The brand first showed the material in a Pilot’s Watch Chronograph 41 concept in 2024; its announced production debut came in 2026 with the limited-edition Big Pilot’s Watch Perpetual Calendar Ceralume, reference IW505801.
What is IWC Ceralume?
Ceralume is IWC’s proprietary luminous ceramic. Rather than putting luminous paint only on a conventional ceramic case, IWC says it combines ceramic powder with high-grade Super-LumiNova pigments to make the ceramic itself emit light after exposure to light. IWC attributes the development to its engineering division, XPL, with support from experts at RC Tritec. Super-LumiNova is a trademark not owned by IWC. IWC’s 2024 explanation of Ceralume
How does the ceramic glow?
According to IWC, the pigments absorb energy from sunlight or artificial light, store it temporarily, and then release it as visible light. It is photoluminescence, not an electrically powered light or a material that generates light without prior exposure.
The challenge, IWC says, was distributing pigments and ceramic particles of different sizes evenly while retaining the material’s quality. The company developed a customized ball-milling process and adapted the sintering parameters and grinding of the sintered ceramic body. These are IWC’s descriptions of its manufacturing process, rather than independently inspected production findings. IWC’s 2024 technical account

IWC reported that a Ceralume concept watch emitted bright bluish light for more than 24 hours in dark-chamber tests. That is a company-reported result for the tested concept, not a guaranteed glow duration for every watch or under every exposure and viewing condition. IWC, 2024
From 2024 concept to 2026 production watch
The dates mark two different stages in Ceralume’s story. On 27 May 2024, IWC announced the technology and presented a Pilot’s Watch Chronograph 41 concept with a Ceralume case, luminous white dial, and white luminous rubber strap. That was a concept watch, not the production perpetual calendar. IWC, 2024
