Apple’s current documentation says proximity-triggered pairing is available to EU iPhones running iOS 26.5 or later. Supported third-party accessories may also gain improved notification access, but each manufacturer must implement the relevant features; this is not universal compatibility or Apple Watch parity.
What iOS 26.3 actually introduced
Apple exposed test versions of interoperability features in the iOS 26.3 beta: an accessory-notification framework and support for proximity-triggered pairing. The European Commission says developers could test proximity pairing and improved notifications from December 15, 2025. The Commission’s account describes this as beta access, so it is more accurate to treat iOS 26.3 as the beginning of the work rather than the final consumer rollout. The Commission’s annual DMA report documents the beta timeline.
By the later rollout, Apple’s developer documentation listed proximity pairing for EU iPhones running iOS 26.5 or later. Apple’s developer page sets out the current availability and accessory requirements. The European Commission also describes the iOS 26.3 beta as the test starting point in its overview of the EU interoperability work.
How proximity pairing helps earbuds
With proximity-triggered pairing, a compatible accessory in pairing mode can be detected when it is brought near an eligible iPhone, prompting a pairing flow instead of requiring the user to begin in the usual Bluetooth settings. It is an AirPods-like setup convenience, not a promise that other earbuds gain AirPods’ broader software integration.

Apple’s requirements mean ordinary Bluetooth support is not enough. The accessory maker must implement the specification, complete the required self-certification and server registration, and provide an iOS companion app. Apple says the organization must also be enrolled in the Apple Developer Program. The app and accessory may need their own updates before the prompt works.
Pairing does not mean automatic switching
Proximity pairing concerns initial setup. It does not by itself provide automatic switching between an iPhone and iPad, multipoint behavior, battery reporting, Find My, Siri controls, spatial audio, ear detection, or firmware updates through Apple’s systems. Those capabilities depend on separate integrations and manufacturer support.
The European Commission treats automatic audio switching as a separate interoperability area. Its stated deadline for Apple to expand that capability for non-Apple connected devices is June 1, 2027; that deadline should not be mistaken for a feature delivered by proximity pairing. What changes for third-party smartwatches
The more consequential change for watches is improved access to iPhone notifications. On supported devices, the manufacturer’s implementation may let a watch display incoming alerts and, for supported notification types, offer responses or reactions. Later rollout reporting also describes Live Activities support where implemented. None of these capabilities is automatic for every watch, app, or notification. The interoperability changes do not give a Garmin, Galaxy Watch, Amazfit, Fitbit, or Wear OS watch Apple Watch health features, Apple Pay, watchOS apps, Apple Watch authentication, full background health synchronization, or every Apple communication and continuity feature. Compatibility and interactive functions can vary by exact watch model and its maker’s software.
One notification target at a time
MacRumors reports that notification forwarding is limited to one connected target device at a time: enabling forwarding to a third-party wearable disables forwarding to an Apple Watch. A user who owns both should not assume both watches will receive the same forwarded iPhone notifications simultaneously. The behavior reported for forwarding may also be distinct from notifications handled by an accessory’s own app.

Forwarded alerts have privacy implications
Forwarding notifications and Live Activities exposes their contents to another device. MacRumors reports that Apple’s updated developer terms restrict this forwarded data from being used for advertising, profiling, model training, or location monitoring, and restrict onward transfer to unauthorized apps or devices. These terms concern the specified forwarded data; they are not a blanket assurance about every accessory maker’s wider privacy practices.
Why the changes are EU-specific
The legal basis is the European Union’s Digital Markets Act (DMA), which imposes interoperability obligations on designated gatekeepers. The European Commission issued decisions concerning Apple’s connected-device interoperability obligations and the process for third parties to request iOS interoperability on March 19, 2025. Apple has been implementing the measures through iOS updates on a rolling basis, according to the Commission.
AirPods and Apple Watch historically had system-level access that competing accessories did not. The DMA seeks fairer access to specified iOS capabilities so that connected-device markets are more contestable. It does not require Apple to make every competing product identical to an Apple device: the obligations concern defined interoperability capabilities and access conditions, not wholesale duplication of Apple’s ecosystem.

Who can use the features, and what must be in place
Apple’s current proximity-pairing documentation limits availability to iPhones in the European Union running iOS 26.5 or later. Reporting on the broader wearable changes also identifies an EU Apple Account country or region as relevant. Physical location, iPhone region settings, account eligibility, and the manufacturer’s support are separate considerations; changing a language or region setting alone is not a reliable way to unlock the feature.
- An eligible iPhone running iOS 26.5 or later for proximity-triggered pairing.
- An exact accessory model whose maker explicitly supports the relevant EU interoperability feature.
- Accessory firmware and the iOS companion app updated to versions that support it.
- Bluetooth, accessory-discovery, and notification permissions enabled as required by the app and device.
- For proximity pairing, manufacturer implementation, self-certification, registration, and an iOS companion app.
- For notification forwarding, the desired device selected as the forwarding target, bearing in mind the reported one-target limitation.
These are not interchangeable requirements: a watch may support notifications without supporting proximity pairing, and a pair of earbuds may gain a simpler setup flow without gaining notification forwarding or automatic audio switching.

The pairing prompt does not appear
- Put the accessory into pairing mode and confirm that its exact model supports Apple’s proximity-pairing specification.
- Check that the iPhone runs iOS 26.5 or later and that the accessory firmware and companion app are current.
- Confirm Bluetooth and discovery permissions. If the maker has not completed Apple’s required registration, an iOS update alone cannot fix the missing prompt.
- Check that the Apple Account and device are eligible for the EU feature; do not assume a manual region change is sufficient.
Watch notifications do not arrive
- Confirm that the watch maker has enabled the notification framework for the exact model, rather than only for another watch in the same product family.
- Check notification forwarding and the individual iPhone app’s notification settings, along with any permissions requested by the companion app.
- Check whether an Apple Watch is selected as the forwarding target, or whether the accessory is connected only for calls or media rather than system notification forwarding.
- Ask whether the specific app and alert type support replies or reactions. Access to supported interactions does not guarantee replies for every message or app.
Health features or audio behavior are missing
Notification interoperability does not establish full Health data, workout, sensor, fitness-service, or background health synchronization support. Likewise, proximity pairing will not make earbuds switch automatically between Apple devices; automatic audio switching is a separate workstream.

What remains separate from this rollout
Apple’s broader EU interoperability work also includes areas such as background execution and access to connected-device capabilities. The Commission describes background-execution changes in iOS 26 as helping Bluetooth accessories continue operating after a companion app is quit or a device returns to range. These are related measures, not evidence that every accessory now has unrestricted background operation, health-data access, or the same capabilities as Apple hardware.
What to check before buying a watch or earbuds
Do not buy on the strength of a general claim such as “works with iOS 26.3.” Ask the maker whether the exact model supports the specific function you need, and whether it is available in the EU on your iPhone. For a watch, distinguish notification display from replies, reactions, and Live Activities; check whether forwarding can coexist with your Apple Watch. For earbuds, distinguish a quick pairing prompt from automatic switching, battery reporting, Find My, or other Apple integrations.
Manufacturer support may depend on model, generation, firmware, companion-app version, and region. Until the maker confirms support for the exact product and feature, the iOS changes alone are not a reason to assume an existing accessory will gain new capabilities.
