Mark Cho’s 2019 survey found a reported average ideal daily-watch diameter of 37.77mm, which rounds to 38mm. But the figure describes the preferences of 934 respondents—not a universal rule for what will fit or suit every wrist.
What the 2019 survey actually found
Cho, a watch enthusiast and menswear businessman, collected 934 responses through Instagram. Time+Tide reported that respondents chose 36mm most often for a daily watch, at 25% of votes, followed closely by 38mm at 24%. The reported average ideal daily-watch size was 37.77mm. Those are related but distinct findings: 36mm and 38mm were individual choices, while 37.77mm was the average. The headline’s 38mm takeaway rounds that average.
For weekend watches, the reported average ideal size was 39.28mm—larger than the daily-watch average. The 2019 report’s original linked survey results are not available in the cited article, so these figures are based on Time+Tide’s account rather than an independent examination of raw response charts. Time+Tide’s 2019 survey coverage also cautioned that Cho’s Instagram audience may have leaned toward smaller dress watches.
Who answered, and what their wrist-size answers mean
Respondents described their own wrists: 51% considered them smaller than average, 42% average, and 7% large. Time+Tide reported average circumferences of 6.40 inches for those classified as small, 6.96 inches for average, and 7.77 inches for large.

These are self-reported categories and measurements, not a universal wrist-size standard. The survey does not establish why respondents viewed their wrists as small or show that watch trends caused those perceptions. Its results are best read as a snapshot of preferences in a particular, self-selected group.
Later surveys and polls point to varied preferences
In a 2023 interview, Cho said his first survey ran from August 2018 to March 2021, that he reopened it in September 2022, and that the reopened survey closed in March 2023. He framed his aim as offering more choice, not shrinking every watch: “Different sizes for different people. I’m not advocating for everything to get smaller, I’m advocating for a wider variety of sizes.” GQ’s 2023 interview provides that timeline and quotation.

In August 2026, GQ reported that Cho’s third Ideal Watch Size Survey polled about 3,000 enthusiasts and again found 38mm to be the ideal everyday size among that group. This later result is not the same sample as the 2019 survey, and its reported figure should not be substituted for the 2019 statistics. GQ’s coverage also discusses a 38mm Omega Speedmaster; that product context does not make the watch a survey winner or a Cho endorsement. GQ’s 2026 coverage reports the later survey finding.
A separate PistonHeads poll posted in September 2025 asked members, “What watch size fits your wrist just perfectly?” Among its 99-member poll, 40mm was the largest single choice at 28%, while 38mm received 9%. Its audience and setup differ from Cho’s survey, so it is not a direct comparison; it does illustrate that results can vary with the people being polled. The PistonHeads poll shows its question and reported choices.

How to judge whether 38mm suits you
Use 38mm as a useful reference point if you are exploring everyday watches, not as a prescription. Case diameter alone does not determine how a watch looks or wears. Compare the lug-to-lug length, case shape, and how the watch sits on your own wrist; the cited sources do not establish a validated fit formula or a numerical threshold that guarantees a good fit.
If possible, compare watches in person or check reliable dimensions for the specific model. Two watches with the same diameter can wear differently because their cases and proportions differ. The survey identifies a popular preference, not a model recommendation or a substitute for your own comfort and taste.
