The Junghans Meister Telemeter pairs an automatic chronograph with two practical scales: a telemeter for estimating distance from a flash-and-sound delay, and a tachymeter for calculating average speed over a measured kilometre. Junghans currently lists the steel-bracelet 27/3880.46 and a blue-dial limited Telemeter Edition, 27/3587.02. This guide explains the published specifications and how to operate the watch; it is not a wear or performance test.
What the Junghans Meister Telemeter is
The official listing for reference 27/3880.46 describes a self-winding J880.3 chronograph with stop function, telemeter and tachymeter. Its stainless-steel case measures 40.8 mm across and 12.6 mm high, with a screwed caseback and anti-reflective sapphire crystal. The matte silver-plated dial is paired with a steel bracelet and folding clasp. Junghans states a 42-hour power reserve and water resistance up to 5 bar. Junghans lists the steel Telemeter.
These are published specifications, not independent measurements. They establish the listed configuration but do not establish comfort, real-world legibility, measured accuracy or long-term reliability.
What do the telemeter and tachymeter scales do?
Telemeter: estimate distance from a flash and its sound
The telemeter estimates distance by timing the delay between seeing an event that produces light and hearing its sound. For a lightning storm, start the chronograph when you see the flash and stop it when you hear the thunder. Read the elapsed-time hand against the telemeter scale to estimate the distance in kilometres.

- Technology - Self-winding movement calibre J880.3, 42 hours power reserve
- Case - Stainless steel, screwed case back, Ø 40.8 mm, height 12.6 mm
- Strap - Leather strap with stainless steel buckle
- Function - Stop function, Telemeter, Tachymeter
- Dial - Matt silver-plated, dial printing and hands with environmentally friendly luminous substance
Junghans’s manual gives the example that a reading of “2” corresponds to a storm about two kilometres away. Its explanation uses an approximate sound speed of 334 m/s at about 5°C, so the scale is an estimate rather than a guarantee of precision across different atmospheric conditions.
Tachymeter: calculate average speed over a kilometre
The tachymeter indicates average speed over a defined distance. For this watch’s example, start timing at the beginning of a kilometre and stop after travelling that kilometre. The second hand points to the average speed in kilometres per hour: Junghans gives 30 seconds for one kilometre as 120 km/h.
How to operate the J880.3 chronograph
The manual identifies the start-stop pusher, reset pusher, crown, second hand, minute counter and stop-second counter. The chronograph starts and stops with the start-stop pusher; use the reset pusher to return the chronograph hands to zero after stopping. The manual also describes adding successive stopped times, so a measurement can be paused and resumed rather than reset between intervals. Consult the official Meister Telemeter manual for the control diagram and full operating directions.
Movement, winding and power reserve
Junghans describes J880.3 as an automatic movement with chronoscope function, bi-directional automatic winding, 28,800 semi-vibrations per hour and anti-magnetic performance in accordance with DIN 8309. Its stated 42-hour reserve applies without chronograph operation.

The manual says two to three rotations of the crown are enough to start the movement and about 60 rotations fully wind it. After setting the watch, Junghans advises wearing it so movement of the rotor continues winding it automatically. These instructions are specific to J880.3; the same PDF also covers J880.4, which has different winding guidance and a 38-hour reserve.
Can you swim with a 5-bar Meister Telemeter?
No. The manual’s water-resistance table says 5 bar permits washing and showering, but not bathing or swimming. The rating is not a blanket assurance for all conditions: Junghans says its 3–10-bar designation applies only to brand-new watches, external influences can affect water resistance, and regular checks are recommended. The rating on the steel Telemeter listing should therefore be read together with the manual’s usage limits.

Care and strap replacement
Junghans recommends regular inspection by a Junghans specialist and advises that servicing and strap repairs be handled by a specialist. For replacement, its manual recommends a new strap of the same quality, preferably an original Junghans wrist strap. The cited material does not specify lug width or confirm compatibility with generic straps, so check with a specialist before ordering a substitute. Junghans provides a manual index for its instruction documents.
