In the United States, the glasses went on sale September 30, 2025, starting at $799. The finished product is a glanceable display, not a full augmented-reality headset.
What the Meta leak showed
Before Meta Connect 2025, an unlisted video appeared through Meta’s YouTube channel and was later removed or made unavailable. It appeared to show several upcoming Meta and Oakley products, including Ray-Ban-branded glasses with a small display and a wrist-worn control device. The video’s appearance on Meta’s own channel makes accidental early publication or promotional-asset exposure a plausible explanation, but Meta did not confirm the circumstances in the sources available here. TechYahoo’s report on the leak describes what was visible.
The glasses appeared to put information in front of the right eye. The video showed or suggested navigation, Meta AI answers, recipe instructions, translation or captions, and message previews and replies. It also suggested that the wristband could control the interface with small gestures. Those were leak-era demonstrations or inferences, not proof that every depicted feature shipped at launch.
Pre-launch coverage associated the glasses with the rumored name “Hypernova.” That was not the retail name: Meta announced the product as Meta Ray-Ban Display. Tom’s Guide’s Meta Connect coverage captured some of the launch-era expectations; the official specifications and availability are set out in Meta’s announcement and the Ray-Ban US product page.

What launched: Meta Ray-Ban Display and Meta Neural Band
Meta announced the glasses and band on September 17, 2025, and began US sales on September 30 at a starting price of $799, with the Neural Band included. The initial rollout was limited to selected US retailers, including Best Buy, LensCrafters, Sunglass Hut, and Ray-Ban Stores; Meta said select Verizon stores would follow. Its announcement described expansion to Canada, France, Italy, and the United Kingdom as planned for early 2026. Availability and configurations can vary by location, so check the local product listing before buying.
The final product is best described as display AI glasses. A screen built into one lens can provide a compact, heads-up-display-like view, but it does not create a broad, persistent overlay across the wearer’s surroundings. Meta presents this category separately from full augmented-reality glasses such as its Orion prototype.
How the Neural Band works
Meta calls the companion device the Meta Neural Band. It uses electromyography (EMG) sensors to read electrical signals associated with muscle activity around the wrist and hand, then translates recognized movements into commands for the glasses. The leak’s term “sEMG” means surface electromyography: sensing muscle signals at or near the skin rather than inserting sensors into tissue. This is not a brain-computer interface in the ordinary meaning of that phrase; it reads muscle activity, not thoughts.

Controls include sliding a thumb across a finger to move through items, pinching to select, and pinching while rotating the wrist to adjust controls such as volume or camera zoom. The band is the product’s distinctive control method, but Meta’s product materials also list touch and voice controls, so it is not presented as the only way to interact. Meta says its wrist-EMG research involved nearly 200,000 participants and that the band was designed to work across differences in users’ muscle signals; those are Meta’s claims, not an independent validation of performance for every wearer.
Meta has also described potential benefits for people who have difficulty making large movements, including some people with tremors, spinal-cord injuries, or fewer than five fingers. That is a possible accessibility use, not evidence here of clinically validated outcomes or a guarantee that the band will suit a particular person.

There is a notable discrepancy in the charging-case estimate: Meta’s launch announcement says up to 30 hours total, while the current Ray-Ban product page lists up to 24 hours. The available sources do not explain whether this reflects changed testing assumptions, a revision, or another distinction. Treat the current regional product listing as the figure to check when considering a purchase.
What the display is useful for—and what it is not
The design favors brief glances rather than extended screen use. Its compact, single-eye display can suit directions, captions or translations, message previews, photo previews, music information, and visual answers from Meta AI. The narrow field of view limits how much can be shown at once, while the display’s position and intermittent use are intended to avoid the feel of a continuously active overlay.
Recommended Free Tools
- Good fit: checking a turn, seeing a short message, or glancing at an AI response without taking out a phone.
- Less suitable: long-form reading, watching video, persistent navigation overlays, spatial-computing applications, or replacing a phone.
Do not treat every typing or gesture sequence in the leaked material as a launch feature. Meta described neural handwriting—writing messages with subtle finger movements—as a future capability in its launch announcement. A promotional leak can show planned or staged functionality, so the shipping product materials are the better guide to what is available.

Trade-offs to weigh before buying
The wristband adds a second wearable
The Neural Band needs to be worn, fitted, and charged alongside the glasses. Gesture recognition may take practice, and the band can be easy to forget or lose. Someone who prefers voice or frame-mounted touch controls may not value its signature input enough to accept another device. Conversely, subtle finger movements may be appealing to people who want to interact without raising a phone.
Battery life and weight are real compromises
The glasses’ rated battery life is up to six hours per charge, and the band is rated for up to 18 hours. The glasses combine a camera, speakers, microphones, wireless connections, AI functions, and a color display, so actual runtime will depend on use. Charging-case support helps, but the 24-hour and 30-hour total estimates differ between the current Ray-Ban page and Meta’s launch announcement.
At 68 g in standard size and 70 g in large, the glasses are heavier than ordinary eyewear. Buyers should consider fit, nose and temple pressure, and whether the thicker frame suits their day-to-day wear. The supplied specifications do not establish long-term comfort for individual users; trying the fit and display in person is more informative than relying on weight alone.
Best Value
- Get the most out of the moment with iconic Ray-Ban style and technology by Meta. Now featuring frames for a broader range of face shapes.
- Never miss a beat—ask Meta AI to take photos or videos, unearth information, create clever image captions or check out FAQ’s.
- Video call hands-free and share your POV so others can feel like they’re right there with you whether you’re cooking, watching a game or sharing core memories.
- Capture your world with an updated camera and built-in edit features. Take high-quality photos and videos hands free or livestream your point of view.
- Discreet open-ear speakers let you enjoy rich audio quality, music and calls without losing the ambient sounds of your surroundings.
Privacy and social context still matter
The camera raises the familiar concern that smart glasses can record people who may not realize it. A wearer should understand the recording indicators and applicable local rules; legal requirements differ by jurisdiction. Captions and translation can also prompt questions about how conversations are captured or processed, which should be checked in the product’s current privacy information. The display is intended for the wearer, but that does not establish perfect visual privacy, and discreet wrist gestures may be less apparent to bystanders than using a phone.
Price and alternatives
At $799 starting in the US, the Display model makes most sense for someone who specifically wants its visual interface and is comfortable with the Neural Band, added weight, and charging routine. For a lower-cost route to camera, audio, calls, and AI without the display or band, Meta’s 2026 comparison page lists Ray-Ban Meta starting at $379. Oakley Meta models are a sport-oriented alternative for buyers prioritizing active-use frames and camera/audio features over an in-lens display. Those products are not substitutes for the Display’s screen or Neural Band controls. Meta’s comparison of its AI glasses describes the categories.
Is Meta Ray-Ban Display really AR?
“Heads-up display” is useful shorthand for the small amount of information shown in the lens. “Full AR glasses” would overstate the experience. The display is monocular, has a 20-degree field of view, and is designed for glanceable interactions—not a binocular, full-scene layer of virtual objects. Meta positions Orion as a separate AR category, so buyers seeking a consumer version of that prototype should not mistake the Display glasses for it.
Quick Recap
Who should consider the glasses?
- Consider them if you are an early adopter who wants glanceable directions, messages, captions, or visual AI, and you are willing to wear and charge a wristband.
- Try them in person first if frame comfort, display placement, or band fit is a deciding factor. Meta promoted in-person demos and fitting at selected locations; availability is location-specific. Ray-Ban’s Los Angeles store page is one example of a demo listing.
- Look elsewhere if you want full AR, all-day use without charging, conventional lightweight eyewear, or smart glasses without an additional wearable.
- Check local availability if you are outside the United States. The cited launch announcement described international expansion as a plan for early 2026, not a guarantee of current stock in every market.
