Hanhart’s 417 ES Heritage Flyback pairs a black dial and manually wound flyback chronograph with the brand’s distinctive red pusher, in a choice of 39 mm or 42 mm stainless-steel case. The main differences are case size, lug-to-lug length, caseback and listed lug width—not the movement or core functions.
Why Hanhart made the 417 ES Heritage Flyback
Hanhart says customers had repeatedly asked for a black-dial 417 ES with either an AMT column-wheel flyback movement or a red HyCeram pusher. The Heritage Flyback brings those requested elements together. The manufacturer describes its design as based on the original Bundeswehr chronograph from the 1950s; that is Hanhart’s account of the design lineage.
Hanhart says the red pusher was intended to help pilots avoid resetting the chronograph inadvertently. The brand also recounts a story that a partner marked the pusher with nail polish, but its product page presents that anecdote as uncertain, not established history.
What changes between the 39 mm and 42 mm versions?
Hanhart’s official specifications show the smaller version is also shorter from lug to lug. Both have a listed height of 13.3 mm, while their casebacks and lug widths differ.

These are manufacturer-listed measurements and details. The different lug widths matter when choosing a strap or bracelet: check the accessory listing for the exact version rather than assuming parts fit both sizes. The measurements alone do not establish how either watch will wear on a particular wrist.
Shared design, movement and functions
Both sizes share a black dial, stainless-steel case, fluted bidirectional bezel with a red marker, red HyCeram pusher and domed sapphire crystal. Hanhart specifies water resistance of 10 bar (10 ATM) and Super-LumiNova X2 C3 on the hands and numerals.

The movement is the manually wound Sellita AMT5100 M, a column-wheel flyback chronograph. Hanhart lists a frequency of 28,800 A/h (4 Hz), 23 jewels and a 58-hour power reserve. Functions include flyback, small seconds, a 30-minute counter, central chronograph seconds and hacking seconds. Flyback lets the wearer start a new timing interval with one press, without stopping the chronograph first.

For a size decision, compare the 39 mm case and 46 mm lug-to-lug measurement with the 42 mm case and 49.75 mm lug-to-lug measurement, then consider whether you prefer a solid antimagnetic back or a view of the movement through sapphire. The listed lug width also varies, so confirm strap or bracelet compatibility for the chosen case.
