Its appeal is design-first: it offers a striking alternative to conventional dials, but practical details—including water resistance and the exact specifications—depend on the version. Kollokium’s official site lists Variant H at CHF 3,888.88 and showed it as sold out when checked in 2026.
What makes the Kollokium Projekt 01 different?
Projekt 01 treats the dial as a three-dimensional field rather than a flat surface with printed indices. Its raised cylinders create an irregular, sculptural texture, with light and shadow changing how the dial reads as the viewing angle changes. The design makes the watch’s display its main visual event; it is deliberately far removed from a restrained, conventional tool-watch look.
In his October 29, 2024 review, Blake Buettner describes Kollokium’s approach as “neobrutalist horology.” He quotes the project’s description of its intent: “It’s about capturing a mood,” and relays its comparison that “If traditional watchmaking is a classical opera, kollokium is an indie, gritty sci-fi noir.” Those phrases capture the design ambition, not a claim of superior timekeeping or usability.
Variant H’s luminous dial, explained
488 pins and Lichtblock
Kollokium’s official product page describes Variant H as the matured iteration of Projekt 01. It specifies 488 luminous pin elements in six diameters and heights, made with the ceramic-resin hybrid material Lichtblock™, which the brand says it introduced in 2025. Lichtblock elements also appear in the hour and minute hands. The page reports two grammes of Super-LumiNova in the dial and compares the quantity of lume to nearly 500 traditional pad-printed dials. That is the manufacturer’s comparison of lume quantity, not an independent measurement of brightness or legibility.

Earlier coverage describes versions with 468 markers. That count belongs to earlier iterations, not Variant H’s official 488-pin specification. The different figures are a reason to check the precise reference rather than assume every Projekt 01 has the same dial.
What changing light may mean in practice
The raised elements and luminous material make the dial visually distinctive, but the available reviews do not establish how quickly or accurately a wearer can read it in every lighting condition. Dense, irregular markers may also be less immediately familiar than conventional hands and indices. Treat legibility as a personal-use question: if possible, view the exact version in daylight and low light, and check that you can identify the time at a glance before buying.

Case, fit and movement: confirm the version
Technical details published about earlier iterations are useful reference points, but should not be treated as confirmed Variant H specifications. WatchTested’s May 2024 review reports a 40 mm case base, a 38.5 mm upper case/crystal measure, 20 mm lugs, and a La Joux-Perret G101 automatic movement running at 28,800 vibrations per hour, with a 68-hour power reserve. Those measurements describe the iteration covered in that review.
Coverage describes a box-shaped or unusually cylindrical sapphire crystal and screwdriver-inspired lugs, features that reinforce the watch’s engineered, sculptural character. The crown is another design trade-off: the WatchTested reviewer found it awkward to operate. That is one reviewer’s subjective observation, not a universal fit or handling verdict.

WatchTested described the elastic nylon strap on its reviewed version as comfortable. Strap feel and fit vary by wrist and by strap, so that impression is not a substitute for trying the exact watch. The 20 mm lug width is also a reviewer-reported detail for that iteration; verify compatibility before ordering a replacement strap for another version.
Water resistance is not settled across reviews
The inspected reviews give conflicting figures: WatchTested reports 30 m for its reviewed iteration, while Watch & Heritage reports 50 m in 2026. The available accounts do not resolve whether the difference reflects distinct versions or a reporting inconsistency. Do not apply either number to every Projekt 01. Before purchase, ask the seller for the water-resistance rating of the exact reference and its care guidance; do not infer suitability for swimming from a rating reported for another iteration.

Who is the Projekt 01 for?
Projekt 01 makes most sense for someone who values an unconventional, highly expressive watch design and wants the dial and case to command attention. It is a less obvious choice for a buyer prioritizing familiar instant legibility, understated styling, or confidently established everyday-use specifications across versions. There is no objective overall winner in that trade-off: the right choice depends on how much the design’s originality matters to you relative to versatility and practical certainty.
