The Hautlence Sphere Series 1 is a 2023 mechanical watch whose hours appear on a blue rotating sphere rather than a conventional dial. Reference BA80-ST00 pairs that spherical jumping-hour display at 9 o’clock with retrograde minutes at 3 o’clock, inside a horizontal rectangular steel case.
What is the Hautlence Sphere Series 1?
Hautlence’s product page identifies the watch as “THE SPHERE,” Series 1, reference BA80-ST00. Its press archive dates the model to August 2023. It is a hand-wound mechanical watch built around an unconventional way of showing the time: the hour is read from a sphere, while the minutes follow a retrograde track.
The Series 1 is distinct from the earlier HL Sphere 01. The Fondation de la Haute Horlogerie describes that earlier watch with a different movement, white-gold case, 30 m water resistance and an indicated CHF 99,000 price. Those details do not describe BA80-ST00. FHH’s HL Sphere 01 profile is useful for identifying the predecessor, not specifying Series 1.
How does the spherical jumping hour work?
A blue-coated titanium sphere sits at 9 o’clock and serves as the hour display. Hautlence describes it as rotating on three axes, driven by a conical-gear differential: four conical gears move around two crossed spindles set at 21°. At each hour, the sphere performs a choreographed multi-axis jump synchronized with the minute hand’s return.

At 3 o’clock, the retrograde minute hand travels across a sapphire track. When it reaches the end of the scale, it snaps back to the start as the hour changes. Together, the two displays make the transition between hours especially visible.
Hautlence’s product page gives conflicting descriptions of the sphere’s angular travel: its opening copy says about 1½ rotations, while the technical details say approximately 450°, or 1¼ turns. The exact extent should therefore not be treated as settled; the consistent point is that the sphere makes a multi-axis jump at the hour.
