Yes—most Rado DiaStar models are suitable for daily wear and offer unusually strong resistance to ordinary scratches, but “ceramic case” is not a precise description of every DiaStar. Current DiaStar Original references such as R12170223 and R12160103 use stainless-steel cases with Ceramos™ bezels, while the 1962 DiaStar 1 used a hardmetal case. Ceramos is a ceramic-metal composite rather than a monolithic high-tech-ceramic case.
That construction protects well against normal desk, commuting and office wear. It does not make the watch scratch-proof or impact-proof: abrasive particles such as sand, granite dust and nail-file material can mark hard surfaces, and a sharp impact can chip or fracture them. The exact reference number matters more than the word “ceramic” in a listing.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIs a Rado DiaStar scratch-resistant enough for everyday use?
For ordinary daily activities, generally yes. Rado designs its hard materials to resist the rubbing and contact encountered in normal use, and current DiaStar Original models combine a durable case-and-bezel construction with a sapphire crystal. You can wear one to work, while commuting and during routine errands without treating it like a display-only watch.
The practical limit is important: scratch resistance is not the same as indestructibility. Rado describes its watches as hard but not indestructible. A surface can resist thousands of light contacts yet still be damaged by a harder abrasive particle or a concentrated blow.

What “scratch-resistant” means here
Rado defines scratch-resistant as “capable of withstanding scratching that occurs with normal everyday use.” That is a performance claim about typical wear, not a promise that no mark is possible. The watch remains vulnerable to unusual abrasives, construction debris and impacts.
What material is the DiaStar “ceramic case” actually made from?
Check the reference number before assuming the case is made entirely from ceramic. The current DiaStar Original references documented by Rado use a stainless-steel case and a Ceramos bezel. Ceramos is a ceramic-metal composite containing around 90% titanium carbide. Rado says it improves scratch resistance while weighing less than hardmetal.

The original DiaStar 1, introduced in 1962, used a hardmetal case and sapphire crystal. The DiaStar Original redesign brought Ceramos to the collection in the 60-Year Anniversary edition in 2022. Those materials have different behavior, so a general statement about a “ceramic DiaStar” can be misleading.
| DiaStar construction | Case or bezel material | Crystal | Documented water resistance | Durability implication |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Current DiaStar Original, including R12170223 | Stainless-steel case with Ceramos bezel | Sapphire | 100 m (10 bar) | Scratch-resistant bezel with a steel case; verify the reference before purchase |
| Current DiaStar Original, including R12160103 | Stainless-steel case with Ceramos bezel | Sapphire | 100 m (10 bar) | Same material distinction; everyday use is supported when crown and seals are properly maintained |
| DiaStar 1, introduced in 1962 | Hardmetal case | Sapphire | Model-specific rating | Hardmetal resists routine wear, but its impact behavior and water rating should be assessed by the individual vintage reference |
Some other Rado watches use high-tech ceramic for cases, but that does not automatically describe every DiaStar. If a seller calls a particular DiaStar a ceramic case, compare the claim with the official specification for that exact reference.
How hard are Ceramos, high-tech ceramic and sapphire?
Rado gives approximately 1,250 Vickers for its high-tech ceramic and approximately 2,500 Vickers for sapphire crystal. Vickers hardness is a measure of resistance to indentation; it is useful for comparing materials, but it does not predict every kind of breakage. Hardness helps explain why a surface resists fine scratches, while toughness and geometry influence whether it survives a drop.

High-tech ceramic
Rado describes high-tech ceramic as having a dense structure that resists wear and corrosion. Its approximately 1,250-Vickers hardness is why routine contact with clothing, a desk or other watch hardware is unlikely to leave deep marks. The same hardness can make a sharp impact more consequential because a hard material can fracture rather than dent.

Ceramos combines ceramic properties with a metal component. Rado describes it as approximately 90% titanium carbide and says it weighs less than hardmetal while improving scratch resistance. That makes the bezel particularly well suited to daily contact, but the composite should still be treated as a hard, damageable surface rather than an unbreakable shield.
Sapphire crystal
The sapphire over the dial is harder than the case materials in Rado’s published figures, at about 2,500 Vickers. It is therefore exceptionally resistant to ordinary scratching. Some watches have anti-reflective coatings that can acquire marks even when the sapphire beneath remains intact, so a visible line does not always mean the crystal itself has been scratched.
What can scratch or damage a DiaStar?
Normal rubbing is rarely the main concern. The more realistic risks are hard particles trapped between the watch and another surface, or a forceful impact concentrated on an edge.
- Sand: grains can contain minerals harder than the watch surface. Brushing a sandy watch against a desk or wiping it without removing the grains can create scratches.
- Granite and masonry dust: granite particles and construction residue are abrasive enough to mark high-tech ceramic. The risk is greater during drilling, cutting, tiling or renovation.
- Nail files: abrasive files contain hard particles that Rado specifically identifies as capable of scratching high-tech ceramic.
- Sharp knocks: dropping the watch or striking a door frame, countertop edge or tool can chip or fracture a hard bezel even when light rubbing would not mark it.
- Metal-on-metal contact: another object can leave a transfer mark that looks like a scratch. A watchmaker can determine whether the mark is material transfer, a coating mark or a true groove.
“Scratch-proof” is therefore the wrong expectation. A DiaStar can be highly scratch-resistant in normal use while remaining vulnerable to a small number of unusually hard or high-energy events.

Can you wear a DiaStar during work, exercise and travel?
Use the activity, not the marketing label, to decide. Office work, public transport, driving, shopping and ordinary travel fit the intended daily-wear profile. The watch’s hard surfaces are valuable in those settings because they reduce the cosmetic wear that softer metals commonly show.
Office and commuting
These are low-risk environments. Keep the watch away from rough stone desktops and avoid sliding it through grit or dust. A brief contact with a clean wooden, plastic or finished metal surface is not the same as rubbing it across granite dust.
Exercise and outdoor use
Light exercise is generally compatible with daily wear, but activities with a high probability of falls or direct impacts deserve more caution. Cycling on rough terrain, climbing, contact sports and manual work can transmit a force that scratch testing does not represent. Removing the watch is the safest choice when a fall could strike the case against a hard edge.
Beach, hiking and renovation work
Sand and stone dust create a specific abrasive hazard. During beach use, keep the watch from rubbing against sandy surfaces and rinse or clean it using only care methods approved for the exact model. During masonry or workshop work, remove it rather than relying on the hardness of the bezel.
How should you protect a DiaStar from scratches and chips?
- Identify the reference. Read the number on the case, warranty card or official specification. Confirm whether your watch has a stainless-steel-and-Ceramos construction, hardmetal, or another material.
- Match the watch to the activity. Wear it for routine office and commuting use; remove it for masonry, abrasive workshop tasks, contact sports and activities with a substantial drop risk.
- Remove abrasive particles before wiping. If the watch has been exposed to sand or grit, do not immediately rub the surface with a dry cloth. Use the model’s approved cleaning method so loose particles are not dragged across the case or crystal.
- Keep hard abrasives separate. Store the watch away from nail files, loose tools, stone dust and other abrasive objects. A soft-lined compartment prevents accidental contact during travel.
- Inspect after an impact. Look for a chip, hairline fracture, loose bezel, damaged crown or crystal mark. Do not assume that an absence of a visible scratch means the seals are unaffected.
- Use qualified service for damage or seal checks. Have a service professional assess impact damage and water resistance. Cleaning procedures and service intervals can vary by model, and the cited product specifications do not provide one universal cleaning recipe.
What does the 100 m water rating mean for daily wear?
The cited current DiaStar Original references specify 100 m (10 bar) water resistance. That rating supports substantial everyday water exposure when the watch is in proper condition, but it is not a guarantee that any watch remains sealed indefinitely.

The crown must be correctly positioned, and seals age or can be compromised by an impact. Have water resistance checked according to Rado service guidance, especially after opening the case or after a significant knock. A water rating does not protect the bezel or case from abrasive sand, granite dust or impact damage.
Which DiaStar construction is the better durability choice?
Choose based on the type of damage you are trying to avoid. The following distinctions are more useful than calling every model “ceramic.”
- For a scratch-resistant modern bezel: a current DiaStar Original with a Ceramos bezel offers the documented titanium-carbide composite and a sapphire crystal, while retaining a stainless-steel case.
- For the historical design: a 1962-era DiaStar 1 uses hardmetal and sapphire. Vintage condition, service history and the individual reference’s water rating become particularly important.
- For maximum scratch resistance in a case material: look for a reference explicitly specified as high-tech ceramic rather than inferring it from the DiaStar name. Rado’s approximately 1,250-Vickers figure applies to its high-tech ceramic documentation, not automatically to every Ceramos or hardmetal part.
- For impact-heavy activities: no hard material eliminates risk. A steel case may show a dent where a brittle hard material could chip, while a hard bezel may remain visually clean until a sharp strike causes a fracture. Activity choice matters more than a hardness number alone.
What should you do if the bezel or crystal appears scratched?
First, stop rubbing the mark and examine it under angled light. A pale streak may be transferred material or a damaged anti-reflective coating rather than a groove in the sapphire or Ceramos. If the mark catches a fingernail, appears as a chip, or follows an impact, arrange an inspection rather than attempting abrasive polishing at home.
Do not use household polishing compounds, abrasive pads or a nail file to “remove” a mark. Those products can alter the finish, remove a coating or change the geometry of the bezel. A qualified service center can identify the damaged component and explain whether replacement, refinishing or simple cleaning is appropriate.
Does the DiaStar’s hardness make it maintenance-free?
No. Hardness reduces cosmetic wear; it does not eliminate seal aging, movement service needs or impact inspection. The sapphire crystal can remain clear while a gasket, crown or bezel has been affected by an event that is not obvious at a glance.

Keep records of the reference and service work, follow the model-specific care instructions, and arrange professional checks when the watch has been opened, dropped or exposed to water after a suspected impact. That approach preserves both the appearance and the water-resistance margin.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will a granite countertop definitely scratch a Rado DiaStar?
Not every contact will leave a mark, but granite dust and particles can be harder than high-tech ceramic. Sliding the watch across a dusty stone surface creates a greater risk than briefly touching clean, polished stone.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Does a Ceramos bezel chip more easily than a steel bezel?
The available specifications establish Ceramos composition and scratch resistance, not a universal chip-rate comparison with steel. Any hard bezel can be damaged by a sharp blow, so the watch should be removed for activities where impact is likely.
Can I polish a DiaStar at home?
Home polishing is risky because it can remove a finish, damage an anti-reflective coating or change the bezel’s shape. Have a watch professional identify whether the mark is transfer, coating damage or a genuine scratch before any corrective work.
Is a vintage DiaStar 1 safe to swim with?
Do not infer a swimming rating from the 1962 model’s hardmetal case and sapphire crystal. Vintage references can have different specifications and aged seals; verify the individual watch’s rating and have its water resistance tested before water use.
