when comparing generations or investigating parts and design changes, beyond its narrative history.

Antarctic context and early model details

Fratello’s 2021 review says Seiko donated 48 watches for the 1966 JARE-8 mission, and reports that the 62MAS had to withstand temperatures down to −50°C. These are figures reported by the reviewer, not figures established here from an official Seiko release. The Seiko Guy’s 62MAS historical guide distinguishes the 6217-8000 and 6217-8001 versions: the first had a smaller crown, replaced in the later version by a larger one that was easier to operate, including with gloves. The guide also says the improved version later accompanied JARE-8.

Fratello describes the 6159-7010 as rated to 600m. Separately, The Seiko Guy relays a 150m water-resistance figure for the 62MAS from a contemporary 1965 magazine account; that secondary guide is not a substitute for the original advertisement. Treat both figures as source-attributed historical details rather than independently verified official specifications.

First and second editions

Plus9Time announced a second edition in September 2021 and reported that the content remained the same, with slight formatting and English-translation updates. The physical differences it identified were the removal of the dust cover, bronze rather than gold lettering on the front, and a note on the final page identifying the second edition. Its second-edition announcement is useful when checking a copy’s edition.

Is it worth tracking down?

For a collector interested specifically in Seiko professional-diver history, the combination of interviews, expedition material, model comparisons and component-level reference details gives the book a clear niche. It is less suited to someone seeking a broad introduction to the entire Seiko catalogue. When comparing copies, check the edition, whether the listing is for a physical or digital format, language and translation details, condition, seller reliability, and confirmed price and stock.

Present-day availability, current price and the editions or formats now on sale have not been independently established. A forum discussion refers to a Japanese-edition Kindle-shop listing and to a member’s report that the print version had sold out, but this is an anecdotal, dated marketplace signal rather than confirmation of current availability. See the Uhrforum discussion only as historical context; confirm any listing directly with its seller.
