What is the King Seiko 45-7001?
The 45-7001 is a hand-wound, time-only King Seiko with a three-hand dial and no date. Ferenczi identifies its movement as a Seiko 45(00) running at 36,000 vibrations per hour. He found the manual-wind watch thinner in character than his automatic King Seiko and Grand Seiko watches.
That simple layout is central to the appeal he describes: the watch offers the visual presence of a vintage dress watch without adding a date display or automatic winding to the experience.
Why did it surprise its owner?
A friend who regularly followed auction listings alerted Ferenczi to an example in Japan. He says he was not particularly excited about adding another watch before it arrived, but his reaction changed when he saw and wore it. He described it as beautiful, light and comfortable, and said it suited both evenings in Basel and casual clothing such as shorts and a T-shirt.

That is an owner’s impression rather than a controlled assessment, but it conveys the article’s central point: the 45-7001’s appeal came from how the whole watch felt and looked in everyday wear.

How does the 45-7001 wear?
Ferenczi’s example measures 36 mm across and 41.2 mm lug-to-lug. He found it comfortable, including on a thin leather strap. Those dimensions belong to his watch; vintage examples may differ, so check the specific case before buying or ordering a strap. The article gives an 18 mm lug width for his example.
The modest case size and light feel helped it work for the owner in both dressed-up and relaxed settings. Whether it will feel similarly proportioned on another wrist depends on the individual wearer and the condition and fit of the specific watch.

What is known about its production period?
Ferenczi says the 45-7001 was produced for about six years, citing an earlier article by Mike Stockton. He dates his own example to around mid-1970 based on its reference and serial numbers. These are approximate claims in the Fratello article, not a precise production timeline for every watch carrying the reference.

Ferenczi’s advice is to be patient and look for a decent-condition example; in his view, watches in better condition may command more. His article does not establish a current price, so it should not be used as a valuation or a guide to what a particular listing is worth.
