Indonesia did not impose a permanent blanket ban on every iPhone 16 or Apple Watch Series 10. In October 2024, the Ministry of Industry blocked commercial domestic sales of the iPhone 16 series because Apple had not completed the investment and TKDN certification requirements. Personal imports could enter under customs and IMEI rules, but could not be resold. Apple later announced authorized Indonesian sales from April 11, 2025.
The Apple Watch Series 10 claim needs more caution: the official material reviewed clearly documents the iPhone 16 restriction, while Apple’s Indonesian announcements and support pages indicate Series 10 availability and Indonesia-specific models.
What Indonesia actually restricted
The Ministry of Industry said the iPhone 16 could not be commercially marketed in Indonesia because Apple had not obtained the required TKDN certification. The ministry’s October 2024 explanation concerned domestic trade, not a universal prohibition on possession. Ministry of Industry explanation

Which iPhone models were involved?
Contemporary statements generally referred to the iPhone 16 series. Apple’s later Indonesian availability announcement specifically named the iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, iPhone 16 Pro Max and iPhone 16e. The iPhone 16e was announced after the original October 2024 dispute, so it should not automatically be described as part of the launch-day restriction without that qualification. Why TKDN and Apple’s investment mattered
TKDN (Tingkat Komponen Dalam Negeri) is Indonesia’s domestic-content framework for covered telecommunications and electronics products. The applicable framework offers more than one compliance route, including manufacturing in Indonesia, domestic application development and qualifying innovation activity. For the iPhone 16, the ministry linked certification to Apple’s investment commitment under the innovation-based route. It later said Apple’s proposed AirTag facility could not automatically count toward iPhone TKDN because the investment was not directly tied to the essential handphone, computer genggam and tablet components covered by the relevant framework. It is therefore too broad to reduce the dispute to a simple “40% Indonesian parts” slogan. The official material centers on the applicable certification route and investment obligations; the exact threshold depends on the product category and rule being applied.

Could tourists bring an iPhone 16 into Indonesia?
Yes, a traveler could bring a phone for genuine personal use, provided the relevant customs, tax and registration requirements were met. That permission did not create a right to operate a resale business.
- Personal import: brought for the traveler’s own use and processed through the required customs channels.
- Commercial import: brought in by an importer for domestic trade and subject to the necessary technical certification.
- Resale: selling a unit that entered under the personal-use exception could breach the conditions of that exception.

What IMEI registration does—and does not do
Indonesia uses IMEI registration to determine whether a foreign-acquired phone, cellular handheld computer or cellular tablet can access Indonesian mobile networks. The Directorate General of Customs and Excise explains the passenger and postal registration process on its official IMEI page.
- IMEI registration can enable local cellular-network access after the required customs process.
- It does not replace TKDN certification for commercial import and sale.
- It does not turn a personal import into authorized resale inventory.

Was Apple Watch Series 10 banned too?
The evidence does not establish a comparable, standalone blanket sales ban on Apple Watch Series 10. Apple announced in September 2024 that Series 10 would come to Indonesia, and its Indonesian support documentation lists Indonesia-specific Series 10 model variants. Apple’s support page published February 2, 2026, expressly refers to Apple Watch Series 10 models “sold in Indonesia,” which is inconsistent with describing the watch as subject to a continuing blanket sales prohibition. Apple support information for models sold in Indonesia
Some reports grouped the watch with Apple products affected by the 2024 dispute, but the clearest official restriction reviewed concerns iPhone 16 commercial sales. Do not infer that every Series 10 configuration has identical Indonesian cellular support: GPS-only and GPS + Cellular watches, regional model numbers, carrier compatibility and local wireless compliance are separate questions.

That date is the practical end of the sales restriction. It is more accurate than saying vaguely that Indonesia “lifted the ban,” because the resolution involved certification followed by an authorized-sales announcement.

- Use an authorized channel. Start with Apple Indonesia’s buying page at apple.com/id/buy or Apple’s authorized-reseller locator.
- Ask about the exact model. Regional radio bands, eSIM arrangements and cellular features can differ even when two phones carry the same retail name.
- Verify the IMEI situation. For an imported phone, ask whether registration and applicable customs charges have been completed. Registration alone does not authorize resale.
- Demand a local invoice and warranty terms. A marketplace listing described as “international,” “ex-import” or “personal import” may not carry Indonesian distributor warranty or the same consumer remedies.
- For Apple Watch, separate GPS from Cellular. Confirm the model number, charging and wireless compliance, and whether the intended Indonesian carrier supports that cellular configuration.
Why gray-market listings remain risky
A gray-market iPhone can be authentic and still be a poor legal or practical purchase. The relevant questions are how it entered Indonesia, whether its IMEI is properly registered, whether it was intended for personal use or resale, whether Apple or an authorized distributor recognizes the warranty, and whether the seller can provide a credible tax invoice and purchase chain.
For Series 10, Apple’s Indonesian model documentation supports local availability, but it does not prove that every foreign cellular variant works identically with Indonesian carriers. Check the exact regional model before paying a premium for an imported watch.
