No. Vidya Balan was reported in 2013 as having responded positively to a proposed film about Carnatic singer M. S. Subbulakshmi, but the project was not reported as completed. Later coverage says it was dropped. A separate, newer film, M.S – A Legacy On Screen, is reported to feature Rashmika Mandanna as Subbulakshmi. The sources behind these reports identify filmmaker Rajiv Menon—not R. Balki—as the filmmaker behind Balan’s earlier proposal.
Which legendary singer was Vidya Balan linked to?
The 2013 report was about M. S. Subbulakshmi, the celebrated Carnatic vocalist. NDTV, citing Indo-Asian News Service, reported that filmmaker Rajiv Menon had narrated a proposed biopic script to Balan and that she liked it. Menon’s quoted words were: “I’ve narrated the script to Vidya, and she has liked it.” Read the 2013 NDTV report.
That was a development-stage update: it established a discussion about a proposed role, not a signed, completed, or released film. The report described intentions at the time for a production in Hindi, Tamil, and English, and said new recordings of Subbulakshmi’s songs were planned. Those were plans reported in 2013, not confirmation of what a finished film ultimately contained.
Was R. Balki behind the Vidya Balan project?
The directly relevant report identifies Rajiv Menon as the filmmaker who narrated the script to Balan. The available coverage does not establish an R. Balki connection to this Subbulakshmi proposal, so the director named in the headline cannot be confirmed from these reports. The clearest supported account is that Menon discussed the proposed film with Balan.

Who is set to play Subbulakshmi now?
September 2026 coverage describes a separate project, M.S – A Legacy On Screen, with Rashmika Mandanna set to play Subbulakshmi. The Indian Express reported that Menon’s earlier project with Balan was later dropped. Read The Indian Express report. India Today also covered the newer film’s launch. Read India Today’s report.
At the launch, producer Allu Aravind framed Mandanna’s casting spiritually, saying Subbulakshmi had chosen the actor. That is Aravind’s belief and ceremonial characterization, not a literal or independently verifiable account of how the casting was decided.
Why do some reports mention Geeta Bali?
Balan also played actor Geeta Bali in a special appearance in Ekk Albela, but that film was not a Geeta Bali biopic. NDTV reported Balan making that distinction, so the appearance should not be confused with either the proposed Subbulakshmi film or the newer Mandanna project. Read NDTV’s report on Ekk Albela.
