MB&F’s 2024 collaboration with master engraver Eddy Jaquet comprises eight unique stainless-steel Legacy Machine Split Escapement watches, each with a hand-engraved dial inspired by a classic adventure novel. Jaquet’s scenes are composed around the watch’s subdials and movement, while the display balance and concealed escapement give the illustrations an unusual mechanical setting.
Eight unique watches, each inspired by a novel
MB&F describes this as its second literary series with Jaquet. Their 2020 collaboration drew on Jules Verne; for the 2024 project, Jaquet selected eight titles from an initial list of 15 novels in the young-fiction category. After reading each work, he created his own interpretation rather than copying an existing illustration. MB&F’s official project page presents the series as eight unique pieces.

How the engraving works around the watch
The dial is not an empty canvas. Jaquet arranged each composition around the date and power-reserve subdials, bridges and hairspring, and MB&F says some of these constraints became part of the scenes. In the Robinson Crusoe example, a subdial frames a ship as if viewed through a telescope.
To make room for the artwork, the LM Split Escapement was adapted with a wider dial plate, a slimmer bezel and newly openworked date and power-reserve subdials. The plate is as thin as 0.35 mm in especially vulnerable areas, demanding a light touch during engraving. Monochrome’s launch coverage identifies the dial baseplate as 18k white gold, with black lacquered subdials; MB&F’s technical material describes the engraved plate and layout. What “split escapement” means here
The 14 mm balance wheel is prominently displayed above the dial, but the anchor and escape wheel sit beneath the movement. Separating those components is the defining visual and mechanical feature of this LM Split Escapement: the visible balance can animate the dial-side composition without the full escapement occupying that same space. The movement was developed for MB&F by Stephen McDonnell.

Launch price and availability
Monochrome reported a launch price of CHF 158,000 excluding taxes on 16 October 2024. That is a historical launch figure, not a verified current asking price. The eight watches are unique pieces, and current availability, resale prices and market value are not established by the cited sources. Anyone seeking one should confirm the situation directly with MB&F or a specialist seller offering a documented watch.

The 2024 pieces continue a partnership that began with the 2020 Jules Verne-inspired series, but they change both the literary subjects and the case material: the later eight-watch series is in stainless steel, while Monochrome identifies the 2020 watches as red gold. The 2024 project’s defining combination is adventure-fiction imagery, individually composed in engraving, with the LM Split Escapement’s large visible balance and hidden escapement.

MB&F founder Maximilian Büsser praised Jaquet’s skill, saying that having him engrave names on movements was like “playing Für Elise on a Stradivarius violin.” The 2024 series instead gives that skill a far more expansive role: each dial becomes a miniature scene built around the mechanics.
