The traditional watchmaking “Holy Trinity” is Audemars Piguet, Patek Philippe, and Vacheron Constantin. It remains useful as a name for a historically specific collector grouping—not as a current, objective ranking of the three best watch brands. The debate is worth having, but any proposed revision needs to say what it is measuring.
Who belongs to the traditional Holy Trinity?
The conventional trio is Audemars Piguet, Patek Philippe, and Vacheron Constantin. Watch writers often call them the “Big Three” as well. The label is a familiar shorthand for three established Swiss maisons associated with heritage, complicated mechanical watchmaking, and highly finished movements; it is not an industry certification or a formally defined award.
Examples help distinguish their identities without reducing them to a ranking: Vacheron Constantin’s Overseas is a modern sports-watch line, while its Historiques collection draws on designs from the maison’s past. Those are illustrative examples, not evidence that one brand outranks another.
How did the label develop?
Fratello’s Thomas Van Straaten writes that the term has been used for the three brands since the 1970s, but says the original coiner is unknown. The account is watch journalism rather than a documented record naming an inventor.

The historical explanation is that the trio combined long-established maisons with complicated mechanical watchmaking and high movement finishing. In the period described by Van Straaten, independent makers were less prominent, A. Lange & Söhne was not operating in its current form, Breguet was struggling, and Jaeger-LeCoultre devoted substantial effort to making movements for other companies. That context helps explain why the three names became a shorthand; it does not establish a formal selection process.
Does the name mean they are still the best three?
No—not by itself. The key distinction is between a historical grouping and a present-day ranking. Van Straaten argues that the label “simply bundles three specific brands that occupy one niche in the collective horological consciousness.” He also notes the difficulty of defining what makes a watch brand great when many companies are doing impressive work.
There is no shared ranking method in the cited coverage that settles which brands are currently the best. Heritage, technical accomplishment, complications, hand finishing, cultural recognition, and scale can all matter, but they do not necessarily point to the same three names. Treating the phrase as a live leaderboard quietly combines those different standards into one unsupported verdict.
Should A. Lange & Söhne or Jaeger-LeCoultre be included?
Both are plausible names in the debate, but adding either requires a stated criterion. A. Lange & Söhne may enter a discussion focused on contemporary high-end mechanical watchmaking; Jaeger-LeCoultre may be considered through its technical history and role in movement-making. Those are different arguments, not proof that either should replace one of the traditional three.

A fair comparison should make its chosen measures explicit:
- Continuity and heritage: What kind of historical continuity counts, and over what period?
- Technical accomplishment: Are complications, movement design, or other innovations being evaluated?
- Finishing and hand craft: What evidence distinguishes refined finishing from a general reputation for quality?
- Authorship and scale: Is the comparison about an individual watchmaker’s work or a maison’s broader output?
- Recognition and reach: Does cultural visibility count, and if so, how is it assessed?
Without agreed measures and consistent evidence, there is no objective basis for removing two original members and installing replacements. The answer changes with the question being asked.

Independent makers are part of the reason the old shorthand feels incomplete to some collectors, but they are not necessarily candidates for the same kind of list. In an August 2026 article, Watchonista grouped Philippe Dufour, François-Paul Journe, Kari Voutilainen, Roger W. Smith, and Rexhep Rexhepi as its “Five Pillars.” That is an editorial selection, not a consensus ranking or a replacement Holy Trinity.
The distinction matters: an individual maker’s authorship and workshop practice are not directly equivalent to the identity and team-based production of a large maison. A list centered on independent creators answers a different question from a list of historic houses, even when both are about exceptional watchmaking.

What is the most useful way to use the term?
Keep “Holy Trinity” for its conventional meaning—Audemars Piguet, Patek Philippe, and Vacheron Constantin—and qualify it when discussing present-day excellence. If you want to argue for a revised group, name the criterion first, explain how it applies to every candidate, and acknowledge that a different criterion could produce a different list.
That approach preserves a useful piece of collector vocabulary without mistaking tradition for an official designation or a current verdict. As Van Straaten puts it, “I do think the critics are right in pointing out that the horological landscape has changed since the 1970s.”
