The IWC Aquatimer is a mechanical dive-watch family, not one fixed specification. Its defining feature is an internally rotating dive-time bezel operated from outside the case; the current Automatic is listed in a 42 mm size, while the current Chronograph is listed at 44 mm and rated by IWC to 300 metres. Older references vary in size, water resistance and movement, so compare the exact reference—not just the Aquatimer name—before buying.
How the Aquatimer’s bezel works
The Aquatimer displays elapsed dive time on an internal rotating bezel. Rather than turning a conventional bezel directly at the edge of the dial, the wearer controls the internal scale from outside the case. IWC says of the current Automatic: “The IWC SafeDive system ensures that it can only be rotated counterclockwise, preventing accidental extension of the dive time.” IWC Aquatimer Automatic
That counter-clockwise-only limitation is a safety-oriented design choice: an accidental turn cannot move the indicated end time later and thereby extend the displayed dive duration. The operating details are model-specific. An IWC manual describes an internal rotating bezel adjusted anti-clockwise via a reset button, and lists 12 bar for the watch covered by that manual; that rating should not be applied to the current Aquatimer line as a whole. Current Automatic versus Chronograph
IWC’s current collection pages distinguish the models most clearly by nominal size and complication. The available excerpts do not provide a matching set of reference-level specifications for both current models, so the table separates what IWC states at collection level from what is documented for named references.

The current Automatic’s reserve wording needs care: IWC’s page-level model information says 120 hours, while its 32000-family description says at least 72 hours. Those statements are not interchangeable; confirm the specification for the precise reference being considered. IWC Aquatimer Automatic
The current Chronograph’s 300-metre claim is a collection-page statement, not a specification that can be projected onto every past Chronograph. For example, IWC lists 12 bar for IW376709, in contrast to 30 bar for IW376806 and IW376802. How large is an IWC Aquatimer?
The stated case sizes range from 42 mm for the current Automatic to 45.6 mm for the cited IW376709. The current Chronograph and IW376806 are listed at 44 mm; the special-edition IW379504 is 45 mm. These are nominal case dimensions, not a prediction of wrist comfort or visual fit. No independent fit measurements or hands-on wrist assessment are established here.
Straps, bracelets and reference checks
IWC documents quick-change straps or bracelets on applicable Aquatimer models. That does not establish that every Aquatimer accessory—or a generic third-party strap—will fit every reference. Before buying a replacement strap or bracelet, verify compatibility with the exact model and reference. IWC Aquatimer Automatic IWC Aquatimer Chronograph IW376806

Is the IWC Aquatimer worth buying?
The Aquatimer is worth considering if you want a mechanical dive watch whose internal timing bezel is externally controlled and whose SafeDive system restricts rotation to counter-clockwise. The choice between Automatic and Chronograph involves more than the added chronograph function: the current models have different stated sizes, and older references bring distinct movements, reserves and water-resistance ratings. Identify the exact reference and check its official specification before deciding.
This is a review of IWC-published specifications, not an independent assessment of accuracy, reliability, comfort, dive performance or value. Current availability can also vary by region; a current collection page or a past-collection listing does not establish stock in every market. No current street-price or competitor-value comparison is established.
