Reima Koivukoski is a Finnish independent watchmaker whose work combines formal watchmaking and micromechanics training with experience in case prototyping, restoration and repair. Back in Finland, he has built a practice around making watch components in his workshop, reworking base movements and developing bespoke projects with clients.
Who is Reima Koivukoski?
Koivukoski is a watchmaker based in Espoo, Finland, and the founder of Koivukoski Watches and KronowerK. His official biography describes watch design, manufacturing and prototyping as areas of focus. The Helsinki atelier mentioned on the Koivukoski Watches home page is the workshop location described by the brand; the biography identifies him as based in Espoo.
His route to independent watchmaking included technical training in Finland, a year at Austrian maker Habring², and repair, restoration and team leadership work in Germany. The chronology and personal details below are from his March 2024 interview with Robin Nooy at MONOCHROME Watches, unless otherwise noted.
How did he train as a watchmaker?
Koivukoski says his first introduction to watchmaking came through making and hand-painting miniatures. After completing Finnish military service, he applied to the Finnish School of Watchmaking in Espoo. He was initially selected for micromechanics training, which he says taught him how to make parts; he later completed watchmaking studies as well. His official biography also confirms his attendance at the school.

That combination helped give him a practical foundation for making components, as well as training in the repair and construction of watches. He has described his aim as working “as close to in-house as my resources allow me to do.”
What work shaped his independent practice?
Case making and prototyping at Habring²
After graduating, Koivukoski moved to Austria and worked at Habring² for about a year. He says he learned case making and prototyping there, often working with steel. The experience gave him exposure to turning design ideas into physical watch components.
Repair, restoration and leadership in Germany
He then moved to Cologne, where he worked in watch repair and restoration at Atelier Suché. Later, he led a team of watchmakers at Chronext. Those roles added service and restoration experience to the manufacturing skills he had developed in training and at Habring².
Returning to Finland
Koivukoski says he and his wife decided to make Finland their next home, and he returned around 2020. He had service agreements to cover day-to-day expenses while developing commission work and his independent business. His official biography says he returned to Espoo and started Koivukoski Watches and KronowerK.

What does Koivukoski make in his workshop?
In the 2024 interview, Koivukoski describes making cases, hands, dials and buckles himself. He says he makes steel cases from bar stock, can form gold granulate into a case, makes hands from sheet steel and dials from silver sheets. These are his descriptions of his own workshop practice, not an independently audited measure of how much of each watch is made in-house.
For the movement, he says he starts with a base calibre rather than making one from scratch. He describes completely restoring, modifying and finishing that movement in his workshop. The distinction matters: his account presents a mix of component manufacture and extensive work on a sourced movement, rather than a claim that every component is produced in-house.

How does bespoke work with clients?
Koivukoski says bespoke projects are a significant part of his work. Clients bring ideas, which he can visualize using 3D software and develop into a new project. They may also ask for a change to an existing design, such as a different dial. The process he describes is collaborative: the client’s concept informs the design, while his workshop experience helps translate it into a watch project.
