IWC’s published specifications identify an automatic caliber 30110, date, magnetic shielding and 12-bar water resistance. One detail is not consistent across IWC’s own materials: its current variant page lists a 39 mm case, while the reference brochure lists 40 mm. The 3239 is also distinct from the newer Ingenieur Automatic 40, launched in 2023.
What is the IWC Ingenieur ref. 3239?
Reference 3239 is a discontinued stainless-steel Ingenieur with an integrated steel bracelet. It belongs to the 2013-era generation and uses a comparatively restrained dial and a case-and-bracelet design language associated with the 1976 Ingenieur SL by Gérald Genta. IWC’s history dates the Ingenieur’s introduction to 1955 and says Genta was commissioned to redesign it in the 1970s; the SL introduced a five-recess bezel, structured dial and integrated H-link bracelet.
IWC’s past-collection pages identify the black-dial IW323902 and silver-dial IW323906. The official reference 3239 brochure also lists IW323904, so the two past-collection pages do not represent the entire family.
Specifications, including the case-size discrepancy
IWC publishes two different case-size figures for this reference family. Its current silver-dial IW323906 past-collection page states 39 mm diameter and 9.9 mm height. The official reference 3239 brochure gives 40 mm diameter and 10 mm height. Those are source-specific published figures; the available official materials do not reconcile them.

IWC’s operating instructions say the watch is water-resistant to 12 bar and protected by sapphire glass rated hardness grade 9 on the Mohs scale. The stated water-resistance rating is not, by itself, a guarantee of suitability for a particular activity; condition and maintenance matter when assessing a pre-owned watch.
What movement is in the IWC 3239?
IWC identifies the IW323906’s movement as caliber 30110 and specifies automatic winding, a 42-hour reserve, 28,800 Vph, 163 components and 21 jewels. The brochure confirms self-winding and an approximately 42-hour reserve, but does not identify an underlying supplier or base caliber.

Fratello attributes the 3239’s caliber 30110 to a Sellita SW200 in its independent review. That is independent reporting, not a base-caliber claim established on IWC’s product page. Professional Watches also identifies caliber 30110, but the cited passage does not independently establish the same Sellita attribution. Read the official caliber identification and the independent base-movement attribution as separate claims.
How the bracelet and case wear in practice
Fratello’s hands-on review describes a solid, relatively heavy bracelet with a hidden clasp, push-button link release and included adjustment tool. It reports half-links but no micro-adjustment. These are reviewer observations rather than a guarantee about the fit of every example: wrist shape, bracelet condition and the links supplied with a particular watch all matter.

When inspecting a used 3239, check whether the adjustment tool and removable links are present, and confirm that the bracelet can be sized to the wearer. Fratello also notes that the brushed surfaces can pick up scratches in use; ordinary wear marks alone do not establish a defect. Its review praises the contrast between brushed and polished surfaces and the relatively restrained dial treatment.

IWC announced the newer Ingenieur Automatic 40 on 27 March 2023 as a contemporary interpretation of the earlier design codes. It is a separate generation, not a renamed 3239. IWC specifies its own-manufacture caliber 32111, a 120-hour power reserve, a soft-iron inner case and 10 bar water resistance. The newer model also has an updated case, bracelet attachment, functional bezel screws and grid dial. These specifications should not be transferred to ref. 3239.

Current resale prices, live stock and service costs are not established here, so compare active listings and obtain a condition-specific assessment rather than treating an old release price as today’s market value. Use the reference number and physical details to verify which variant is being offered.
