Jiro Katayama came to watchmaking by way of automotive and product design, not a conventional watchmaking apprenticeship. A small bench lathe bought at auction first drew him into making metal objects; its size made watch cases a more practical challenge than cars. What followed was a self-directed study of machining and watch construction that shaped Ōtsuka Lōtec’s tactile, industrial approach to mechanical watches.

From automotive design to the workshop

After design school, Katayama worked in automotive design before becoming an independent product designer. His work ranged across vehicles, helmets and household products, according to his official biography. The shift toward watchmaking began outside a watch factory: he bought a small bench lathe through an online auction and started making metal objects.

The lathe was too small for the car-related work he had in mind, but it was suited to making watch cases. Katayama’s official biography dates his first watchmaking efforts to around 2008, when he was in his mid-thirties. He continued product design as his main profession while learning the craft alongside it.

How Katayama taught himself watchmaking

Katayama read books about machining and studied the components, mechanisms, tools and techniques used by independent watchmakers. Rather than beginning with a fully formed brand, he made several watches as he developed his skills. He began selling them in 2012, according to the official biography.

This route matters to the character of Ōtsuka Lōtec. Katayama’s starting point was the work of a product designer handling materials and objects, then learning how to make a watch function as well as look right. His design practice and his watchmaking grew together rather than following separate, established paths.

Why Ōtsuka Lōtec feels tactile and industrial

Katayama works in Tokyo’s Otsuka neighborhood, and the brand name reflects his fondness for “low technology,” as he explains on the official Ōtsuka Lōtec site. The phrase points to an interest in direct, legible mechanisms and the physical character of objects—not a rejection of engineering.

His stated design inspiration comes from things he can touch, look at and interact with. In the official site’s English-language statement, he describes taking cues from the atmosphere, forms, details and textures of objects, or mono. A 2024 Monochrome Watches interview also identifies old film cameras, instruments and gauges as influences. The result is a watchmaking sensibility built around analog interaction and the visible character of assembled metal tools.

No. 9 makes the design philosophy visible

Ōtsuka Lōtec’s No. 9 is a clear example of how Katayama translates industrial references into a watch. The official No. 9 page says its movement was newly developed and designed from scratch by Katayama to expose mechanical elements beneath a sapphire crystal.

Katayama describes the initial idea as a wristwatch that, like an induction electricity meter, would let the wearer see different mechanical parts arranged in a transparent case and watch them move. He says the exposed components might call to mind vacuum tubes, a camera viewfinder or an industrial cityscape. For No. 9, the aim was to make the movement’s parts convey the textures, vibrations and sounds of industrial machinery.

That concept makes the movement part of the watch’s visual subject rather than something hidden behind a conventional dial. The point is not simply to display gears; it is to make their arrangement and motion evoke the engineered objects that inform Katayama’s wider design language.
