CEO Laurent Dordet described the year as 23% growth and credited the métier’s singular creativity and watchmaking expertise—not one collection alone. In this February 2024 conversation, he explains the role of the H08, Hermès’ approach to design and complications, and how the company built an integrated Swiss watchmaking operation.
What growth did Hermès Horloger report for 2023?
In an interview published by Monochrome Watches on 28 February 2024, Xavier Markl cited Hermès’ reported 2023 watch sales of €611 million, with growth of 23.2% at constant exchange rates. Dordet rounded the performance to 23% when describing the watch métier. These are figures for 2023, not a current-period sales update or a forecast. Read the interview with Laurent Dordet.
Dordet attributed the result to “singular creativity and exceptional watchmaking expertise.” He pointed to both complicated watches, including Arceau Le temps Voyageur, and established designs such as Cape Cod; he also said the H08 had been a success. Those examples describe his explanation of performance, not evidence that any one model caused the growth.
How does Dordet describe Hermès’ approach to time?
For Dordet, the difference lies in an emotional and playful interpretation of time, expressed through design and watchmaking rather than technical display alone. “We do have a singular approach to time; our wish is to share emotions with our customers and to bring something they won’t find anywhere else.”

He describes the creative priority plainly: “Here at Hermès, technique is at the service of creation, meaning that no compromise will be made on the design.” The interview connects that principle to watches such as Arceau L’heure de la lune and Arceau Le temps Voyageur, as well as to demanding métiers d’art work. Cape Cod, by contrast, represents an established design in the collection.
Dordet’s formulation of the house’s tone is: “At Hermès we do things seriously without taking us too seriously.” He also characterizes the brand’s relationship with time as “Time is a friend telling stories and stirring emotions.”

Why does the H08 matter to the collection?
Dordet presents H08 as a central part of the strengthened men’s range: a sporty watch intended to be versatile, grounded in Hermès’ men’s universe and equipped with manufacture movements. The interview says Hermès has introduced new expressions and innovative materials to the line each year since its 2021 launch.
He offers a personal example rather than an independent product assessment: he says he likes wearing an H08 in braided and aluminized glass fibre, with slate-coloured and green details. He singles out its comfort, case ergonomics and style. The interview does not provide a full specification, price, availability or comparative buying assessment.

How did Hermès build its Swiss watchmaking operation?
Dordet traces the watchmaking operation through a sequence of Swiss facilities and acquisitions. His account describes a gradual move toward integrated capabilities, from assembly and leatherwork to movements, dials and cases.

Dordet describes the outcome as a watch manufacturer with integrated skills and 100% Swiss production. He also says the division has long been 100% Swiss Made and makes components in-house. These are his descriptions in the interview, not a separate audit of sourcing or certification.

What does this interview establish—and what does it not?
The conversation offers Dordet’s account of the 2023 performance, design principles, product strategy and manufacturing history. It does not establish later Hermès Horloger revenue or growth: Hermès’ official strategy page gives company-wide context around creation, craftsmanship and exclusive distribution, but no later watch-segment revenue series. Hermès’ company strategy also describes objects designed to last, be passed on and repaired; that broad policy should not be read as a specific claim about watch servicing.
Accordingly, the 2023 growth figure is best read as a dated business result alongside an executive’s account of its drivers—not as proof of the current trajectory or of a particular watch’s commercial performance.
