Time+Tide’s 2023 feature presents it as a contemporary take on the skin diver; Marin itself describes the Standard as a modern dive watch, not an homage to a classic.
What is a skin-diver watch?
Time+Tide frames the skin diver as a dive watch intended to be worn directly on the skin rather than over a wetsuit. In that feature’s account, the style is associated with thinner profiles and 100–150 metres of water resistance, with everyday versatility taking priority over professional-grade dive-watch capabilities. That is the feature’s historical framing, not a formal taxonomy.
Marin Instruments makes a related but distinct point about its design: the brand says, “The Standard Skin-Diver is a modern dive watch. It is not an homage to a classic.” The description positions the Standard as its own design, with early dive-watch cues.
How the Marin Instruments Skin Diver is built
Time+Tide’s May 2023 feature reports the following measurements and specifications. They describe the watch reviewed at that time, not necessarily every current production revision.

| Feature | Reported detail |
|---|---|
| Case | Stainless steel; 39 mm diameter, 48 mm lug-to-lug, 11.5 mm thick |
| Lug width | 20 mm |
| Crystal | Sapphire |
| Bezel | Fully lumed, 60-click; the official Standard page describes it as unidirectional, stainless steel and PVD-coated |
| Water resistance | 200 m, as reported by Time+Tide |
| Movement | Sellita SW200-1 automatic; 28,800 beats per hour (4 Hz); 38-hour power reserve |
The feature describes brushed case surfaces, polished sides, drilled lugs and a flat, slab-sided profile. The dimensions suggest a relatively compact footprint, but fit depends on wrist shape and personal preference; lug-to-lug length is often more useful than diameter when estimating how a watch will sit across the wrist.
The 200-metre rating and screw-down crown and caseback reported by Time+Tide indicate substantial water resistance on paper. They are not a guarantee of safe use in any particular activity. Follow the manufacturer’s current instructions, ensure the crown is secured, and have the watch’s water resistance checked as appropriate before exposure to water.

Standard or Polar: which dial should you choose?
The 2023 feature discusses two dial options: Standard in black and Polar in white. Its description of the layout includes circular hour markers, rectangular markers at 6 and 9, a triangle at 12, and a date window at 3. It also notes substantial lume. The official Standard page specifically describes a black dial with printed lume plots and a fully lumed bezel.
- Standard: the black-dial option, with a darker overall appearance.
- Polar: the white-dial option, offering a lighter dial contrast.
The available material does not establish differences in movement or case specifications between the two variants. Compare them by dial preference and how their contrast works for your intended use; inspect current product details before assuming other specifications are identical.

Movement, timekeeping and straps
Time+Tide identifies the movement as a Sellita SW200-1 automatic running at 4 Hz, or 28,800 beats per hour, with a 38-hour power reserve. The reviewer also reported observing approximately +5 seconds per day while testing both versions. That is one reviewer’s experience, not a controlled laboratory result, a factory accuracy guarantee or a chronometer certification.
The 2023 feature reports two included strap options: a shaped rubber strap and a Maratac Zulu NATO strap. With the reported 20 mm lug width, another 20 mm NATO strap may be an option, but check the specific strap’s width, length, hardware and attachment compatibility before buying.

- DIVER-INSPIRED DESIGN — Inspired by the sea, the MDV-106G is styled after classic dive watches and delivers 200-meter water resistance at an unbeatable price point. The black resin band and stainless steel case give it a classic look, while the anti-reverse rotary bezel adds authentic dive-watch character.
- STAINLESS STEEL CASE WITH SCREW-LOCK CROWN & CASEBACK — The MDV-106G features a stainless steel case and a reliable screw-lock crown for enhanced water resistance protection. Screw-down crown and screw-lock caseback work together to keep the movement sealed and secure during water activities — a construction standard found on dive watches far above this price range.
- LARGE FLUORESCENT HANDS & INDICES FOR INSTANT READABILITY — The dial features hands and hour indices with large fluorescent areas for easy reading in low-light and underwater conditions. The clean 3-hand analog layout with date display at 3 o'clock keeps the dial uncluttered and immediately legible at a glance.
- 44MM STAINLESS STEEL CASE | 22MM LUG WIDTH | MINERAL GLASS — The case measures 44mm in diameter, 12mm in height, with a 49mm lug-to-lug length and a standard 22mm lug width — making strap upgrades effortless with a vast range of aftermarket options. Mineral glass protects the dial from everyday scratches and impacts.
- 3-YEAR BATTERY & 200M WATER RESISTANCE — Powered by an SR626SW battery with an approximate 3-year life, the case measures 49.5 × 46.3 × 12.1mm and weighs 92 grams. At 200 meters of water resistance, the Duro is versatile and suitable for all situations — whether in the water, hiking, running, or at the office.
