The 1980 Joy Division song “Love Will Tear Us Apart” is the track behind the headline. Men’s Journal says it never charted on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100; in the UK, its original run on the Official Singles Chart peaked at No. 13. Rolling Stone later placed it at No. 41 on its 2021 list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. Those figures describe different things: chart performance in a particular market and an editorial ranking decades later.
Which song is the headline about?
It is “Love Will Tear Us Apart,” a standalone, non-album single by the Manchester band Joy Division. Rhino’s label notice describes the track as a non-album single and documents a 2020 remastered 12-inch reissue pairing it with “These Days.” Rhino’s reissue notice provides the label’s details.
What did it achieve on the charts?
United States: the Billboard Hot 100 claim
Men’s Journal reports that the song never charted on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. That claim is attributed to the magazine; the available chart evidence here does not independently confirm it against a Billboard archive. Men’s Journal’s article is the source for the U.S. statement.
United Kingdom: No. 13 on the Official Singles Chart
The UK Official Charts Company lists 28 June 1980 as the first chart date for the original UK Official Singles Chart run and gives the song a peak of No. 13. Its chart history also includes later entries, so the No. 13 figure refers specifically to the original run, not every subsequent appearance. See the Official Charts entry.

Why did Rolling Stone call it one of the greatest songs?
Rolling Stone ranked “Love Will Tear Us Apart” No. 41 in its 2021 list, “The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.” The placement is an editorial judgment, not a chart result or an objective measurement of musical quality. Rolling Stone says it rebuilt the list using ballots from more than 250 artists, musicians and producers, alongside music-industry figures and leading critics and journalists. Each voter submitted a ranked top 50, and the results were tabulated. The list entry describes the song as “The pinnacle of Joy Division’s gloom-ridden Mancunian post-punk vision still hits like an ice pick aimed at your soul.” That is Rolling Stone’s editorial language. Read the Rolling Stone entry and its list methodology.
How to read the three numbers
| Figure | What it measures | Source and period |
|---|---|---|
| No. 13 | Peak position on the original UK Official Singles Chart run | Official Charts Company; first chart date 28 June 1980 |
| No. 41 | Editorial placement among Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Songs of All Time | Rolling Stone; 2021 list |
| No Hot 100 entry, as reported | Claim about the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 | Men’s Journal; not independently confirmed here against Billboard data |
The UK chart peak and the U.S. Hot 100 claim are about different territories. Rolling Stone’s No. 41 is a later critical ranking, not another chart position. The song’s story can therefore include limited chart reach in one measure alongside lasting recognition in a separate editorial list without contradiction.

What is known about the song’s inspiration?
Men’s Journal connects the song to Ian Curtis’s failing marriage and struggles with epilepsy and depression. That interpretation is not independently established by a primary interview or authoritative biography in the sources cited here, so it should be treated as the magazine’s account rather than a confirmed explanation of the song’s meaning.
