Apple’s numbered Apple Watch range runs from Apple Watch Series 1 through Series 11. The original 2015 model came before that numbering system and was officially called Apple Watch, not “Series 0.” Alongside the numbered line, Apple also sells separate SE and Ultra families.

Here is the complete timeline, including launch dates, major upgrades, and the distinctions that are often muddled when comparing used and new Apple Watches.

Every numbered Apple Watch Series

Apple Watch Series 3 September 12, 2017 September 22, 2017 First Apple Watch with an optional built-in cellular connection. It also added a faster dual-core processor and a barometric altimeter.
Apple Watch Series 4 September 12, 2018 September 21, 2018 Received a major case redesign and larger display, plus fall detection and the ECG app. ECG availability varied by country.
Apple Watch Series 5 September 10, 2019 September 20, 2019 Introduced the Always-On Retina display and built-in compass. Titanium and ceramic case choices joined the range.

Apple Watch Series 11 September 9, 2025 September 19, 2025 Added hypertension notifications, sleep score, 5G cellular capability, up to 24 hours of battery life, and more scratch-resistant Ion-X glass on aluminum models.

Apple Watch: the original model, sometimes called “Series 0”

The first Apple Watch was announced in 2014 and went on sale in 2015. Apple identified it as Apple Watch or Apple Watch (1st generation). It was never officially named Apple Watch Series 0.

“Series 0” is a convenient nickname people use to distinguish the original watch from Series 1 and Series 2, both of which arrived in 2016. It should not be treated as an official model name when checking compatibility, buying a replacement, or comparing specifications.

Apple Watch Series 1 and Series 2

Apple launched Series 1 and Series 2 together. They look similar, but they are not the same watch.

  • Series 1 was the cheaper option and upgraded the original design with a dual-core processor.
  • Series 2 added GPS, a brighter display, and 50-meter water resistance, making it considerably more useful for outdoor exercise and swimming.

Neither model has the modern health and safety feature set found on later watches. Their age also makes battery condition, watchOS support, and second-hand pricing especially important.

Apple Watch Series 3 through Series 6

Series 3

Series 3 was the first Apple Watch generation available with cellular connectivity built into the watch. A cellular model could use a supported carrier plan for calls and data without relying entirely on a nearby iPhone. The generation also introduced a barometric altimeter for elevation tracking.

Series 4

Series 4 was one of the largest design changes in the numbered line. Apple reduced the bezels and increased the display area, while adding fall detection and an electrical heart sensor used by the ECG app. ECG support depended on regulatory approval and region, so imported models may not offer identical features.

Series 5

The headline feature of Series 5 was its Always-On Retina display, which allowed the time and complications to remain visible without raising the wrist. A compass was also added, and Apple expanded the materials range with titanium and ceramic cases.

Series 6

Series 6 brought the Blood Oxygen sensor and app, alongside the S6 processor and an always-on altimeter. It retained the general design language of Series 4 and Series 5 but offered newer health sensors and faster performance.

Apple Watch Series 7 through Series 11

Series 7

Series 7 enlarged the display by shrinking the border around it. The tougher front crystal, IP6X dust resistance, and faster charging were more practical upgrades than a simple cosmetic refresh. The larger screen also made on-watch typing and reading notifications easier.

Series 8

Series 8 added a temperature sensor and used temperature data for retrospective ovulation estimates. It also introduced Crash Detection, which can identify a severe car crash and prompt an emergency call. Cellular versions gained international roaming support, subject to carrier and country limitations.

Are Apple Watch Nike, Hermès, and Edition separate Series?

No. Apple Watch Nike, Apple Watch Hermès, and Apple Watch Edition describe editions, materials, or collections based on particular Apple Watch generations. They are not additional hardware generations.

For example, a Nike watch may still be a Series 7, while a Hermès model may still be a Series 8. When checking software support or buying accessories, identify the underlying generation, case size, and case design rather than relying only on the edition name.

  • Apple Watch Series 6 or later
  • Apple Watch SE (2nd generation) or later
  • All Apple Watch Ultra models

The original Apple Watch through Series 5 are excluded from that list. Software support is one of the biggest reasons an apparently cheap older Apple Watch may be poor value. Before buying used, check both the model’s compatibility and the battery’s condition.

How to identify an Apple Watch generation

  1. On the paired iPhone, open the Watch app.
  2. Tap My Watch, then go to General and About.
  3. Read the model name and model number. Tap the model number if you need to reveal the “A” model identifier.
  4. Compare that identifier with Apple’s official model-identification list before purchasing parts or a replacement band.

Do not identify a watch solely by its case color or band. Several generations share similar finishes, and Nike, Hermès, and Edition branding can obscure the actual Series number.
