The Louis Vuitton Tambour Opera Automata turns its time display into a brief mechanical performance: press a pusher and an animated mask changes expression as the jumping hour and retrograde minute indications appear. Introduced in 2023, the watch draws on Bian Lian, the mask-changing art associated with Sichuan Opera. Its appeal lies in joining that theatrical idea to intricate movement engineering and hand-finished dial work.
What is the Tambour Opera Automata?
Louis Vuitton introduced the Tambour Opera Automata in 2023 as a high-watchmaking timepiece built around an animated dial. Rather than treating the automaton as decoration separate from the watch’s function, its animation is integrated with the time display: the performance reveals the jumping hour and retrograde minutes.
Monochrome Watches quoted Michel Navas, identified as a Master Watchmaker at La Fabrique du Temps Louis Vuitton, describing the intention: “We wanted the Tambour Opera Automata to reflect the striking aesthetics and expressive movements of Bian Lian.”
How does the dial animation work?
A pusher starts the sequence. Monochrome Watches reported five animations unfolding over 16 seconds. As the dial changes, the dragon’s head rises to reveal the jumping-hour display, while its tail indicates the retrograde minutes. The mask changes expression as part of the performance.

The imagery includes a mask, a dragon head and tail, and a calabash gourd. This is the watch’s interpretation of Bian Lian; it should not be confused with a literal recreation of the stage technique or with a claim that the watch changes twenty masks. Forbes also described five mask expressions and the jumping-hour/retrograde-minute arrangement.

Bian Lian is the mask-changing art associated with Sichuan Opera. The Tambour Opera Automata translates that idea into a mechanical dial whose mask changes expression. The connection gives the animation a narrative: the watch’s theatrical motion is also how its time display comes into view.

What powers the automaton?
Monochrome Watches’ 2023 launch coverage identifies the hand-wound movement as calibre LV 525, developed and assembled by La Fabrique du Temps Louis Vuitton. Its reported specifications are:
- 426 components and 50 jewels
- 21,600 vibrations per hour, or 3 Hz
- A 100-hour power reserve
- Jumping hours and retrograde minutes
- A power-reserve indicator and on-demand automaton sequence
The sapphire caseback reveals another mask motif and contrasting shot-blasted and mirror-polished finishes. These figures are launch-era published specifications, not results of an independent performance test.

How are the case and dial made?
Monochrome’s detailed 2023 description lists a polished 18k pink-gold case measuring 46.8 mm across and 14.42 mm thick, with 30 metres of water resistance. It has a domed anti-reflective sapphire crystal, sapphire caseback, black alligator strap and 18k pink-gold folding buckle.
The dial combines several decorative crafts. Anita Porchet is credited with the cloisonné enamel mask and dial work. Dick Steenman is credited with engraving the pink-gold dragon and calabash. The fan uses champlevé enamel, and the design also incorporates cabochon-cut rubies.

What was the launch price, and can it still be ordered?
Monochrome reported an approximate launch price of EUR 450,000 excluding taxes in March 2023 and said the watch could be ordered from Louis Vuitton in highly limited numbers. That is historical launch reporting, not a current quote. The available reporting does not establish today’s price, whether orders remain open, the production quantity, regional availability or servicing arrangements.

The available launch coverage does not explain the setting procedure. Because the watch has an on-demand automaton as well as jumping-hour and retrograde-minute indications, a reader should not assume a crown or pusher sequence from those descriptions alone. What makes it a Louis Vuitton high-watchmaking piece?
The Tambour Opera Automata brings together an in-house-developed and assembled hand-wound calibre, an animated complication linked to the time display, and labor-intensive decorative work in enamel and engraving.
