Google now describes the broader design direction as Material 3 Expressive: the watch can coordinate system colors with its selected watch face or use a preset palette. Pixel Watch 2 and 3 received Wear OS 6 in October 2025, while Pixel Watch 4 launched with it. The original Pixel Watch did not receive the full upgrade.
What “Material You” means on Pixel Watch
Material You is the name commonly associated with Google’s Android personalization approach and dynamic color. Google’s newer design-system language is Material 3, with Material 3 Expressive describing its more colorful, animated and shape-aware direction for newer Android and Wear OS interfaces.
On Wear OS 6, the practical feature is watch-side color theming: the watch can apply colors coordinated with the selected watch face across supported system surfaces and Google apps, or let you choose a preset palette. Google’s Wear OS announcement describes the design direction; reporting on the interface details explains the watch-face-based color approach.
| Term | Meaning here |
|---|---|
| Material You | The broader Android personalization and dynamic-color idea. |
| Material 3 | Google’s newer design system. |
| Material 3 Expressive | The more colorful, animated and shape-aware direction used in newer Android and Wear OS interfaces. |
| Dynamic color | A way for interface colors to coordinate with a selected color source, such as a watch face. |
Which Pixel Watch models support it?
| Model | Wear OS 6 and Material 3 Expressive status |
|---|---|
| Pixel Watch (first generation) | Did not receive the full Wear OS 6 upgrade; it entered its final-update cycle. |
| Pixel Watch 2 | Received the Wear OS 6 update in October 2025. |
| Pixel Watch 3 | Received the Wear OS 6 update in October 2025. |
| Pixel Watch 4 | Launched with Wear OS 6. |
The Pixel Watch 2 and 3 rollout was reported on October 8, 2025; staged delivery can mean availability differs by device or rollout cohort. What changes in the interface?
Wear OS 6’s refresh is visual and interaction-focused, not a health or performance upgrade. Depending on the system surface and app, users may see:
- Dynamic colors drawn from the selected watch-face theme, plus preset palette choices.
- Rounder buttons and controls, with larger touch targets in places such as Quick Settings.
- Smoother scrolling and transitions.
- Layouts and components designed to sit more naturally on a circular display.
- Updated Google apps and watch experiences where the new design is supported.
These changes are not guaranteed across every third-party app, Tile, complication or watch face. Individual developers need to adopt the relevant Wear OS design components for their apps to reflect the newer system consistently. Google’s Wear OS 6 announcement coverage and hands-on preview describe the design changes and developer-dependent adoption.

How to change the watch face and theme
Edit the watch-face color
- On the watch, touch and hold the current watch face.
- Tap Edit.
- Adjust the face’s available colors and complications.
- Save or apply the face.
Google also documents editing faces on the watch or in the Pixel Watch app in its watch-face customization guide.
Choose a system color theme
Wear OS 6 coverage describes a color-theme control with a Match watch face choice and preset palettes. The exact setting name and menu location can vary by build and model, so treat this as a likely route rather than a universal path:

- The Google Pixel Watch 4 is a stunning display of precision craftsmanship, with Gemini, your built-in AI assistant, Google’s longest-lasting battery, and comprehensive tools for next-level health and fitness performance[1,2,3,4]
- See it all and do the most with the Actua 360 domed display; it’s 10% larger and 50% brighter than Pixel Watch 3, and as durable as ever with scratch-resistant Gorilla Glass[1]
- The Google Pixel Watch 4 has Gemini built in[4]; just ask questions and your ultra capable AI assistant will deliver quick responses for personalized help; and stay connected when you’re texting with AI-powered quick replies that are hyper-relevant[5,6]
- Get up to 30 hours of battery life or up to 48 hours in Battery Saver mode[3]; plus, the new side charging dock gives you 15 hours of battery in 15 minutes or less[7]
- Train smarter with 40+ exercise modes and real-time stats on your wrist[8]; and with high-precision dual-frequency GPS, you get more accurate route tracking on runs and hikes[1]
- Open Settings on the watch.
- Look under Display or the watch-personalization section.
- Open Color theme or the equivalent theme control.
- Choose Match watch face or select a preset palette.
If the setting is not present, first confirm the watch is eligible and running Wear OS 6 or later. A routine security patch or an app update is not the same as a platform upgrade.
Does the watch copy the Pixel phone’s wallpaper colors?
Do not assume so. The documented behavior is that the watch theme can coordinate with the selected watch face. That is related to Material You’s dynamic-color approach, but it is not evidence of a guaranteed, live copy of the phone’s wallpaper-derived palette. If the watch does not match the phone, that can be expected rather than a fault.

What to check if the option is missing or an update has not appeared
- Check the model and software version. The original Pixel Watch did not receive the full Wear OS 6 upgrade; Pixel Watch 2 and 3 did, and Pixel Watch 4 shipped with it.
- Check system updates on the watch. Wear OS updates arrive over the air, and a rollout may not reach all eligible devices at once. Google provides Wear OS OTA update resources.
- Meet update requirements. Keep the watch charged and connected as required by Google’s update process; check available storage and network connectivity if installation stalls.
- Update watch apps. Check the Play Store for pending Google and Pixel Watch app updates, then restart the watch.
- Look for the setting under another label. Depending on the build, it may be called Color theme or appear in display or personalization settings rather than using the phrase “Material You.”
- Allow for partial adoption. The system, Google apps and third-party apps can change at different rates; a face or app that does not use the relevant design support may not reflect the theme.
Is the change worth caring about?
For Pixel Watch 2 and 3 owners, the theming and interface refresh is part of the eligible Wear OS 6 software update. The original Pixel Watch should not be expected to gain it through a normal Wear OS 6 upgrade. For buyers, treat the feature as a personalization benefit: it can make the watch feel more visually unified, while more expressive colors may be less restrained and larger controls can leave less information visible at once.
