The Rolex Sea-Dweller 116600 can make a persuasive case as the best modern Rolex dive watch for someone who wants professional-diver capability in a traditional 40 mm format, with a ceramic bezel and no Cyclops date magnifier. That is a preference-based verdict, not an objective ranking: the larger 126600 has a newer movement, and the right choice depends on what matters most on your wrist.
What is the Rolex Sea-Dweller 116600?
The 116600, often called the Sea-Dweller 4000 or “SD4K,” is the Sea-Dweller reference Rolex brought back in 2014 after a five-year absence. It remained in production until 2017, when the 43 mm 126600 succeeded it. Hodinkee’s reference history and Monochrome’s opinion on the 116600 describe its 40 mm case, calibre 3135, ceramic bezel graduated for each minute, Glidelock bracelet extension and Chromalight display. It has a date window, but no Cyclops lens over it.
Rolex’s Sea-Dweller line was designed for extended underwater missions. Rolex describes the original watch as “a technical divers’ watch that was designed for and in collaboration with the pioneers of professional deep-sea diving, who spent extended periods underwater.” The line was guaranteed waterproof to 610 metres (2,000 feet) at launch in 1967; Rolex says that rating rose to 1,220 metres (4,000 feet) from 1978 onward. See the Rolex Newsroom history and Rolex’s explanation of how the Sea-Dweller manages decompression.
The helium escape valve addresses a particular professional-diving problem: during saturation diving, helium can enter a watch in a pressurized environment. As pressure falls during ascent and decompression, the valve releases excess internal pressure while preserving the watch’s waterproofness. It is a functional feature tied to that use case, rather than a requirement for ordinary swimming or recreational diving.

Why might the 116600 be the best modern Rolex dive watch?
Monochrome’s case for the 116600 is that it combines substantial dive-watch capability with proportions closer to a traditional sports watch. Its 40 mm diameter gives it less visual presence than the 43 mm successor, and the no-Cyclops date keeps the dial treatment comparatively restrained. The bezel’s full-minute graduations are useful for timing, while calibre 3135 represents the movement generation used in the 116600.
Those points support a strong preference, not proof that the watch is universally superior. A 40 mm case does not guarantee comfort: wrist shape, lug fit, bracelet adjustment and tolerance for a heavy steel watch all affect how it wears. A buyer who prioritizes a newer movement or the larger, more prominent look may reasonably prefer the 126600. A buyer who values the 116600’s scale and uncluttered date treatment may see those as decisive advantages.

How does the 116600 compare with the Submariner and 126600?
The following comparison separates facts established by the cited sources from details they do not specify. In particular, the descriptions available here do not provide a complete specification-by-specification or used-price comparison for the older Submariners.

The fairest direct contrast is between the two Sea-Dwellers. The 126600 is larger and uses calibre 3235; the 116600 is 40 mm and uses calibre 3135. The later model adds the familiar Cyclops date magnifier. Both belong to a line with a 1,220-metre/4,000-foot rating, but a model’s rating is not evidence that a particular pre-owned watch remains pressure-tight.

Why was the Sea-Dweller 116600 discontinued?
The 116600 was replaced in 2017 by the 126600, which enlarged the case to 43 mm, added a Cyclops lens and introduced calibre 3235. The sources establish the succession and those design changes, but do not establish Rolex’s specific reasoning for discontinuing the 116600. It is safer to describe the 126600 as the successor than to claim that Rolex withdrew the earlier reference for a particular motive.

Because the reference is discontinued, a prospective buyer is considering a pre-owned watch rather than current production. Bob’s Watches has a reference-specific 116600 guide, but the existence of a guide or shopping page does not establish current stock, a fair market price, or the condition or authenticity of any particular listing. No reliable current resale value is established here.

Before buying, assess the individual watch and the transaction, not just the reference’s specifications:
- Inspect the case, bezel, crystal, dial, hands and bracelet for damage, replaced parts or signs of heavy polishing.
- Ask for service documentation and clarify what work was performed, when, and by whom.
- Check whether the watch is complete with the accessories and documentation the seller claims to include.
- Evaluate the seller’s reputation, written authenticity and condition terms, and return policy before paying.
- For a watch intended for water use, have its condition and pressure resistance assessed by a qualified service provider. The historical depth rating does not certify a used example today.
Rolex says that only official Rolex jewelers are permitted to sell and maintain new Rolex watches. That statement is not a blanket endorsement of any pre-owned seller; buyers still need to assess the specific seller and watch.
