The IWC Pilot’s Watch Chronograph 41 is a 41mm stainless-steel automatic chronograph that combines a day/date display with a mechanical stopwatch, 10-bar water resistance and IWC’s quick-change EasX-CHANGE system. The key buying decisions are fit—its 14.5mm thickness and 51.8mm lug-to-lug matter as much as the diameter—then strap or bracelet, dial color and local tax treatment. Calibre 69385 provides a 46-hour power reserve and 4Hz operation. This guide maps every current reference, explains the proprietary strap interface, and puts regional prices into comparable context so you can choose the right configuration rather than simply the lowest advertised figure.
What is the IWC Pilot’s Watch Chronograph 41?
It is a modern pilot-style sports chronograph in a 41mm stainless-steel case. The watch shows hours, minutes, small seconds, day and date, plus elapsed chronograph hours, minutes and seconds. An automatic, IWC-manufactured calibre 69385 powers those functions, while a convex sapphire crystal with antireflective coating on both sides protects the dial.

The collection is built around one case and movement, with the practical variation coming from dial color and the supplied calfskin strap, rubber strap or five-link steel bracelet. IWC’s EasX-CHANGE hardware lets you change fitted straps or the bracelet without conventional spring-bar work, but the interface is proprietary: a normal 20mm strap is not automatically compatible.
What are the exact size and technical specifications?
For fit, read the diameter, height and lug-to-lug measurement together. A 41mm diameter sounds moderate, yet the 14.5mm case and 51.8mm span determine how prominently the chronograph wears.

| Specification | Detail | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Case diameter | 41mm | Contemporary middle size for a pilot chronograph |
| Case height | 14.5mm | Creates noticeable wrist presence and affects cuff clearance |
| Lug-to-lug | 51.8mm | The span to compare with your wrist’s flat top; IWC describes the dimension as wearable even on slender wrists |
| Case material | Stainless steel | Durable, versatile finish shared across the range |
| Water resistance | 10 bar / 100m | Suitable for ordinary water exposure when seals are in good condition; it is not a dive-watch specification |
| Movement | IWC-manufactured calibre 69385 | Automatic winding with integrated mechanical chronograph |
| Frequency | 4Hz / 28,800 vibrations per hour | Standard modern mechanical rate for the calibre |
| Power reserve | 46 hours | About two days when fully wound, so a stopped watch may need resetting after a longer pause |
| Functions | Hours, minutes, small hacking seconds, day, date, chronograph hours, minutes and seconds | Combines everyday calendar information with stopwatch timing |
| Crystal | Convex sapphire, antireflective coating on both sides | High scratch resistance and improved legibility in changing light |
| Case back | Sapphire on the official US specification | Allows a view of the movement on that regional configuration |
| Strap width | 20mm | Measure replacement options carefully; width alone does not confirm EasX-CHANGE fit |
| Buckle width | 18mm | Useful when checking taper and replacement buckle dimensions |
Which IWC Pilot’s Watch Chronograph 41 references are available?
The reference number identifies both the dial and the supplied attachment. Blue and green references formed the original launch family; black-dial versions were added later.
| Reference | Dial | Supplied attachment | Best fit for |
|---|---|---|---|
| IW388101 | Blue | Blue calfskin EasX-CHANGE strap | Dressier, lighter daily wear with a strong pilot-watch color |
| IW388102 | Blue | Five-link stainless-steel bracelet | Integrated sports-watch appearance and maximum metal durability |
| IW388103 | Green | Brown calfskin EasX-CHANGE strap | Warm, vintage-leaning contrast between dial and strap |
| IW388104 | Green | Five-link stainless-steel bracelet | Green dial with a more substantial steel presentation |
| IW388111 | Black | Black calfskin strap | Most restrained, monochrome combination |
| IW388113 | Black | Five-link stainless-steel bracelet | Black dial with the strongest all-purpose sports styling |
Availability can differ by country and by time. IWC also lists rubber as an available attachment type, even though the reference matrix above identifies the principal calfskin and bracelet combinations.

Choose based on climate, clothing and the amount of visual weight you want. The movement and case are shared, so the attachment changes comfort and character more than performance.
Calfskin EasX-CHANGE strap
Calfskin is the lightest and most formal option. It sits close to the wrist, works with tailoring and gives the blue, green or black dial a classic instrument-watch feel. Leather is less suited to repeated soaking, sweat and abrasive outdoor use; allow it to dry naturally and avoid treating the strap as a substitute for a water-resistant sports band.
Rubber strap
Rubber is the practical choice for heat, exercise and frequent water exposure. It gives the 41mm case a more casual look and is easier to rinse than calfskin. Confirm that the rubber version includes the correct EasX-CHANGE end pieces rather than assuming any 20mm rubber strap will lock into the case.
Five-link steel bracelet
The five-link bracelet adds mass and a more integrated appearance. It is the most robust choice for desk-to-weekend use and avoids leather wear, but it can feel heavier and less airy than a strap. Have links sized by a competent watchmaker or retailer so the clasp sits centered without forcing the lugs against the wrist.

How does EasX-CHANGE affect replacement straps?
The nominal strap width is 20mm, but the attachment geometry at the case is proprietary. A generic 20mm strap may be the correct width and still fail to seat, lock or follow the lug profile.
- Identify the exact EasX-CHANGE-compatible strap or bracelet and its end links for your reference.
- Place the watch dial-down on a soft, clean surface.
- Release the EasX-CHANGE mechanism according to the supplied IWC instructions; do not pry against the case or crystal.
- Seat the replacement attachment until both sides lock positively, then pull gently on the strap near each lug to verify engagement.
- Check that the buckle or clasp closes normally and that no end link is pressing into the case.
If a third-party strap is described only as “20mm,” ask the seller whether an EasX-CHANGE adapter or dedicated end link is included before ordering.
Will the 41mm case fit a slender wrist?
It can, but the 51.8mm lug-to-lug distance and 14.5mm height deserve a wrist-on test. A case fits when the lugs stay within the wrist’s edges and the underside does not rock; diameter alone cannot predict that result.
Check the lug span first
Measure the flat width across the top of your wrist, or compare the 51.8mm span with a watch you already wear comfortably. Curved lugs and a flexible strap can make the watch feel shorter than a rigid ruler suggests, while the steel bracelet presents a more continuous, substantial footprint.
Account for thickness
At 14.5mm, the chronograph is taller than a simple time-only watch. It may catch on a close shirt cuff and can feel top-heavy if the strap is too loose. Wear it snugly enough that the case cannot roll toward the outside of the wrist, but not so tightly that the chronograph pushers press into the hand.
Use the attachment to fine-tune comfort
Leather and rubber reduce perceived weight and can suit a smaller wrist. The bracelet distributes mass across more links but increases the sense of solidity. Try the exact dial-and-attachment combination you intend to buy; changing from leather to steel can alter balance even though the case dimensions remain identical.

What does calibre 69385 do?
Calibre 69385 is an automatic mechanical movement operating at 4Hz (28,800 vibrations per hour) with a 46-hour power reserve. Its integrated chronograph records elapsed seconds, minutes and hours, while the main time display includes a day and date indication.
Small hacking seconds
When the crown is pulled to the appropriate time-setting position, the small seconds hand stops. This “hacking” feature lets you synchronize the seconds more precisely with a reference time before pushing the crown back in.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Using the chronograph
The chronograph uses the conventional start, stop and reset sequence through the case pushers. Start timing, stop to read the elapsed interval, and reset only after the chronograph has been stopped. Do not operate pushers underwater or when the crown is not fully secured; water resistance depends on the case seals being correctly closed.
Living with the power reserve
A fully wound movement can run for 46 hours without further winding. If the watch remains off the wrist beyond that period, it may stop; wind and set the time and calendar before wearing it again. Automatic winding replaces routine hand-winding during regular wear but does not eliminate the need to set a watch that has run down.
How much does the IWC Pilot’s Watch Chronograph 41 cost?
Prices below are dated listings from 2026 and are not a single worldwide MSRP. Country, VAT or GST treatment, dial, attachment and whether the seller is IWC or a retailer all affect the displayed amount.
| Reference/configuration | Market and seller | Displayed price | Tax treatment and date context |
|---|---|---|---|
| IW388111, black dial on strap | United States, IWC Schaffhausen | US$7,800 | VAT excluded; 2026 listing |
| IW388101, blue dial on strap | United Kingdom, IWC Schaffhausen | £6,400 | VAT included; 2026 listing |
| IW388103, green dial on strap | European Union, IWC Schaffhausen | €8,100 | VAT included; 2026 listing |
| IW388104, green dial on bracelet | European Union, Wempe | €8,900 | Retailer listing; 2026 |
| IW388101, blue dial on strap | Australia, Watchswiss | A$12,500 | GST included; 2026 listing |
These figures should be compared only after converting currency and normalizing tax. A US price shown before sales tax is not directly comparable with a European price that includes VAT, and a bracelet version generally carries a premium over an otherwise equivalent strap configuration.

What did launch pricing look like?
Launch-era coverage gives historical context, not a current recommended retail price. Monochrome Watches reported €6,850 on leather and €7,600 on steel in 2021; Hodinkee reported US$6,500 on strap and US$7,200 on bracelet in 2021. Later listings reflect market changes, regional taxes and configuration differences, so do not use those launch numbers as a current buying target.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should you compare IW388101, IW388103 and the other references?
Use a four-part comparison rather than choosing by dial color alone.
- Confirm fit: Decide whether 41mm, 14.5mm and 51.8mm suit your wrist and cuff clearance.
- Choose the attachment: Select calfskin for light formal wear, rubber for active use, or the five-link bracelet for a heavier integrated look.
- Choose the dial: Blue is the original versatile color, green adds contrast with its brown leather pairing, and black offers the most restrained palette. Black references IW388111 and IW388113 arrived later than the original blue and green family.
- Normalize the quote: Compare the same attachment, tax basis, currency date and seller type. A direct IWC listing and an authorized-retailer listing can show different totals even for closely related configurations.
What should you check before buying?
- Verify the complete reference number, not just “Chronograph 41,” because the attachment and dial differ.
- Measure or try the 51.8mm lug-to-lug span and 14.5mm height on your wrist.
- Ask whether the supplied strap or bracelet is genuine EasX-CHANGE equipment and whether replacement end links are included.
- Check whether the advertised price includes VAT, GST or sales tax, and whether import charges remain payable.
- Confirm that the watch has the sapphire crystal and, where relevant, the sapphire case back specified for the regional model.
- Inspect the day/date at delivery and verify that the chronograph starts, stops and resets cleanly.
- Keep the invoice, warranty documents and removed links or straps; they help with future service and resale.
What are the main pitfalls?
Confusing width with compatibility
“20mm” describes the nominal width, not the complete interface. Buying a standard strap without the correct adapter can leave an unusable gap or an insecure connection.
Comparing tax-included and tax-excluded prices
Regional pages present taxes differently. Read the tax label beside the number and account for delivery or import costs before deciding that one country is cheaper.

A 41mm diameter can look conservative in a listing photo while the 14.5mm case wears tall. Try the watch with the attachment you intend to use and with the cuffs you normally wear.
Treating 100m as a dive rating
10 bar / 100m is useful everyday water resistance, but it does not provide the specialized case, bezel and testing conventions of a dive watch. Keep the crown secured, avoid pusher operation in water and have seals checked when the watch is serviced or has suffered an impact.

Which configuration is the sensible choice?
For a lighter, more formal daily watch, choose a calfskin reference in the dial color you will wear most. For regular heat, exercise or water exposure, use the compatible rubber option. For one-watch versatility and the most integrated sports appearance, the five-link bracelet is the logical upgrade, provided you are comfortable with the added weight. Whichever route you take, buy the exact reference after checking lug span, case height, tax-inclusive cost and EasX-CHANGE compatibility rather than relying on the 41mm label alone.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is 10-bar water resistance enough for swimming with this watch?
A 10-bar rating is generally intended for routine swimming and surface water when the crown is secured and the seals are sound. It is not a promise that every watch remains safe after aging, impact or neglected seal checks, so avoid pressing the chronograph buttons in water and have water resistance tested after opening the case.

Can I fit a normal 20mm NATO strap to the Pilot’s Watch Chronograph 41?
Not without the correct interface solution. The 20mm measurement is the nominal width, while the EasX-CHANGE end connection is proprietary; use an IWC-compatible adapter or a strap made specifically for this case.
How often should the mechanical movement be serviced?
The supplied specifications do not state a universal service interval. Follow the interval in your warranty or owner documentation and arrange inspection sooner if accuracy changes sharply, the chronograph fails to reset, moisture appears under the crystal or the crown feels abnormal.
Is the sapphire crystal impossible to scratch?
Sapphire is highly scratch-resistant compared with mineral or acrylic crystal, but it is not indestructible. A hard impact against a sharp surface can chip or crack it, so treat the crystal and its antireflective coating as components that still need care.
