The Breitling Top Time ref. 810 makes its case through a rare balance: a legible three-register chronograph in a restrained, elegant 1960s design. Introduced in 1964, it came in distinct generations, so choosing one means deciding between the softer early Mark 1 and the flatter, more assertive Mark 2—and checking that its details are original.
What is a Breitling Top Time 810?
The ref. 810 is a hand-wound Top Time chronograph Breitling introduced in 1964. The brand positioned it as a more sophisticated three-subdial counterpart to simpler two-register Top Time models. Its three-register layout adds a 12-hour totalizer, which Breitling says is useful for timing longer events. Breitling’s official Top Time history describes the original watch as having smooth lugs and a clean dial with contrasting white subdials.

That combination is the appeal: the dial provides more timing information without making the watch look overly technical or crowded. The case and dial changed during production, however, so “Top Time 810” does not describe one uniform configuration.
What movement is in the Breitling Top Time 810?
Ref. 810 examples are associated with the hand-wound Venus 178 chronograph movement. The collector guide identifies it in the early Mark 1.1, and the 810 series is generally associated with this caliber. A movement should still be checked in the specific watch being considered; a model reference alone does not establish the present movement, its originality, or its service condition.

How can I tell a Mark 1 from a Mark 2?
The most useful distinctions are case construction and shape, lug width, and the available dial and hand variations. The following subtype dates and labels reflect Fratello’s collector taxonomy, not a definitive factory production ledger.

The diameter figures vary by source and may reflect rounding or different measurement conventions; neither source explains the discrepancy. Treat them as source-specific figures rather than a single exact dimension. Breitling’s official history dates the case’s move to a bulkier design to 1967. In hand, the Mark 1 reads as the softer, earlier design, while the Mark 2’s flatter case and altered details give it a more assertive look.

What size strap does a Breitling 810 take?
It depends on the case generation: Fratello gives a 21 mm lug gap for earlier Mark 1 examples and 19 mm for the Mark 2. Do not order a strap on the reference number alone. Measure the individual watch between the lugs first, especially if its generation or case originality is uncertain.
What should you check before buying one?
Vintage examples vary in condition and originality. Fratello flags dial-printing damage, including missing white printing, and incorrect hands as concerns. A sensible inspection starts by establishing which generation is being offered, then comparing its case, dial layout, and hands with that generation’s described features.

- Ask for clear photographs of the dial, case sides and lugs, caseback, and movement.
- Check that the dial and hand configuration is consistent with the stated Mark and variant; attractive appearance alone does not establish originality.
- Have the movement and overall condition assessed by someone experienced with vintage chronographs. Photographs and a reference number cannot establish service status.
Fratello’s 2016 article gives a historical price range, not a current valuation. The available sources do not establish present-day transaction values, so they cannot support a reliable 2026 price estimate or an investment claim.

The ref. 810 is compelling as a specific design from Breitling’s 1960s chronograph history: a three-register watch with a practical 12-hour totalizer, a comparatively restrained dial, and two distinct case generations. The choice is less about one being categorically better than the other and more about which proportions and dial character suit the wearer. Its strongest case is that combination of legibility, elegance, and period-specific detail—not an unsupported promise of bargain pricing or future returns.
