Marathon OSAR-D: How the 2024 Remake Differs From the SAR-D

The Marathon OSAR-D is a 2024 remake of the SAR-D, a watch Marathon says it issued to Canadian search-and-rescue technicians in the early 2000s. The company says the update brings improved MaraGlo illumination, larger indices and a clearer magnified date window. The current family comes in 36, 41 and 46 mm cases, with different movements and fit dimensions by size.

What is the Marathon OSAR-D?

OSAR-D stands for “Original Search and Rescue with Date.” Marathon describes it as a refreshed version of its SAR-D, whose original 41 mm model, the company says, was issued to Canadian SAR technicians in the early 2000s. That history is Marathon’s account; it does not establish that every modern OSAR-D is issued equipment or holds a specific military contract. Marathon’s OSAR-D family page says its SAR watches were developed to Canadian Government requirements for professional SAR operations and that the broader SAR series has been used by Canadian and U.S. military members.

Marathon dates the OSAR-D launch to 2024. The company’s president, Mitchell Wein, described it at launch as a watch that “builds upon the legendary performance of the original SAR-D.” That is the manufacturer’s characterization, not an independent performance finding. The launch announcement gives the company’s account of the release.

What changed from the SAR-D?

Marathon identifies three principal updates: improved MaraGlo illumination, larger indices and improved clarity through the cyclops date magnifier. The family also now spans 36, 41 and 46 mm case options. Since the sizes do not all use the same movement or have the same dimensions, the choice is more than a matter of dial scale.

#1 Best Overall
36mm Original SAR w/Date on 3-Piece Rubber Strap Kit (OSAR-D)
  • Submersibility: 30 ATM
  • Bezel Scale: 60 Minute
  • Bezel Type: Uni-Directional
  • Case Finish: Brushed
  • Case Material: 316L Stainless Steel
  • Illumination: Marathon says the OSAR-D has upgraded MaraGlo illumination. Its broader SAR-series description mentions tritium tubes and MaraGlo, but the OSAR-D listings emphasize MaraGlo; that should not be taken to mean every illuminated marker on every OSAR-D dial is a tritium tube.
  • Dial and date: The company cites larger indices and better clarity in the magnified date window.
  • Size and movement: The 36 and 41 mm listings specify Sellita SW200-1 movements; the 46 mm listing specifies a Sellita SW600 b and a 62-hour power reserve.

These are manufacturer-published changes and specifications. They are not the results of an independent timing, lume, water-resistance or wear test.

How do the 36, 41 and 46 mm versions compare?

Variant Published dimensions and fit Movement and other listed details
36 mm 36 mm case; 13 mm thick; 43.5 mm lug-to-lug; 18 mm lug width Sellita SW200-1, 26 jewels; listed at 30 ATM
41 mm 41 mm case; 20 mm lug width on the bracelet listing Sellita SW200-1; listed at 30 ATM
46 mm 46 mm case; 17 mm thick; 55 mm lug-to-lug; 22 mm lug width Sellita SW600 b, 24 jewels; Marathon states a 62-hour reserve; listed at 30 ATM

The dimensions and movements above are from Marathon’s listings: 36 mm OSAR-D, OSAR-D family page, 41 mm OSAR-D with bracelet and 46 mm OSAR-D. The listed 46 mm lug-to-lug span of 55 mm is the longest published fit dimension in this comparison; for a smaller wrist, the 36 mm version’s 43.5 mm lug-to-lug measurement may be a more useful starting point than case diameter alone. Wrist shape and preference still affect how a watch wears.

Choosing by wrist fit and strap

Case diameter alone does not tell the whole fit story: thickness and lug-to-lug length matter too. The 36 mm listing provides all three dimensions, while the cited 41 mm bracelet listing specifies its 20 mm lug width but not thickness or lug-to-lug length. The 46 mm listing is 17 mm thick and 55 mm lug-to-lug, so it is the largest and thickest of the three variants with complete published dimensions here.

Match a replacement strap to the lug width for the exact size: Marathon lists 18 mm for the 36 mm model and 20 mm for the 41 mm bracelet listing. The 46 mm listing gives a 22 mm lug width. Confirm the product page and strap fit for the specific watch before ordering; listings can vary by configuration.

  • Gear Count: 26
  • Date Display: Magnified Date Window
  • Glow: MaraGlo Illumination
  • Crystal: Sapphire Glass

Movement and power reserve

The 36 and 41 mm versions use the Sellita SW200-1, while the 46 mm uses the Sellita SW600 b. Marathon states a 62-hour reserve for the 46 mm version; the cited listings do not state a comparable reserve figure for the 36 or 41 mm models. Choose between them based on the size and movement distinction rather than assuming the reserve figure applies across the family.

What do the illumination and dive specifications mean?

The 36 mm product listing specifies MaraGlo, a date with 1.5× magnification, sapphire crystal, a screw-down crown, a unidirectional 60-minute bezel, brushed 316L stainless steel and 30 ATM submersibility. Marathon lists 30 ATM for the family variants. These are maker-published specifications, not independently measured results in this article; a water-resistance rating is not a report of a test performed on an individual watch.

Marathon’s family page attributes the statement “WORKS EXTREMELY WELL AS A DIVE WATCH AND AS A TOOL” to Navy Diver Brock Stevens. It is a named wearer’s testimonial, not a substitute for independent testing or a guarantee of performance for every wearer.

Which OSAR-D size should you choose?

  • Consider the 36 mm if you want the smallest listed case and value its published 43.5 mm lug-to-lug length. Its 18 mm lug width also makes the appropriate replacement strap size clear.
  • Consider the 41 mm if you want the middle case option and the SW200-1 movement. Check the exact bracelet or strap configuration for its fit details; the cited bracelet listing gives a 20 mm lug width.
  • Consider the 46 mm if you prefer the largest case, want the SW600 b, or value Marathon’s stated 62-hour reserve. Its 55 mm lug-to-lug measurement and 17 mm thickness are important fit considerations.

Marathon lists standard and Arctic dial options, but selection can vary by size and stock. Prices and availability can also change, so verify the live listing for the exact configuration before buying.
