A Tank Américaine is associated with its curved case and was launched in 1988; Cartier traces the Tank Louis Cartier (Tank LC) lineage to 1921. To identify a specific watch, check its reference number against Cartier’s records: appearance alone cannot establish the exact model or authenticate it.
What the two names mean
Cartier lists Tank Américaine and Tank Louis Cartier separately in its current Tank collection. “Louis Cartier” is part of one model’s name; it does not mean every Tank is a Tank Louis Cartier. The wider Tank family dates to 1917, according to Cartier’s account of the original design.
Both lines share recognizable Tank design language. Cartier describes the family’s parallel brancards (the side bars framing the case), Roman numerals, and winding crown adorned with a cabochon sapphire. Those features can help identify a watch as a Tank, but they do not distinguish these two models on their own.

The product specifications above describe individual examples, not rules for every watch in either line. Cartier’s Americaine history page states: “Launched in 1988, the Tank Américaine drew its inspiration from the Tank Cintrée watch, from which it borrowed its curved case.”

How to identify your particular watch
- Find the reference or model number. Check the watch’s paperwork and any markings, taking care not to treat a serial number as a model reference.
- Compare the reference with Cartier documentation. Match it to a Cartier product page or ask Cartier to confirm the model and configuration. A reference is more useful than a broad resemblance to a product photo.
- Use the case shape as a clue, not a verdict. The Américaine’s curved case is a helpful indication, but appearance alone cannot establish a watch’s exact reference or authenticity.
- Check the full configuration. Case material, dial details, strap, movement, and dimensions can differ across references and production periods; do not identify the model from one of these details alone.
If you are checking a watch listing
Compare the seller’s stated reference with Cartier’s documentation and check that the photographs and specifications correspond to that exact configuration. Also assess the watch’s condition, included documentation, seller, and return terms. A matching reference can help identify the model, but it does not by itself verify authenticity or the condition of the individual watch.
