Lorier Hydra SIII vs. Hydra Zulu: What’s Different?

The Hydra SIII and Hydra Zulu share a flyer GMT and dive-style bezel. Their key differences are the steel-and-gray SIII with bracelet and the black DLC Zulu with rubber strap.

The Lorier Hydra SIII and Hydra Zulu share the same core proposition: a 200m dive-style watch with a Miyota 9075 flyer GMT, a 60-minute elapsed-time bezel and a domed Hesalite crystal. The choice is mainly about appearance and how you want to wear it: the SIII pairs an Admiralty gray dial and stainless-steel bracelet, while the Zulu goes black with a DLC-coated case, orange-and-green lume and a rubber strap.

What differs between the Hydra SIII and the Hydra Zulu?

Fratello’s 2023 review describes the Zulu as technically identical to the Hydra platform, with its black treatment and strap distinguishing it from the standard SIII. The comparison below reflects specifications and package details reported in 2023 reviews, not a current official product listing.

Feature Hydra SIII Hydra Zulu
Case and dial Stainless steel case; Admiralty gray dial. Black DLC-coated case; black dial.
Hands and lume Local-time hands and indices use a different lume color from the 24-hour scale and GMT hand. Main hands and indices glow orange; the 24-hour ring uses mint-green Super-LumiNova C3.
Strap or bracelet Flat-link stainless-steel bracelet with three micro-adjustment holes, according to Fratello. Hodinkee reports single-sided screw links and no quick-release or tool-less micro-adjustment. Bonetto Cinturini rubber strap, according to Fratello.
Movement and functions Miyota 9075 flyer GMT; 60-minute elapsed-time bezel. Same GMT and bezel setup as the Hydra platform, according to Fratello.
Reported case dimensions 41mm diameter, 46mm lug-to-lug, 12.2mm case plus a 2.4mm crystal, for 14.6mm total thickness; 20mm lugs. Fratello describes the Zulu as technically identical to the Hydra platform. Its 2023 article does not separately list a different dimension set.

The Zulu’s all-black look and contrasting lume make it the more visually assertive option; Fratello likens its styling to watches associated with 1980s action films. The SIII is the more conventional steel-and-gray choice. Bracelet adjustability may matter to SIII buyers: the reported three micro-adjustment holes provide some sizing flexibility, but the bracelet does not offer tool-less adjustment.

How the flyer GMT works

The Miyota 9075 is a traveler, or “flyer,” GMT movement. Its local 12-hour hand jumps independently, so a wearer can move local time forward or backward when changing time zones without stopping the watch. The 24-hour hand continues to show a second time zone. Hodinkee notes that the movement also supports date correction when the local hour hand jumps across midnight.

A caller GMT works differently: the 24-hour hand is adjusted to show another zone, while the local hour hand does not jump independently. The Hydra’s flyer layout is useful for travel, but it displays two time zones—not three.

What the bezel is for

The Hydra combines its GMT display with a 60-minute dive-style bezel, not a rotating 24-hour GMT bezel. That keeps elapsed-time tracking available alongside the second time zone: align the bezel marker with the minute hand to track a short interval, such as a dive or cooking time. If you mainly want a bezel to read a third time zone, this is not that layout.

How large does it wear?

Fratello and Hodinkee both report a 41mm case diameter, 46mm lug-to-lug length and 14.6mm overall thickness. Fratello points out that the bezel itself is about 38mm across, so the watch’s visual footprint is smaller than the headline 41mm diameter might suggest. Lug-to-lug length and bezel/dial footprint are useful comparisons alongside case diameter when judging fit.

Hodinkee’s James Stacey said the proportions worked on his 7-inch wrist. That is one reviewer’s experience, not a guarantee of fit for other wrists. The same review lists 20mm lugs.

What to know about the Hesalite crystal

Both versions are reported with a domed Hesalite crystal. Its rounded profile contributes to the vintage character, but Hodinkee notes that Hesalite scratches more readily than sapphire. Surface marks can be polished, though that does not mean every mark will come out. The Polywatch and polishing cloth included in Hodinkee’s reviewed package should not be assumed to come with every Hydra.

The dome also changes how the dial looks from an angle: Hodinkee’s reviewer initially found the edge distortion distracting, then came to appreciate it. That is a matter of preference as much as a specification.

What the reviews say about execution

In Hodinkee’s review, the bezel action was light, with 120 clicks, limited wiggle and good alignment on that reviewer’s loaner. The same individual watch measured +8.5 seconds per day over six positions on a timing machine. That is a result for one sample, not a stated accuracy guarantee or model-wide performance figure. Fratello describes the finishing as somewhat rough around the edges while praising the package’s launch-era value.

Price and availability

Hodinkee listed the SIII at US$599 in July 2023, and Fratello reported the same price in December 2023. Those are historical review prices, not current quotes. Lorier’s manual archive lists a Hydra Series III manual, but current Hydra stock, pricing and authorized-retailer availability are not established by the available current product information. Lorier’s inspected product page was for the Hyperion; its price and availability do not apply to the Hydra.
