Choose an Official Rolex Service Centre or Official Rolex Retailer while the watch is within Rolex’s five-year guarantee, or whenever factory documentation, Rolex-trained staff and the brand’s service guarantee are decisive. For an out-of-guarantee watch, a demonstrably qualified independent can offer local access, potentially shorter timing, cost flexibility and more control over vintage parts and polishing—but only after you verify the individual’s calibre experience, equipment, parts policy, estimate and written warranty.
The short answer
The right provider depends first on guarantee status, then on the condition and history of the watch and your priorities. Rolex’s current guarantee excludes repairs, opening or manipulation of the watch by anyone other than an Official Rolex Jeweler or an Official Rolex Service Center
, as well as parts that are not genuine Rolex parts. If the watch is still inside its five-year international guarantee, the official route is therefore the prudent choice unless Rolex confirms an exception in writing.

Once the guarantee has expired, the decision is less about a universal “better” option and more about documented competence. An official centre gives you a defined factory process, Rolex-trained and certified watchmakers, genuine-parts controls, formal testing and a two-year international service guarantee. A strong independent may be preferable when you need a nearby specialist, a potentially shorter turnaround, a more flexible estimate, or careful preservation of original and vintage components. Those advantages are possibilities, not automatic savings or proof of equal quality.
What Rolex’s official service includes
Rolex describes a complete overhaul as a full mechanical and external service rather than a quick adjustment. The watch is assessed before work begins, and Rolex issues an estimate for your approval. The published procedure includes:

- Testing waterproofness, power reserve and precision before the watch is returned.
After an official service, Rolex says the watch carries an international two-year service guarantee covering replacement parts and labour. Rolex World Service also describes workshops staffed by Rolex-trained and certified watchmakers, with parts and labour assured for every watch for at least 35 years after that watch’s catalogue withdrawal. That long-term support is especially relevant for less common references and owners who want a documented factory trail.
Timing, estimates and the absence of a fixed price
Rolex states that a complete overhaul takes a minimum of four to six weeks, depending on the watch’s condition. The clock should be understood as a minimum published timeframe, not a promise that every watch will be ready in six weeks: an unusual calibre, corrosion, damage discovered during dismantling or an approval delay can extend the process.
Rolex does not publish one universal service price. It evaluates each watch and sends an estimate for approval. The final amount can therefore depend on the calibre, parts that fail inspection, case or bracelet work, and the scope you authorize. Ask the receiving Official Rolex Retailer or Service Centre to identify what is included in the proposed complete overhaul and which findings could trigger a revised estimate.

What an independent watchmaker actually means
“Independent” describes ownership, not a uniform qualification. One workshop may have deep experience with a particular Rolex calibre and modern timing equipment; another may mainly perform battery, bracelet or simple regulation work. Safety depends on the named watchmaker and the proposed job.
A qualified independent can strip, clean, regulate and reassemble Rolex movements and may be able to source genuine parts. Before authorizing work, establish the person’s training, years working on your specific calibre and reference, access to parts, diagnostic equipment, pressure-testing capability, refinishing practice, documentation and written warranty. A confident answer about one vintage reference does not establish competence with every Rolex movement.
Official centre versus independent: the decision axes
| Question | Official Rolex route | Qualified independent route |
|---|---|---|
| Guarantee | Protects the five-year Rolex guarantee when the watch is handled through an Official Rolex Jeweler or Official Rolex Service Center and genuine Rolex parts are used. | Opening or repairing the watch during the guarantee can fall within Rolex’s stated exclusions. Obtain written confirmation from Rolex before choosing another provider. |
| Process | Published complete-overhaul sequence, factory specifications and formal waterproofness, power-reserve and precision checks. | Scope varies by workshop. Require a written description of dismantling, cleaning, lubrication, regulation and tests. |
| Parts | Rolex says parts that fail specifications are replaced with genuine Rolex parts. | Parts provenance is provider-specific. Ask whether replacements are genuine, newly manufactured, refurbished or third-party, and whether removed originals will be returned. |
| Polishing | Case and bracelet refinishing may be part of the official procedure, subject to the estimate and service scope. | You may have more ability to decline polishing or preserve original geometry, but only if the watchmaker agrees in writing. |
| Turnaround | Rolex publishes a minimum of four to six weeks for a complete overhaul, depending on condition. | No universal time applies. Get an expected range and ask how parts delays or additional approval affect it. |
| Guarantee after service | Two-year international service guarantee covering replacement parts and labour. | Terms differ. Confirm duration, covered work, exclusions, geographic limits and the claims process before payment. |
| Documentation | Official estimate and service documentation under the Rolex process. | Request an invoice listing calibre/reference, work performed, parts changed, test results and warranty terms. |
When the official route is the safer decision
The watch is still within five years of purchase
New watches purchased from Official Rolex Retailers have a five-year international guarantee according to Rolex’s current FAQ. Because Rolex excludes repairs, opening or manipulation by non-official providers and excludes non-genuine parts, using an independent during this period creates a clear guarantee risk. Keep the purchase and guarantee documents and ask the official provider to record the work.

You need factory traceability
An official estimate, documented overhaul, genuine-parts policy, formal testing and a two-year international service guarantee provide a defined chain of responsibility. This can matter more than a possible difference in price when the watch is valuable, heavily used, water-exposed or difficult to diagnose.
The reference or movement is uncommon
Rolex’s stated assurance of parts and labour for at least 35 years after catalogue withdrawal is a meaningful consideration for discontinued watches. Ask whether the service plan preserves the reference’s correct parts and finish rather than assuming that any compatible component is acceptable.
When a qualified independent may be the better fit
The guarantee has expired
After five years, the guarantee exclusion is no longer the deciding constraint, although the watch still deserves a provider who can meet its technical requirements. Local access can simplify handover, follow-up regulation and future maintenance.
You need control over originality
Collectors of vintage or historically untouched watches may prioritize retaining an original dial, hands, bezel, case lines or period-correct components. An independent may be willing to make polishing optional, return removed parts and separate essential mechanical work from cosmetic recommendations. Confirm those choices before the watch is opened; a verbal promise is difficult to enforce later.
You are comparing timing or estimates
An independent may offer a shorter expected turnaround or a more flexible estimate, but neither is guaranteed. Compare like with like: a regulation and seal replacement is not equivalent to a complete overhaul. A low initial quote can change when worn pivots, damaged threads, corrosion or failed seals are found.

Use the following list with either provider, adapting the questions to the work proposed:
Rank #3
- What exact work is included: complete overhaul, regulation, seal replacement, crystal or bracelet repair, or cosmetic work?
- Which Rolex calibre and reference will you service, and how often do you work on that specific movement?
- Which parts might be replaced, what is their provenance, and will you return removed original parts?
- Is polishing optional? If refinishing is proposed, how will you protect case geometry, chamfers, brushing and vintage surfaces?
- What pressure or waterproofness test will be performed after the case is closed, and will the result be documented?
- What precision and power-reserve checks are included, and will the results appear on the paperwork?
- What is the written expected turnaround, and what events could extend it?
- What is the warranty duration, exactly what does it cover, and who pays shipping or labour if a covered fault appears?
- Is the estimate itemized, and what findings can trigger a revised quote?
- What service record, parts list, test results and warranty document will I receive?
How to compare estimates without being misled
- Define the objective. Decide whether you need a full overhaul, improved timekeeping, restored water resistance, a specific repair or preservation-focused work.
- Match the scope. Put every estimate in the same categories: movement work, seals, crystal, crown, bracelet, case refinishing, testing and shipping.
- Separate required from recommended. Ask which replacement is necessary for safe operation and which is cosmetic or preventive.
- Record parts decisions. Note genuine, refurbished or third-party parts, and whether originals are returned.
- Compare guarantees, not just totals. A two-year international official service guarantee is not directly comparable with an independent’s shorter or narrower warranty.
- Approve in writing. State your polishing preference, originality requirements and maximum authorization before work starts.
Vintage Rolex: parts, polishing and preservation
Vintage service is where the choice can diverge most. Rolex’s official process replaces parts that no longer meet its functional and aesthetic specifications with genuine Rolex parts. That protects function and factory standards, but an owner of a historically important watch may want to discuss whether a period component can be retained, whether a replacement changes the watch’s originality, and whether refinishing is necessary.
An independent is not automatically more preservation-minded. Ask to see examples of comparable work, request that no polishing or replacement occur without approval, and require removed parts to be listed and returned where possible. If a part is unsafe, unavailable or essential to water resistance, the watchmaker should explain the trade-off rather than silently fitting a substitute.
Water resistance and everyday risk
Water resistance is a tested condition, not a permanent attribute. Opening a case, replacing seals, disturbing a crown or changing a crystal can affect it. For any service involving the case, ask for a documented pressure or waterproofness test after assembly. Do not infer water safety from a timing result, a visual inspection or the fact that the watch previously survived water exposure.
Recommended Free Tools
If the watch has suffered moisture ingress, stop wearing it and disclose the event. Corrosion can progress beneath the dial or inside the movement even when the watch is running. The provider should explain the inspection findings and the consequences of delaying treatment.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Choosing by headline price. Fix: compare itemized scope, parts and warranty, not the first number quoted.
- Assuming “independent” means unauthorized or unsafe. Fix: evaluate the individual’s calibre experience, equipment, pressure testing and references.
- Assuming official means every original part will remain. Fix: ask which parts may be replaced and discuss vintage-preservation priorities before approval.
- Authorizing polishing by default. Fix: make refinishing an explicit yes or no on the estimate.
- Relying on a verbal turnaround. Fix: obtain a written expected range and the conditions that can extend it.
- Skipping paperwork. Fix: retain the estimate, invoice, parts list, test results and warranty document with the watch’s records.
A practical decision rule
Send the watch through an Official Rolex Service Centre or Official Rolex Retailer if it is within the five-year guarantee, if factory documentation and international coverage are priorities, or if the reference requires the strongest available parts-support assurance. For an out-of-guarantee watch, choose an independent only when that named watchmaker can answer the technical and preservation questions in writing and the estimate makes the trade-off worthwhile.
Do not decide from reputation alone. The defensible choice is the provider whose scope, parts policy, polishing plan, tests, timing, estimate and warranty match your watch and your priorities.
